I can't stop thinking about this movie and I don't think we have discussed everything about it that there is discuss. Like, for instance, its new record as the fastest movie ever to $1 billion worldwide and that it is now the 4th highest grossing movie with 2nd place all but guaranteed.. and that it is still hanging in there on the IMDB top 25, and people are still going to see it in droves.

Some other things:
Avatar guidebook - talks about Pandora, the na'vi, the flora and fauna. Has a dictionary of na'vi words in it for those of you who want na'vi to be the new Klingon. Grammatical rules on on their own wikipedia page (Na'vi language)
http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Confidential-Biological-History-Camerons/dp/0061896756/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262564122&sr=8-5

Avatar art book - all concept art with only a few exceptions, which is too bad. I would have preferred a coffee table book full of nothing but still captures from the movie..
http://www.amazon.com/Art-Avatar-James-Camerons-Adventure/dp/0810982862/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1262564122&sr=8-1

Official Avatar wiki - oddly enough, contains almost everything from the guidebook.

    250 million

and one of the reasons it was that high was because they could re-use the technology for the sequels, so even if this didn't make much money the sequels would make the overall venture successful

I loved it, one of the best things I've ever seen in theater. The 3D effects were amazing, and while the story wasn't overly deep, not every movie needs plot spaghetti to be enjoyable.

I saw it for the second time yesterday. The second time around the 3D was more of a novelty than "OMG this is awesome!" like the first time.

Despite all the criticisms in the last thread, I still enjoyed every aspect, including the story and stereotypical characters. Except the stupid war on terror-inspired lines. Those are still the worst.

It was ridiculously entertaining. Fastest 2hrs and 45min I've ever spent in the theatre. I just wanted more when it was overD:

I am assuming this is a joke. But in the off chance even half of it is serious, this is the one movie you should not wait for DVD, to say nothing of VHS or, god forbid, Betamax.

I saw this again yesterday, kind of surprised the last thread didn't ruin it for me. I loved it just as much. I'm so glad to see it doing so well. The local IMAX has sold out of every single showing so far. That's every day of the week, since it opened, every show has been sold out.

I didn't read the last thread, but I saw this on opening day. I didn't really want to, but my brother and I were both, "Meh, we don't have anything better to do."

I thought technically, it was pretty. But T2, Aliens and Titanic were all far better than this movie. It wasn't bad, persay. But it wasn't great.
Over at Chud, someone likened it to Dances with Wolves, except he joins the indians to slaughter the army.

I worked with 3D imagery ten years ago, so maybe I'm a little jaded. The technology just isn't that new to me.

Also, I'm not going to sit through another 3D movie if they don't make those glasses more comfortable. I mean what the hell? My head felt like it was in a vice! (I was going to make a Casino or Golden Eye reference here, but I couldn't figure out how to make it funny.)

Actual budget is closer to 300 mil, not the reported 250. That's also not counting marketing.

Nonetheless, This weekend I think is being shortsold on the estimate. It's highest grossing Friday was THIS LAST Friday. It's 3rd Friday. Saturday barely dropped as well, and the previous weekday screenings (Mon-Thurs) were all significantly higher than its opening week. Word of Mouth is phenomenal, the 3D is providing the event atmosphere you need for repeat screenings due to the inability to replicate at home what you're getting at the theater.

Even with the lowball (I believe) estimate, this is only a 10 percent drop in it's 3rd weekend, following a 3 percent drop in it's second.

Guarantee it gets to Dark Knight. I still believe it beats Titanic. I dunno if it will get to 700 million, but we still haven't even seen your typical blockbuster formula apply to Avatar yet, so this is essentially a 350 million dollar headstart it gets before the typical decreases even BEGIN to kick in. Can it make another 250 mil before March when Alice in Wonderland starts shoving it off 3D screens?

I don't think that's out of the question in the slightest.

*none of this bla-bla has anything to do with the quality of Avatar as a film. This sort of horse-race trainspotting is done solely for the sake of trainspotting, and is completely divorced from the discussion of the film's content itself.

I still haven't seen it a 2nd time, myself. I'm realizing that I'm like my goofy uncle who was alive when Star Wars first came out, but only saw it once in the theater. There's some 11 year old out there right now who thinks I'm insane for not LIVING in that theater until the movie leaves, just like I couldn't comprehend how that goofy uncle could only see Star Wars ONCE on the big screen and call it good.

I agree, personally. They might have been able to trim the end down a bit and add more time the middle section.. I fucking loved the entire movie start to finish, but the bit starting with
Jake getting lost in the woods, and ending with him, Grace and Norm in a jail cell after Home Tree gets cut down
    was my favorite part.

People aren't annoyed by being reminded that we can be "better"

I'm annoyed that natives are re-written along western narratives to being nature-protecting instead of nature-using. Hell, a native group started storing nuclear waste on their reserve as a giant FUCK YOU to the white environmentalists who kept using natives as this example of how we 'should' interact with nature.

What rises this above a tech demo is the world of Pandora, I think. They put a lot of effort into making it feel like a real place, and I'll gladly come back to it if they can find a better story. The digital acting was pretty good, too.

That isn't saying much. People still love watching submissive women find True Love (tm) with a perfect man who ends up doing everything for her to the point where she almost stops being a character. Besides, the problem with the noble savage isn't about reminding people how much better we could all be, it is the making of a mythical people who are better because they are "closer to nature" and have no real flaws except that they are so gosh darn noble. There are much better ways to remind people how much better we can be than creating fictional Mary Sues.

Well, when Titanic came out, I was in Saudi Arabia, doing the Air Force thing and totally oblivious to all the hype it had generated. When I finally saw it, it was on its final run, and I think I saw Good Will Hunting right afterwards. I haven't seen it since, only because I imagine it doesn't have the same impact on the small screen. But I did really, really enjoy that movie.

And when I say 3D imagery, I mean static 3D images. My point is that the newness of 3D had been worn away awhile back.

Also, there was a Jaws 3D. I remember we only had one pair of the cardboard glasses so we had to pass them around, but I also remember not noticing anything particularly 3D about it. Good times.
