I've been getting a lot of encouragment on the hobby aspect. Two members of our group have basically the whole Nomad faction each fully painted to a very nice level, one of those has some super, super nice Anconticimento in camo and another has some almost Giraldez level PanO, so any time I play them and use unpainted stuff I get the ribbing I deserve.

I've been getting more into the hacking side. I've got a Tuareg Hacker, Leila, Barid and Govad Hacker and I'm painting my EVO remote soon so I can really play in the hacking game.

Also, anyone else catch the Fat Yuan Yuan LE release? Arms are interghangeable - the torso is the same for each, just different arms, head and backpack - so you can have the flying one eating, or buy two boxes and have neither eating. For something that started as a joke, I really like that they carried it through. There's going to be a bundle with Outrage, Knauf and these for 50 euros, probably at adepticon. Otherwise they're 30 eruos for the two, sounding like an Adepticon only weekend release.

I find painting hard to get stuck into and really do, but I actually like the results for my Nomads for once, so I've been trying to put more work into them

Easiest way to paint (in my opinion) is something called 'block painting'. Spray prime all your minis; white if you're going to paint any amount of white, grey or black for everything else. Get all your miniatures that are going to share colors together, and mix all your paint at once (if you're mixing paint, less important if you're painting from the pot).

Map out (or 'block') each section of the model; armor is orange, clothing white, hair purple, capes red, lights blue, accessories brown. This is easier with lower quality models where you can get away with two colors plus accessories, but still speeds things along for Infinity.

Apply paint to minis. Don't worry about shading or anything, just get the colors on and touch up mistakes. I normally do mine in an assembly line fashion, one color at a time.

Once the paint is dry, hit it with black ink. Everyone has a different approach here, I used highly thinned black paint and a hair dryer. Seal it, and you're done.

My problem with Infinity models is that I get burned out just painting one of them. That's why some models sit half finished in my backlog for years at times. I just get sick of painting that models, and move on to others. The other problem is, even though I paint my Infinity models in the same colours, I just can't assembly line paint. It's one of the reasons I stopped playing 40k. I'll put 10 models in a row, prime them all, block in one or two colours across them, then not look at them for 6 months. Then on top of that, while I really like the end result of how I paint my stuff, and I like the look of them all on the table painted, it's not until the final edge highlighting that I like it. Before that, I just think 'ugh, why do I bother' then the final highlight is on and I think 'yeah, that's why'.

So basically the inability to assembly line and the tendency to lose interest in models that are taking too long means my painting pace is absolutely glacial, but the fact that regularly models will sit at the half or three quarters stage means when I get a burst of enthusiasm (like I have now) a bunch will get finished quickly as I dig through the backlog and finish parts off. Like my Kameel TR Remote. I was super keen on using this at a tournament almost 2 years ago. I was also very committed to only using painted stuff. It was the one model I did n't get finished in time. So it sat in my backlog looking like this ever since.
    863335_sm-.JPG

That's the half way point for my stuff. Base colours blocked. Washed Strong Tone Ink. Base colours relayered. But since it wasn't going to get done for the tournament, I put it aside. Then every time I looked at it, ugh. I didn't like it. This weekend I had a huge burst of enthusiasm. About 3 hours later, I had this.
    863321_sm-.JPG

So I can really understand not wanting to paint stuff. It happens to me all the time. I'm getting encouragment lately because our group recently expanded, there's a lot of new blood, there's super keen, and they're painting their stuff to some pretty good quality. That alone, even without the ribbing I get for unpainted stuff, gets me enthusiastic. Nothing like playing games regularly to get you interested in painting.

I totally understand where you're coming from, @-Loki-. My problem is that I've got shaky hands and I miss a lot of details, I can end up missing a lot of stuff (belts, lights, shoes) if I don't go over a model three or four times. Things like shading and highlights are beyond me, despite years of trying.

My saving grace is that I've got pretty low standards; prime, three colors, ink and matte ends up looking pretty good to me. A lot better than silver.

