Yeah that strikes me as a pretty shady tactic. Nothing should show up in your mailbox until you accept the offer in my opinion.

I guess it's to reduce the hassle with the people who get hacked and who are stupid enough not to afford Northrend flying, who I'd imagine make up a large part of the crowd who get hacked.
It also has to do with the massive exploitation of the rollback system. Up until yesterday, you could either call account management and go through restoration of everything, or call billing. For whatever reason, billing was authorized to just blanket rollback your account. This was being used by people to mail gold to friends, getting a roll back, then starting all over again.
Man I wish there was a cheap way I could buy and send these authenticators to our forumers overseas. Maybe there is a way to buy them wholesale :P
There is but I am not buying 20,000

A hacker for some reason transferred leadership of a guild to me and then deleted the character after using it to liquidate large amounts of saronite ore. I reported it, and today they sent me the 10G that the hacker removed from the guild bank, which doesn't really seem like an appropriate response. The hacked character is still deleted.
The only guild bank activity before the hack was 2 years ago, so maybe they hacked an account that has been inactive for a long time. That seems odd because wouldn't the hacker have to pay the $15 in that case?
Me and a friend are trying to play the trial of WoW together. I've gotten it installed and everything but he's having trouble with the installer stopping at 3% and not going anywhere. I figured, after looking at the WoW site, that it might have something to do with port forwarding and his firewall, but I wanted to see if anybody else had any idea before I started messing with ports.
Besides that, talking this guy through port forwarding on his router over the phone will be a complete nightmare.

You could try having him download the full client, instead of the TryWoW streaming client thing, and see if that helps. Just make sure he knows to click on the full client download once he logs in to the following webpage, rather than the trial download (the full client works just fine with the trial, or so the FAQ claims).

Many dumbphones can run small Java apps (like games and other stuff). I guess that's it, but I don't know. The information on the website isn't that great, either.
Oh well. I just ordered a physical one yesterday. It will be less clunky and this phone probably doesn't have a whole lot of time left before I replace it.

So the Cat FnF alpha hasn't started yet?
Earlier this afternoon, we received a tip stating the following:
* The Cataclysm alpha will be starting Tuesday, January 12th.
* The alpha will not be distributed digitally, but burned to disc.
This information has recently appeared on the Twitter account wowleak, along with the above image of what appears to be a Cataclysm DVD. We reached out to our sources on the topic, and while they were not able to confirm whether or not the DVD seen above is the real deal, they were able to confirm the alpha phase's tentative starting date. Barring any unexpected hurdles appearing in the next few days, the Friends and Family Alpha Phase will begin on the 12th of January.
I thought it had already begun. Hm. I suppose that still doesn't make a June launch out of the question.
I wasn't aware that it had started (or not), but considering the F&F alphas are pretty much always under NDA, we're only gonna know about it if someone leaks it anyway.
I'm not gonna worry about it until it hits beta.
End on
I wish that someway, somehow, that I could save every one of us
I have zero sympathy for people who lose their shit this way.
What are you using for your group unit frames there?
I use like nothing for mods, just utility stuff like DBM, Recount, Omen and Mik's SBT, so I don't recognize it, but the more I look at it I really like the frames for group there.

X-Perl Unitframes. I've used them forever, they do everything I need so I've never switched. Pretty customizable.
One of the ways they really get people is they track anyone who vists a gold/char selling site and send them e-mails accusing them of selling their char and that they need their password/SQ to 'verify' that it was not them. It works because people know they are guilty.

Why would you put your actual city in there if your address is just "breached the aion game service"? Wonder if the Chinese postal system delivers there.

A person should be able to purchase and play an MMO with a reasonable expectation of account security, barring downloading lots of questionable files.
why?
This is an online game, worth billions?. By that reasoning, a person should also expect to be able to buy a new computer, set it up, and not have to pay/download spyware or anti virus software or fire walls because well.. the internet should be nice to me right?
You don't have to go online and look at questionable things to get viruses or spyware on your computer. Sometimes perfectly innocent sites can infect your PC.
Isn't that a bit redundant of a comparison, though? After all, if a person without an authenticator gets the new computer, sets up it, gets spyware and anti-virus software and sets up a firewall, keeps their definitions up to date, and scans on a regular basis, then it seems to me that they would still have cause to bitch should their WoW account become compromised.
The idea that a person who does take general computer security precautions (yet lacks an authenticator) is themselves at fault for being compromised (which seems to be the underlining implication of the 'don't bitch if you don't have it' statements) is a bit of a stretch.
Of course, I'd assume that most of the time, those getting their accounts hacked aren't taking general security precautions. But if that's the case, then lacking an authenticator is not the most prominent issue for those people.
You're missing the point. There is only two parties that can be at fault if you get hacked. (I suppose a nameless third party who does the actual hacking but you can't attack them because you don't know who they are).
Blizzard can have their own servers end up hacked...Now I'm pretty sure Blizzard is unlikely to have their servers be hacked, and if they were, it'd happen once, a huge amount of accounts would be lost, then it'd be fixed. Not this steady stream.
So its pretty certain that its not Blizzard's fault. the only other possible person to blame is you. Maybe its not through stupidity or neglect, maybe you just visited MMO Champion and they had an infected script running on their site.
There is NOTHING Blizzard can do about that. Absolutely nothing. Except offering an authenticator at a relatively cheap price (excluding shippiing of course, fuck australia), in order to help keep your account safe. They are not required to give that for free. Sure, it might be good PR to do so, but free authenticators for everyone would create more trouble than it was worth. Not only would there be the up front cost of supplying authenticators to everyone playing WoW, but also the huge hassle of all the dumb fucks who are like "no i dnt need to use authinkeator omfg blizz dont make it so we hav 2 use dem".
The best approach I can think of, if they do make authenticators mandatory, is to increase the cost of the Cataclysm box set by $6.50 when it goes on sale and include one in the box. Then, to log on to a Cataclysm account, you must have an authenticator attached to it.

Or, you know, add it to the box and not charge extra.

That would be the same as supplying free authenticators to everyone, which would be a staggering cost for very little return.
The authenticators cost basically nothing on a per-person ratio. The only prohibitive cost is the shipping if you live outside the US. Thus, supplying them in the box is a tiny extra cost without shipping.
Plus, you wouldn't even know whether they increased the cost to cover the authenticator. Its not like they'd be offering a with/without option, the price would just be the price and its there to be paid.

Perhaps. But I'm guessing that their profit margins are in the subs, not in the box copies sold.

It doesn't matter whether the profit margin comes from the boxes or not, giving you authenticator in the box for 6.50 extra compared to nothing is still a loss of income.

Crawl out of your cave and get it on your phone.
It's not only for the Iphone, they also have it for others. Dumbphones included.

How does it work on dumbphones.
Also: dumbphones? Really? Is that now the official designation?
It has still not arrived.
I sent an e-mail on Friday complaining about it.
Edit: I do in fact live in the States.

No, but seriously, the iTouch just keeps paying for itself via shit like this.
If a horse stepped on your iTouch you'd have the same problem.
