I should clarify that I still think this is a great game, but I was sort of expecting it to have better longevity. I have trouble even finding pub games with the desired difficulty and campaign that I'd like. Sometimes there aren't any Advanced difficulty games going. Not that I haven't played in a while, but I can only assume it's gotten worse.
Yeah, I don't know why I really follow the thread to be honest. This ride was even shorter than l4d1.
Well, L4D1 was new and fresh and people played the shit out of it. Then 2 comes along not that long after, it makes sense that people didn't play it as much. Argue about how drastic the changes were, but in the end it was just more of the same.
In Scavange on the Motel and Sugar Mill maps you can use a pipe bomb to blast the gas cans close to or sometimes into the starting area before you actually leave the starting area. Since the round has technically not started yet and your character never picked up the cans, they won't catch on fire. On Motel it's the Billboard cans and on Sugar Mill its the cans on the 2nd water tower on the right facing away from the generator. Just remeber to leave the area to start the round before dumping a can in otherwise it doesn't count.

Maybe if Valve just released this ish in a patch like they said they would, or as an expansion, then we'd be more hyped up and expect lots of new material in L4D2 - ZING!
Even if it was an expansion, I don't think people would still be playing it. It simply came out too fast. Those people who played the first one into the ground didn't get enough time to forget it so that playing 2 felt completely fresh.
We played the campaigns in the first one for months. Months.
I got the game 3 weeks after everyone else and was having some trouble finding people even willing to play the campaigns. The amount of play time was vastly different from what I saw.

I'm still waiting for a mod that makes the zombies into shambling ones.
And to make them deadly, if they can get near you, they pin you like hunters.
And weapons do way less damage and you get like, 1 tier 3 weapon or something.
The regular infected would be normal spiders, fast but not that dangerous. Hunter would be a jumping spider, smoker could be a trapdoor type, boomer could be a female spider and instead of bile would shake all her tiny babies all over you and the tank would be an enormous tarantula.
Very close game. Thanks to team awesome: Jakorian, Sol Invictus, Fencingsax and myself. Also thanks to Veitsev as always for being my ticket to sweet L4D games.

L4D2 has a lot more longevity as a game than L4D did, the problem is that the game concept itself is a little stale by now. It lacks the inherent variety of other multiplayer games. I think the sequel did come too soon - not because it wasn't worth the money, but because people just weren't that into it anymore so soon after the original without some much bigger changes. I can say with complete seriousness that it would really have benefited a lot from unlocks and perks like CoD4, much more than TF2 does - because the game doesn't have nearly as much inherent variety as more traditional online games. Ask any MMO developer, co-op gameplay is fun but it lacks the inherent replay value of a competitive game without that additional carrot on a stick.

Yeah, L4D 1&2 are terrible when played in random pugs. You really need a group of people you play with often for maximum enjoyment. Especially in campaign mode. Me and my friends are STILL working on getting everyone across the bridge in Expert Parish.
VS. pugs can be fun sometimes but can also be an exercise of great frustration.
I've actually grown kinda fond of pubbie campaign. It's sort of an "expert+" difficulty, where you'll have to really fine-tune your situational awareness and movement patterns, what with the general lack of voicecom users out there. You'll have to jump around servers for a while if you want to find an even remotely worthwhile group but I'm alright with groups being somewhat in the rough; it just forces me to be even more careful. I've become noticeably better, even playing with my group of voicecom friends, by slogging through some hours of pugs, and I don't regret those hours - Zombies were shot, that's good enough for me.
Pub campaigns have become depressingly easy for me, unless it's on Expert. Typically as long as I don't screw up or do something stupid, I can get through just about any map taking only a few hits. Gets trickier with rolling crescendos and finales, but still quite doable if you understand the Infected AI.
Most people just seem to be really bad at avoiding damage; you shouldn't really be getting hit unless it's during a crescendo event or you're trying to save a teammate.
Is that what the cool kids call them? I've always referred to them as salmon events, because you're fighting upstream. Sadly it hasn't seem to have caught on.

Good try trip- but Valve has been calling them Rolling Crescendo's from the get go and I don't see how that's going to get unstuck
I really wish that they put some AI options in the games ala Dragon age.
1. My fellow trusty companions from my list of friends will join me.
2. I shall look for able warriors in ye Armadeaddon Tavern.
3. I have no intention of reaching my destination alive at all and would rather shout at random drunk teenagers as they test the very limits of my patience.
4. Empty suits of armor will accompany me and I shall pretend they're of any use at all.
Your AI options are playing with dumb ones or playing with your friends. The choice is easy to make.
I don't have xbox live so I'm stuck with the bots. I beat the game on advanced last night and am seeing how far I can get on expert on each map. Doing the bridge finale on advanced has taught me a valuable tactic, arm myself with a shotgun and axe and never stop running, only shooting at the infected that look like they will run into me and hit me until I reach a point I can put my back to a corner and fend off the infected who are chasing me with my melle weapon until the bots catch up. They usually shoot the stragglers who I tun past and in turn I am clearing a path for them. I can get to the rolling crochendo in the third map on the first and the one with the gates on the last campaign on expert and to the slope behind the motel in the second campaign. I assume I'll do better at Hard Rain when I learn to duck into houses more often and hold my ground.
Classic moment in the final campaign last night. Creeping through the impound lot, I accidentally set off a car alarm. Coach yells 'oh shit!' as I bust out my chainsaw and start leaping over cars, mowing down anything in my path :P
I'm always so annoyed when the spectator cam shows the first-person view of one of the bots. They track enemies with 100% accuracy, really robotically.

I dunno, the bots are actually better than a surprising number of players...
The things that infuriate me the most are people running in front of me as I shoot and in turn, when people shoot me. Thankfully the bots can't cause freindly fire and are always behind me unless they spy a health pack/pills. I like the predictability of them too.

Or just heckle Veitsev till he gets a game going.

Now that shit would be scary
I've enjoyed the Versus and Scavenger games I've played with PA people. Playing with randoms is just not as fun.

Thankfully Valve has reduced the likelihood of that happening by keeping out any close quarters weapons like melee aw shit.
