So, I literally bought MWF2 about 45 mins ago. Put it into the 360, played online for a few matches, and then suddenly I hear a snap in the Xbox.. sounding like a disc got loose from the optical drive. Regardless, I opened up the Xbox, and lo and behold MWF2 was scratched to shit. I'm pretty fucking pissed for obvious reasons, but is there anything I can do? I bought it from Best Buy and I doubt the Xbox is under warranty. If scratches like these are manageable how do I fix it? Arg.

Are they large circular scratches?, because I've dealt with a lot of these at work and our disc-buffing machine almost always makes them playable again. Do you know any retailers which offer this service? (I don't live in America, so I wouldn't know).
On a side note, I assume the scratches don't go all the way through the disc? Because otherwise it's pretty screwed.
If you can't get it buffed, you *might* have luck if you go back to the store you bought it from and try to exchange it for another copy of the same game.
I'd be worried though about your xbox ruining any more games after a stunt like that.
Um my customer service knowledge is sketchy but I believe best buy will perform an equal exchange for the same product. Also if you bought that game protection thing that covers it too.
So I called Activision and asked about the replacement program. I got an email with the reference number and stuff so if worse comes to worse I have the ball rolling on sending it in. I'll call Bestbuy tomorrow to see about their in-store return policy.. hopefully they will just let me replace it, if not I'm out 20$ and 2-4 weeks to get the replacement disc. I'll check for local buffering services depending on how the Bestbuy call turns out.
The disc does have round circular scratches, a fair many of them too... which are evidently the worse kind of scratches. That being said is it worth it (once I get a new copy) to blitz and try and download it on the harddrive ASAP? Or is it time to start investing in a new Xbox? (The Xbox is now flipped horizontally instead of vertically if it makes any difference)

If your Xbox is still in warranty, I'd contact Microsoft about getting it repaired/replaced. 360s with certain disc drive problems are known to make these kinds of circular scratches on discs repeatedly. If it happened once, it will probably happen again. In the meantime, if you have any games you plan to play a lot and some room on your hard drive, just try to install those games.
As for the game? Just take it to Best Buy and ask for an exchange. If you just bought it you won't need to have the warranty to have it replaced. Much easier than sending a disc off in the mail and paying Activision another $20.
Hollywood Video does (or at least used to, it's been years since I've set foot in one) have a machine to buff scratches out of disc. Most employees don't mind doing it for costumers, so long as you don't act like a jackass since it's really for store use.

I don't know if the Xbox is under warranty still, I asked my housemate about it and he kinda shrugged it off assuming that its out of warranty by now.
I'll try and test it with some blank CD's and see if they scratch up.
If I go to BestBuy and explain to them that the disc was scratched up in my own system will they still allow a return? Or do I have to tell them that I just want a different copy? Sorry I just don't to say something I'm not supposed to and somehow not get the replacement.

Did you just lay the 360 out horizontally now, after the game was scratched? If so, that should help, as I've heard that a vertical 360 is usually the cause of fucked up discs (it is easier for the disc to slip while the 360 is standing up).

You can buy a buffer. They work rather well, though justifying the purchase can be difficult.
If you put a disc into a 360 and then move the system, regardless of the system being on or off, their is a high probability that the disc inside will become offcenter in the disc tray and become scratched like that. Even simply bumping the system will cause it. If you move it with a game in it, eject the disc tray and recenter the disc before you turn the system on.
I'm pretty sure Best Buy's exchange program would be fine. Tell them that the disc was scratched (no need to go into details) and that you can't play the game - and that you'd like to get the exact same game. That problem is solved.
As for the Xbox 360, I'll defer to everyone else here. I'd imagine you'd want to get it fixed so it doesn't do that again.
My copy of Gears broke inside the drive back when the 360 first came out - I called Microsoft and they courriered a replacement to me. Maybe try calling them?
So I went into BestBuy, told them that the disc didn't work when I put it in, and they offered to replace it fo free. Needless to say it's working fine so far, no scratching, and the Xbox is horizontal for the time being. Thanks for the help! This can be locked.

most used/rental places have a disc resurfacer and will buff your scratches out for a couple bucks.
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat
