Super Princess Peach is a shining example of stupidly tacked on microphone gimmick, with the submarine parts. Guys, the controller has 3 face buttons not being used here, and you make me blow at the thing to shoot? Go fuck yourselves.

Which I guess is unfair and pessimistic, but goddamn I hate mic integration and I don't trust developers to not half assedly jump on a gimmick control just for the sake of it being there.

What are the odds that the Zelda games end up working entirely through tilting?

    Too high for comfort

The DS ones already use the godawful touch-only scheme when it would be so easy to just, you know, let you use the D-pad. Also I think both require you to blow into your system

Guys, even if it has motion controls that doesn't mean that you'll be swinging the thing around like a jackass. Most motion controlled iPhone games use the tilt sensor to replace an analog stick for movement. Some rhythm games have you shake it at the right time.

He wanted effective use of cameras and motion, and there it is. If you don't think that's an impressive/cool use of technology then I don't know what to tell you, other than you might want to get out of gaming as a hobby considering the direction things are moving.

The potential for a DSi like device with motion sensing of any kind is staggering. It would take the wasted gaming potential of the Iphone and put it to good use at the very least.

In regards to the earlier 'high definition' conversation I would imagine the next DS will be capable of 720p with most games not going that high. HD is getting older and even for a handheld I don't see why it would be such a surprise to see it included.

I could take or leave motion control, but I could totally get behind replacing the touchscreen by having the stylus have a little IR sensor and sticking a tiny little sensor bar on the hinge.

Dunno if that'd be practical for the next handheld though.

Just about the only game I've seen that used microphone integration well was The World Ends with You. And that was because it was already using pretty much every other button, and being able to just blow instead of having to fit in yet another gesture was actually a relief. Plus it was completely optional, if for some reason you didn't want to attack everything on the screen at once or have a powerful yet easy to trigger spin attack.

    Edit: Also, Nintendogs.

There seems to be some confusion here... are we talking motion control as in A) an accelerometer built into the system, or B) outward-looking cameras/sensors that see/record/interpret motion?

Iwata was talking about a sensor that would be able to detect the movements of the player.

Because you're limited by screen size and it makes no sense to make pixels so small you can't really distinguish between them any longer. Unlike TVs handheld devices can't afford to grow a few inches each generation.

The current screen resolution for the DS is 256x192 and I can see them pushing it up to maybe 640x480 at the max (which feels like a scretch, more than doubling the height and all). Whatever they do, I don't think they'll increase the screen size too much, instead just making the pixels smaller like the GB Micro's screen.

The PSP screen looked awesome at 480 x 272, and the iPhone is a bit higher than that with 480 x 320. Both seem plenty good for gaming--

Actually scratch that. The latest digital SLR cameras have 3" LCD displays that look gorgeous and I believe are 1280x720. I would not mind at all if my next handheld's screen looked as good as my Nikon's.

I'd agree if the DSi didn't add several useful features including SD storage and DSIware and correct several problems the DS had ( Notably Internet connectivity being possible without witchcraft and a browser I don't have to pay 20 bucks for).

Though I'm sure losing the ability to play the 20-30 good GBA games is hard to accept since it's impossible to own two DS or still have a GBA.

I guess that is fair enough. Perhaps as mentioned earlier it would simply be capable of outputting HD to a television screen.

I would imagine a new DS would be the GBA to the DSi's GBC to the DS lites GB Pocket to the DS's Gameboy. Based on this and absolutely nothing else I predict the DS successor to be released sometime in the middle of next year.

I only bought a DSi because I needed a new DS and I didn't see why I shouldn't go ahead and get one. I mean eventually some really great games will come out for DSiWare, and maybe even an awesome game will make good use of the camera. Also I appreciate the additional wifi compatibility even if older games can't take advantage of it.

Still though, I never would've bought one if my lite wasn't getting kinda worn out.

720p might be overkill for a normal handheld but we could be getting slightly larger and higher resolution screens so the vertical resolution would be split between them anyway. Tegra could easily drive two 480x272 displays, though I can't see Nintendo going that route.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about the new DS. What I want to see is the new DS having both screens as touchscreens cause that would probably allow developers to do some cool stuff. More technical power is also nice and I'm curious about the motion sensing. I'm thinking it'll have the same kind of motion sensing as the ipod touch (tilt) and maybe some that involves waving a hand in front of the screen.

I don't mind motion controls on the DS, it could make for some fun games and it's less likely to be abused than on the Wii. In exchange though Nintendo, please remove the microphone.

What do you think of the DS replacement having a touchscreen similar to the iPod's? Something larger and more sensitive with no need for a stylus. It'd mean being able to use the screen with your thumbs would be practical and better than the awkward one-handed way you have to hold it now.

I hate the iPod's touchscreen because you can't use a stylus. I'm not spending a couple hundred on something that's going to get smudged to hell every time I use it, and having each game tailored by the devs to assume giant fingers are in the way all the time. I like precision. Kirby's Canvas Curse would not be playable on the iPod.

Yeah. Because people are watching you pressing what appears to be another button on your portable gaming system which already has a mass of funny buttons everywhere. And it totally looks more conspicuous to other people compared to blowing on the microphone, which totally doesn't look like you have emphysema. Did I mention that everyone is watching you play at every moment and silently judging your moral character by playing ur vidja games?

Besides, I don't masturbate by rubbing my thumb on a single spot. That would chafe after a while, don't you think? Different "strokes" for different folks, I guess! *zing!*
