Blowing into the mic requires me to move the DS to an uncomfortable position in terms of screen positioning from my face and stylus movement. I really don't care what it looks like, personally. I rub the mic because it's far easier to execute those moves that way. I might also be talking with other people while playing (doubtful), and I'd rather save my breath (hah!) for other more worthy pursuits, especially since rubbing the mic accomplishes the same task without losing stylus position or screen positioning. You do lose the ability to use to D-pad at the same time, but most DS games are stylus controlled anyway. It's no more irritating to me than pressing the PS button on my SIXAXIS controller.

And please, it's not like I'm being ultra-lazy here. It's a better solution, in my opinion, so I use it. Feel free to come up with your own.

Rubbing the mic does not replace the pleasure of yelling "Objection!"

Blowing into the microphone is seriously not as awkward as you guys think it is. Just try holding right where you normally do and blowing softly at the system. Voila! It can detect that believe it or not. You don't need to blow like it's a recorder or something or have it right next to your mouth.

What do you think of the DS replacement having a touchscreen similar to the iPod's? Something larger and more sensitive with no need for a stylus. It'd mean being able to use the screen with your thumbs would be practical and better than the awkward one-handed way you have to hold it now.

I hate the iPod's touchscreen because you can't use a stylus. I'm not spending a couple hundred on something that's going to get smudged to hell every time I use it, and having each game tailored by the devs to assume giant fingers are in the way all the time. I like precision. Kirby's Canvas Curse would not be playable on the iPod.

    That's true.

I'm just trying to think of ways to improve the grip. As much as I love the DS it's not very ergonomic and adding an extra wide screen onto the next model is going to make that worse.

Talk of 'looking silly' aside, one major issue I'm having with the microphone blowing in Zelda is that it makes playing in noisy car/train V difficult, as the microphone is constantly detecting noise. When in a place of relative peace I find blowing the pan-pipes to add a nice bit of immersion, but for practical reasons an alternative would be nice.

The PSP screen looked awesome at 480 x 272, and the iPhone is a bit higher than that with 480 x 320. Both seem plenty good for gaming--

Actually scratch that. The latest digital SLR cameras have 3" LCD displays that look gorgeous and I believe are 1280x720. I would not mind at all if my next handheld's screen looked as good as my Nikon's.
Nikon D300s? VGA display. 640x480. One third the pixel density of HD.

They call it VGA, but they also advertise 922,000 pixels, which is what 1280*720 comes out to. I considered whether or not they meant 922,000 subpixels, but I couldn't get the math to work for that. Then I found this Wikipedia article listing displays by pixel density, and it put the D90 at 1280x719 (citation needed).

Looking at the official Nikon page:
    3-inch Super-density 921,000-dot VGA LCD Monitor
Dots, not pixels. I have no idea why anyone would think that counting individual colour components was somehow a useful metric (actually, I do, it's because people will think they're pixels), but there you are. VGA = 640x480 pixels = 921600 dots.

    I'm convinced. Ok, I want a 480p handheld, then. :)

There are several capacitive stylii, though they are a little pricey. And there's actually an entire subgenre of line-drawing games on the App store now, spawned off of Flight Control.

That said, have you tried out an iPhone or iPod Touch and been frustrated with smudges, or is it primarily a theoretical problem? I have a iPhone 3GS, which is purportedly much more smudgeproof, and I really don't see any thumb smudges unless I'm actively trying to smudge the thing.

Besides, I don't masturbate by rubbing my thumb on a single spot. That would chafe after a while, don't you think? Different "strokes" for different folks, I guess! *zing!*

Well, if your DS is like a lady....

Microphone usage is stupid and hopefully removed from the next iteration of the DS.

I would imagine like every other Nintendo handheld they will try and maintain backwards compatibility with at least the previous generation.

So they'll have to keep the two screens? That'd be stupid.

Heh well I am just random guy on the Internet so who knows. It's just traditionally there has been support for the previous handheld. I can understand the hate for the microphone but what is wrong with two screens?

Nah but your logic is correct. They normally support the games before it.

And the two screens just seems a little clunky to me now. If they are able to get the screens bigger then I think I would rather have a higher resolution with a larger screen, than two screens.

I just don't think it'll feel like an upgrade to me if it looks exactly like the DS (which it will if it has the two screens... The DS is setup to have the screens place exactly as they are now... Which means the controls will inevitably be the same... Which means the console will look/feel the same).

Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but it'll probably be like how the GameBoy evolved, changing in small iterations with upgraded features. The next time around, it'll probably have better graphics and hardware in addition to the motion sensing. I suspect it'll have some sort of extra plug in for periperhals, maybe USB or something.

'Course, what with all the 3-D crap they've been talking about at CES, maybe there's a chance it'll support that...

I think they could do something like make the top screen widescreen and leave the bottom screen 4x3 without increasing the size too much, ignoring the fact that the speakers would need to go somewhere then.

Before Nintendo thinks of any next generation consoles at all though, they need to figure out how to associate the DSiWare games with your Club Nintendo account and allow you to download said games on the new system. Locking them to the console forever will bite them in the ass in the future if they don't get on the ball and fix that sooner rather than later.
