One thing, my brother has told me is that all the fights or "verses" are in order. So, you can look at how they're numbered and if the numbers are out of order you can backtrack.
Also, some verses can't be accessed until you get certain forms.
Yeah, you'll notice that sometimes you beat Verse 1 and then the next fight is Verse 3.
Just beat that one and backtrack,if possible.
Also, don't forget that you can destroy some walls/rocks/doors!

Speaking of, how the hell do I do those? I figured it would work like Shuffle/Caliber in DMC4, but I cannot not for the life of me get either of those moves to come out.

You need to buy the move and then you can do it at any time. They work very well,I never had any trouble to get them to work.

Yes, I know I need to buy them. Smart guys.
I should clarify. I was trying it with the try feature in the shop and failed miserably at performing the move. It's stick away from enemy, stick towards enemy + attack, right? Any particular timing on any of that? Lock on? No lock on? I think I'm back and forthing about as fast as I'm double tapping for the alternate input on the lockon moves and those come out fine.

Doesn't even need to be away from enemy. And you don't need to lock on.
It's just "left-right-P" or "right-left-P" (or K,of course). It needs to be done pretty fast though.

This game is really unforgiving. I don't think I can even play it on Normal.
The claw guys ignore my attacks and I can't Witch Time them. I am fighting them in a small area and they do about 1/5th my life per attack. If they combo me, it's pretty much death. They combo me a lot.
I can't finish a combo because they ignore my hits. I really don't know what to do.

You can actually dodge and keep a combo going. Let's say for simplicity's sake you want to do a Punch, punch, punch, punch, punch combo. If at your third punch you see you're going to get attacked you could be doing: P, P, P ( keep holding this button), Dodge, P, P.
Basically if you hold down the last button you pressed and dodge you can resume your combo afterwards.
It's ok dude. I've been playing the game for almost 30 hours and still feel like the biggest noob.
Don't tell me how to feel! You don't know me! You aren't my real dad!
I actually feel like I'm parsing these mechanics much faster than I did with DMC or Ninja Gaiden. Or even Viewtiful Joe. I'm only 3 or 4 hours in and I'm pretty comfortable with the combo flow. 3 hours into DMC3, I'd barely made it past the first boss. Which wasn't even a boss. And that was mostly, as my grandfather would say, brute force and ignorance.
I really thought the demo of this game shows exactly what the end product is going to be. Devil May Cry version suck.oh. Seriously, the game takes Devil May Cry and adds shit to it. Why would you do that? They add combos, which are very unresponsive and do not perform what you try to do, so you end up mashing buttons. Witch time is a joke, cause it rarely happens even if you do dodge perfectly.
So what's the appeal to this game? Why should I play this over Devil May Cry, cause apparently there's a giant fan base for a game that's just a rip off of another game.

They actually do work. The combos that is. I know because when I do the combo the moves come out. Witch time isnt a joke at all. Learning that is essential to learn the game. The reason it isnt working for you would most likely be because you arnt dodging at the last second like it says but early on before Witch Time would activate.
And for your last question. Its plain over-the-top action and fun. I love it. But I cant sit here and convince someone to like a game who comes in and totally just rips on it like this. Quite obviously you dont care for it so convincing you is useless. Just dont play it if you dont like it. Simple as that.
This game is just much harder than DMC. I was one of the top two thousand in DMC 4 and I beat DMC 3 on the hardest difficulties. But this game on Normal is tearing my ass up. Im still having fun and learning new things every time I play. I know that some training will make me better so I wont give up. Those Green Herb lolipops are just going to be abused for a while!

Like i'd dig it if someone put a plot summary up on gamefaqs.
Wait.... let me get this straight.... you're SKIPPING... all the plot in the game. Yet, you're complaining because you don't know whats going on?
wow.
i"m complaining that the plot is so terrible i can't stand to watch the cutscenes that's all. I mean i like the game enough even without plot but i'd enjoy it more if the action was framed by cutscenes that didn't feel like they were taking a purposeful shit on my leisure time.

Well, I mean if you want you can just Wikipedia up the plot. It gives you the general jist if everything without having to watch it. Otherwise, I can't help you.
Should I be saving my Halos for moves or accessories?
Right now I am spending them on moves/health upgrades, but the accessories look so tempting.
This is my first play through on Normal and I am on Chapter 6.
Nah,just buy whatever you want, you'll get Halos in spades and if you want to can glitch farm them.
Also, Ryadic I respect your opinion, but I find it really hard to understand. The gameplay here is pretty obviously an evolution of Devil May Cry's system and an evolution in the right direction. I can only speculate that you might not really have the feel for this game's combat yet and thereby just go by the notion of "what I played longer/in the past is better". I also think you might be projecting your hate for the artstyle and presentation of the game on the gameplay.
If you don't want to try the demo a bit more,I understand but if you are willing to try to get a bit more in touch with the combat,I'n sure you'll see that it's not at all how you put it.

But that's my biggest problem with Witch Time is it has to be done at the last second. Sometimes the action is moving too fast with 5 guys gang banging you that you can't always possibly calculate the last second, therefore it becomes pointless. If you actually focus on getting Witch Time then, you're going to fuck up and die. And it's when you have 5 guys on you like that that you really want Witch Time.
Maybe I just wasn't doing the combos right, but I never felt like they went off as I hoped. But like I said, I mashed buttons and I got the same results. It's like playing Street Fighter. The combos do work, but you can sometimes get better results mashing buttons.
Seriously, I played the demo 3 times thinking it'd get better with each play and I was disappointed. I thought I'd like the game, and I don't.

I'll say it again, it sounds like you and the combat just really don't click.
If you have trouble dodging/witch timing against 5 enemies, then the game will mercilessly exploit that.
So your only option is either to train yourself until you can do it and hope that the combat clicks with you or to just not play it.
No sense in playing something you don't really enjoy.

This is not even close to your type of game. I don't mean any offense by that. I just mean that there is nothing here that you will enjoy or comprehend that a person could possibly enjoy. We in this thread may as well be aliens.
Did you check out the demo? That helps a lot on deciding whether this is for you or not.
It's not the fact that I don't think it will be awesome it's just that I have a shit load of games I'm wanting to get over the next couple of months. (Mass Effect 2, Final Fantasy XIII etc.)
Going to rent it for sure though.

I would just like to point out that I just got a phonecall on my mobile phone and Bayonetta was dancing to "Let's Dance Boys!" on the screen as my ringtone.
I may be a fan of this game.
@Geno: Just try to prioritize the kind of games you like to play the most. If Bayonetta is a game you want to play, but not really the genre you enjoy the most, just wait a bit. Also, because of the replayability,I would rather wait for a price drop/cheap offer and buy it,instead of renting it.
I never bother trying to look for the appropriate time to dodge, I just dodge like crazy. I throw out a few attacks, dodge around to the back of my target and continue my combo. Chances are I dodged an attack from it, or someone else and most of the time I get Witch Time for my trouble anyway.

I picked up my dodging reflex abnormally quickly with this game. Like, I'm hitting witch time practically before I notice the attack coming. It's weird.
Except for a few enemies whose tell I haven't worked out yet. Fucking Fairness.

You've got to be fucking kidding me.
You're accusing the dude who made the Devil May Cry franchise of ripping it off? It's not a knock-off, it's the man himself doing it even better than the last time!
Also, the thing about Witch Time is that it quickly becomes second nature once you get used to enemy attack telegraphing. Even in groups, you only have to dodge one. Hell, or you can turn into some fucking bats at the last second and reform to kick their ass.
I mean... I don't know. I guess it's silly to argue about taste and all. But I feel like this game blows all four DMC games out of the water. It is true that button mashing is a bit more acceptable in this... but at the same time effective and beautiful play requires constant awareness and great timing. It's just that it's a bit more forgiving. Plus I mean I can combo off one dude and then spin around and summon a giant hair foot to stomp a guy sneaking up on me and that's completely wonderfun.
But again, if you don't like it, it's no skin off anyone's back. I'm really looking forward to another DMC now... I hope this has DLC too, actually. I have no idea what it would be, but it would just make me happy.

If you really, REALLY have trouble with Witch Time you can buy yourself an accessory that enables it automatically when you get hit at the expense of Magic.
You can also buy the accessory that let's you block&counter enemies and then enable witch time through that.
Hell,if you get your playthrough time to under 3 hours you get one that let's you enable witch time at ANY TIME for some magic!
I wish there was an easy mode that wasn't, you know, one hand penis touching mode.
Yeah,I'm a bit miffed about that. Both modes being automatic is pretty stupid and my current easy playthrough to get the marionette accessory is super boring and weird cause I can never do what I want to do

The Moon of Mahaa-something or whatever? If he's having issues with dodge-Witch-timing, I doubt that accessory would help much.
You know how some demos are just awful for the game they're trying to push (Uncharted 1's come to mind), there really should be a big pink disclaimer in the OP saying that the demo does a very good job of giving interested players a sense of what the game will be like in the full version, and it's a must-download for anyone still waffling on the fence.