    Unrelated question:

I've just noticed that the Szalamandra Pilot has a Killer Hacking Device. Is that an error, or have I just never noticed that before? Can she use that while inside her TAG, or only if she ejects?

I was also looking at the Reverend Custodians (my fave model+profile). It says it can take a Haris of them in the vanilla Nomad list? I'm familiar with Duos and EVO HDDs, but how do I Haris?

Yes, it's correct that the Szalamandra pilot has a Killer Hacking Device and a Contender. CB have been thinking of ways to make TAGs a more competitive choice, since they're often left behind. Even with the cost reductions that most got in N3, they don't see a lot of play because they're a very high risk option. They're still a lot of points and they couldn't do objectives in what is increasingly a game about completing objectives.

So with the 2017 ITS season, they made it a narrative season called TAGLine. The narrative is that someone has figured out how to kill remote pilots miles away via hacking their TAGs. They used this as a way to emphasise TAGs, and added separate profiles for each TAG pilot. Every pilot is a Specialist. Some are just 'Specialist Operative', while some became specific Specialists, and all got an actual weapon. The Maghariba Guard pilot got a Light Shotgun and became a Paramedic. Remote TAGs (most of the Combined Army and all of the PanO TAGs) for little 'remote pilot' robots that detach from the TAG.

They can't use these skills from inside the TAG. The idea of this is to increase the gameplay with TAGs. You've now got an actual reason to mount and dismount. A TAG can relatively safely make its way to an objective, the pilot dismounts and pushes the button, then remounts into safety. In the Szalamandras case, it can dismount and hack something (probably using one of the many repeaters Nomads can put down), the Maghariba Guard can dismount and heal someone in an emergency (she's not a full Doctor, so not a great option). Some got pretty good weapons. The Gecko pilot got a 2 Assault Pistols, which should win a face to face roll.

Note that Operators are not Pilots. The Iguana and Anaconda Operators did not receive Specialist profile,s because they're already badass on their own when they're automatically ejected from their TAG,

You can take the Haris profile but you can't use the Haris rule outside of a sectorial - page 21 of Human Sphere under Fireteam: Haris. "Only those units specified on their Sectorial Army List can compose a Fireteam: Haris."

The army builder just shows you all of the available profiles. For generic armies that means every profile. Nothing prohibits you from taking the Haris profile in a generic list, you just can't use it to form a Haris link. It's been this way since Paradiso when they added Haris to Qapu Khalki.

So, with Warmachine starting to get old, my group has gone back to Infinity. None of us have played a lot, so we'll all be starting at...150 points?

Would it be a good idea to just add another sakiel to the starter set?

That would make a pretty good 150pt list. I'd run something like:

    Triad 1
    Kamael FO
    Kamael Paramedic
    Sakiel Spitfire

    Triad 2
    Kamael FO
    Sakiel FO LT
    Ectros Viral Combi Rifle

    Clipsos FO

Gives you two triads for great order efficiency, a TO Camo FO for pushing buttons or if you get the FO Classified. You've got 3 other FO's and a Paramedic for other objectives. You've got an Ectros with a Viral Combi Rifle and a Sakiel with Spitfire, both of which have decent ARM and a second wound thanks for Symbiont Armour which makes them really potent at 150pts.

I'm not sure if I'd recommend 150 points or not.

150 points can sort of end up like Mangled Metal in Warmachine, in that it creates an environment that could give a false impression about how the game actually plays.

In particular, face to face rolls lead to Infinity to often being accused of being swingy or all luck. I personally don't really think that is true, so much as it being pucker shock over the other player getting to hurt you at a point of play where they traditionally have to just lay there and take it in a game like Warmachine. However, good luck convincing some folks of that when you are playing with a low model count that actually is making the game react strongly to an unlikely roll.

I'd say try to play at a point level that gets both players playing somewhere close to 10 orders per side. If that works out to 150 points then great, it you need to add some more points then consider it. If you do end up at low order counts, then I'd suggest at least taking time to strongly caution people that it will be a bit swing-y and odd, like mangled metal vs real Warmachine.

