Going to New York City next week

So I'm from Los Angeles and traveling to NYC next week. As I understand it, it's pretty cold out there.

What should I wear while I'm out there? Will I freeze if I just have boxers on under my jeans? Gloves and a beanie are a must? I do have a wool coat.

    What I wore today:
    Wool university jacket
    leather gloves
    scarf
    knit cap
    boxers
    dress slacks

I did not freeze to death.

    Thanks Echo!

I just ran into a woman who moved here from NY and she said I should be wearing a hoodie under my wool coat and thermals so I got a bit scared. I'll take your words of advice.

Yeah, it's cold here, but nothing the Midwest can't handle.

If your going to be out sight seeing, then yeah you might want to consider some under armor / thermals / what ever. But for just running in and out of stores, you'll be fine with a hoodie, jacket, jeans, etc. While i don't live in New York, i just worked a 12 hour shift outdoors in 17 degree weather with under armor, pants, 3 sweat shirts.

I would take a look at the forecast before you leave. A week from now temperatures are supposedly going to be in the high 30s (http://www.weather.com/weather/extended/USNY0996) which is totally fine for the outfit you described.

On the other hand, if the forecast changes and you see days where the high is in the 20s and the low is in the teens (such as this weekend), you will want to consider some long underwear/thermals if you plan to be outside for any length of time.

Never heard the term "snow showers" before. I imagine my girlfriend and I will be doing quite a bit of walking around and seeing the sights. Guess I'll have to make a few purchases.

Thanks for your advice guys, much appreciated.
