i don't know that they're necessarily tools. but they're either not planning on a 'professional' career, or haven't thought things through.

I have a friend who was punky/skin and had large gauges in her ears. she is now an NYC fashionista who is forced to go to great lengths to hide the ridiculous holes in her ears.

It would depend on the industry. I've met plenty of IT people with body mods in white collar jobs. In other industries like mine, it would be career suicide.

that is the image people associate you with if you have stretched ears alot of the time

    no getting around that

also, there is no way you can look like a professional with them.

    it's like this:

if you want to work in a record store or become an artist or a programmer in some young development house or some other field that's either run mostly by young people or values you being "hip" or just don't give a fuck.

    then it doesn't really matter

space your ears, tattoo your face, put piercings through your cheeks, whatever

but if you want to become a paralegal or a claims adjuster or work in an office supplies store

looking like you just stepped out of a hardcore concert does not go in your favor.

when i worked at Zehrs (department/grocery store) i had to do job interviews and sometimes we'd get kids like this with blue hair or giant spacers or a million piercings or a tribal tattoo on their chin and it's like

listen, old ladies and housewives shop here

stodgy folk who don't consider your "urban culture" to be a positive asset

and you might throw up your hands and say "WELL THEY CAN DEAL WITH IT!" or try to draw a comparison to racism or something

but the fact is, we want their money and we want them to shop here, and if they think the store is staffed by scary punk-asses they'll go somewhere else.

spacers and facial tattoos in particular bother me because unlike hair dye or most other piercings, they are fairly permanent and you can't "normal up" to go to work

nope, you gotta be lookin' like that all the time

elements of your appearance you choose to possess also carry with them the reality that you have to deal with how people react to it, fair or not. whether or not you care about is your decision, but i think it's fair of a business to say "your choice of fashion is incompatible with how our business operates" and that isn't comparable to say, religious attire.

Um, regarding an earlier topic, even in the United States where fast food is apparently cheaper it's still not cheaper than buying from the grocery store. The only monetary advantage fast food holds is that you can buy it in smaller portions on a day-to-day schedule rather than buying a lot of food at once which lasts a week or two. This is advantageous if you don't have a lot of money at any one time but it's still more expensive in the long run.

When I go to Wendy's I spend something like 14 dollars so that two people become full. When I go to the grocery store I spend around 10-12 dollars and the meal that's bought is enough for three people. The remaining hamburger buns that are factored in can also be used again for another meal. I also spend around 15-16 dollars a week on bread and sandwich meat and cheese which gives my three-person family something like three sandwiches a day for five days. They're not quite as big as a Subway sandwich but they're filling, there's more of them, and they use better ingredients. Most importantly they're still cheaper.

Fast food is only useful if you can't afford to buy a whole week's worth of groceries at one time, you're lazy, and you just don't care what you put into your body.

And yes, I just went down into my fridge and added up the cost of all of these things. The numbers are not perfect but they're very close.

Privateer Press is a small time company that makes model miniatures. I like some of the stuff they put out but that doesn't change the fact that they are a small independent business basically.

Anecdotally most of the people I've known with stretched ears have been utter toolbags. There are of course exceptions to this. I mean, most of the people I've known named Jason have been total toolbags as well. This doesn't mean that I automatically avoid anyone named Jason, of course.

generally speaking i am against permanent alterations to a person's appearance that can't be concealed in a professional context

if you can take out that nose piercing (or put in a tasteful and tiny stud, at least) or not have your hair dyed bright pink during the work week, great, do whatever you want on your time

if you are tattooing your face or spacing your ears, you can't just turn that off so it's going to have a pretty serious impact on your professional options and how people react to you in general.

Jesus fuck. Captain OCD just uploaded some photos of his niece on facebook. She is an ugly little girl. And they've dressed her up in a ghastly neon pink dress that I suspect is mostly plastic. It may well be child abuse to make a kid wear that.

I kind of feel bad saying that she ain't pretty, but sometimes you just see a child and rather than the "awww, cute kid" you just get a visceral "MONSTER! KILL IT WITH FIRE" reaction.

My own children will have to be at least as beautiful as myself, or I'll recycle them.

Not that I am disagreeing, but citing 14 dollars as the price for a fast food meal for two is somewhat disingenuous. Smart use of dollar/value menus results in a MUCH lower price to fill up two people.