Also: as soon as you can you should do missions and do missions like they do them in ITS or one of the other mission formats. Same false impression factor. Specifically, the missions are known prior to list construction so they have fair warning that they might need to be prepared to handle things like potentially chasing down a motorcycle that runs off with the objective, or get their entire army out of their deployment zone. The game ending after 3 turns on points or the game being open ended thing where you just kill each other really changes things a lot.

As for adding stuff, honestly, nothing is actually bad. Seriously. Just buy cool looking stuff and play games and you'll soon see that every model has a mission where it fits an army list that can do the mission.

  • -Loki--Loki- Don't pee in my mouth and tell me it's raining. Registered User regular
It depends what you're doing. If they're doing a Slow Grow to get back into it, the ITS slow grow is 150pts/200pts/250pts/300pts.

150pts is a pretty good place to start simply because it lets everyone grab a starter and a blister or two that they think looks fun and make a list out of it. Then the 50pt increments let them buy a box or a couple of blisters each time you go up a notch to vary up what they bring. The 150pt/200pt games also do not allow Advanced rules, so complexities like hacking are gone for a while.

Thanks for reminding me, I'm bringing the Recon format up with my group now. I saw it a while ago and forgot about it. One of the problems with Infinity is even using a small amount of models, games can take a long time to play, sometimes 3 hours if there's a lot of models or someone is using stuff they're not familiar with.

I can't imagine a Recon game taking much longer than an hour. The much smaller table means the action starts quicker. The smaller model count means less models overall, and less models with complicated rules.

  • ChrysisChrysis Registered User regular
The bat-rep videos I've watched from the guy who made it are roughly half the length of his non-recon ones for what it's worth. They're fairly heavily edited though so who knows.

My main reason is that generally there's only one Infinity table at the store, so when there's more than 2 people who turn up to play the first two get a game and the others wait for 2-3 hours or until another viable table frees up.

Playing on a 2x3, with smaller overall games with less complicated rules, you can get two games onto the normal 4x4 table, everyone just needs to be mindful of where the divide is, and people will cycle in and out of games more quickly and even if there's more than 4 people, the extra people still won't wait as long to have a game. Also we have a few Icestorm and Red Veil sets kicking around (I think my brother has 3 Red Veil sets), so we cold grab, say, one of the X-Wing tables which is just a generic black/starry 6x4 flat table and throw a few sets on there.

Yeah, it does seem a bit limiting on Tohaa. But on a 2x3 board 2 Triads would give a ludicrous amount of order efficiency.

I think at 150pts a single triad still gives Tohaa that flavour. They can still mix and match units in that Triad which no one else can do. Plus some of their other models that can go in a Triad are pretty potent outside of one, like the Ectros and Sakiel.

Quite a few sectorials are limited in the same way with the amount of Haris fireteams that are possible now. Every sectorial has ways to field multiple links through Core/Haris/Duo.

the other question I have concerns their symbiont armor. Do you add the total number of wounds, giving the ectros 3, or does he have two different profiles, one with 2 wounds and another with 1? Could make list building harder if it's the first

I wouldn't. It's a uniquely Tohaa thing but there's significant drawbacks to offset the extra wound. After taking a hit, their ARM drops significantly, generally to 0, they lose Ph which makes them less reliable at dodging and throwing grenades, and if they eat a Fire attack and fail the save they instantly die. Basically if they eat a non-Fire hit, chances are the next will finish them. If they eat a Fire hit, bye bye. That's very significant at low points if you're bringing, say, an Ectros and someone has a 12pt Naffatun.

I think Symbiont would be fine.

The best part of Steel Phalanx, and I say this as an Aleph player who finds them super boring, is that with their year of interminable character releases; including characters they had to make up and add to the rules in order to release, they never got a fucking Thorakitai box. That is a core element of the faction with seven distinct profiles, and they have three models from a starter set.
