Both me and my girlfriend have a steam account. We each also have our own local account in Windows 7. But when ever she uses it or I use it; it logs in as the other person. Why aren't the settings kept in the local profile instead of a shared/common registry and how to I fix this.
Also, how do I move my "steamapps" directory. My C: drive is full, but my has 500+ gigs free.
Its because, I believe, the settings are kept in c:/program files/steam folder, which is shared between users. The only solution I can think of is to keep separate installation folders between the two of you.
And you can safely copy/paste the entire steam folder from drive to drive.
Moving a Steam Installation
Important:
Please ensure that you have your Steam account name and password before following this procedure. Also ensure that your account is linked to your current email address so that you can reset your password if necessary.
If you would like instructions to save backup copies of your games please see the Using the Steam Backup Feature topic.
Please observe the following process to move your Steam installation between hard drives or machines:
Exit the Steam client application.
Browse to the Steam installation folder (C:\Program Files\Steam by default) for the Steam installation you would like to move.
Move the steamapps folder from the Steam installation folder to your desktop.
Review the Uninstalling Steam topic for instructions to uninstall Steam (this must be done to remove your old Steam installation settings from the Windows Registry).
Review the Installing Steam topic for instructions to re-install Steam to the desired location.
Move the steamapps folder into the new Steam installation folder to copy all of your downloaded game content, settings, and saved games to the new location.
Start Steam and log in to your existing Steam account to confirm that the move was successful.

hrm, this would work. The only problem is we have some of the same games. Looking at it, we have about 42 gigs of "shared" game files. Having separate directories means it'll take 84 gigs of space.

You can try using symlinks for shared content, but that's probably going into needlessly complex territory. It'll work though.
Honestly, Steam is pretty backwards when it comes to best practices on its applications directory and multiple users.
