Team Fortress 2 had a plot?

Wow, Team Fortress 2 has a single player mode? Or are you saying that we should completely ignore the mode that the vast majority of the games budget would've been spent on?

Also, if 'better is subjective' then how is MW2's multiplayer 'unmatched'?

I'm mostly happy to see that 'Splosion Man did as well as it did, and that I wasn't the only person who voted for it as his GOTY.

Batman as the winner was probably both deserved and expected.

I wonder of games like Demon's Souls would have been higher if they weren't exclusives.

I'm sure they would have. It would give them more exposure.

I'm genuinely surprised to see something like Torchlight rank over New SMB Wii. That's not a comment on quality, since I haven't played Torchlight, but more an observation on how I think the demographics here have changed, I suppose.

I'm woefully behind on checking out most of the big bitters of '09, mostly due to having little money, but I have Arkham Asylum finally on the way from Goozex so I'm fully prepared to have my ass blown out by its sheer awesomeness!

(And more people need to play Retro Game Challenge and Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes!)

Borderlands wasn't #1 overall? I call Bat-bullshi - aww, who am I kidding? He probably planned for this to happen all along. AA wasn't my favorite game this year, but it was still damn good. Nice to see it get recognized like this.

I'm surprised A Boy and his Blob (#79) ranked so high. I guess I wasn't the only one who liked it so much.

I guess I just thought Batman: AA was spread kind of thin. Everything about it was fairly enjoyable, but nothing about it felt very, I don't know. Fleshed out? In-depth? It felt like a Saturday morning cartoon, which I suppose is pretty appropriate, but not really GOTY material to me.

Suprised NSMBWii didn't place higher. Tbh, the final results showcase what an average year this has been for videogames.

Drivel. It's been an exceptional year.
Sigh. I knew Rune Factory Frontier was going to do poorly, but 120th? I actually know all four people who picked it #1. Oh well.
A European release for the damned thing might have helped.

The thing about Batman: AA is that it has very broad appeal and it's multiplatform, both things that help drastically in a poll like this. Whereas something like Dragon Age: Origins is much more niche (it's a very specific type of RPG that's won't even appeal to all RPG lovers - your average JRPG fan isn't going to be very interested in it) and is really geared towards a specific platform (I can't be the only one who hasn't gotten it because I hear the 360 version is weak compared to the PC version).

Makes sense since it's a $20 game that has been discounted to as low as $5. Personally, I thought it was a good game, but I like Titan Quest more.

Yeah, I had fun with it, but it's just seriously not top 10 or 20 material imo. Well, at least the best Diablo-style game ever still beat it. And I also agree that Titan Quest is better.

Hm, kinda surprising how low Uncharted ended up.

I'm happy with how Demon's Souls ranked: low-ish, but with a lot of #1 votes.

I don't really see anything truly exceptional in terms of execution in that list, just solid, but not inspiring games. Even with my favourite games this year (Borderlands/RF:G), my overriding sentiment was 'this would be great in other games'.

It's the highest ranked non-multiplatform title. If it had been available on the 360 & PC as well, it probably would have taken the #1 spot.

Right, well, it still got more than 100 #1 votes, so I guess that's a fair assessment to make.

Give us an example of another year, and what made that year exceptional. Lots of people had a ton of fun playing video games in 2009.

I was really happy with 2009, I didn't have nearly enough time to play everything I wanted to play. Dragon Age, which had hilariously bad advertising, turned out to be one of my favorites. Left 4 Dead 2 proved the haters wrong, and Borderlands was the most solid co-op game I've played, even for all its bugs. I was one of the few who voted for Forza Motorsport 3, probably the best racing game ever created 8-)

Yet Dragon Age still managed to pull a solid 2nd on the list. That says something about Dragon Age and that Bioware really do have a lot of pulling power with gamers.

I really do love Bioware RPG's. The worst one I ever played was Jade Empire and it was still decent. It's one of the few companies that puts stuff out that I can reasonably assume I will enjoy before waiting to see how the game turns out.

The thing I'm happiest with though is that SF4 stayed pretty consistent (10 - 12) regardless of how the poll is taken. It's such a great game.

Okay. I didn't say it was a bad year, or that I enjoyed no games, that the games out were objectively bad or that no-one should have had fun this year playing games (Lord knows I have). I merely think this year was above average as opposed to stellar.

To answer your other question I think the 2008 poll is much better in terms of game quality.

Regarding Arkham Asylum, I was a little unfair and should have said exceptional in execution while also pushing the industry forward. I look at the 2008 list and I see GTA, Braid, Dead Space, TWEWY and I see a momentum not reflected in the 2009 list.

I still really enjoyed 2009 and am looking forward to Borderlands 2 and seeing someone take the Red Faction engine places.

Edit: My first TOTP! And with a possible thread derail ...

    No it's not

I was thinking along the lines of the common phrase "turn of the century," as in "let's have a poll to see what's the best game since the turn of the century," meaning since 2000. Anyway, this is cluttering the thread, sostopit.

List seems pretty solid. Brutal Legend ranked way higher than I expected, which is great. Plus, the goddamn Batman.

Zeno Clash at 43 disappoints me, though. And Riddick at 65. And Bionic Commando at 90? At least I feel better being one of the 23 people to express something approximating appreciation for that game than I did being one of the 5 people that liked Dark Sector last year. It's... it's like I almost have a crew.

What platform did you play Bionic Commando on? If PC, we could play the multiplayer sometime. I've also voted for something that only got 5 votes, Space Invaders Extreme 2. I wonder if there's any people that played that, but didn't put it in their top 20 because they had a bunch of other games.

Since I'm the only human being on Earth who hasn't yet played Modern Warfare 2, I can't comment on how much of an insult to all that is decent and aesthetically pleasing it is that said game wound up at #4, but I can pretty much guarantee that Team Fortress 2 has more interesting characters and probably a more coherent plot than MW2.

I'm also waiting to play AC2, but since Ubisoft almost certainly won't bother to put subtitles in the PC version (again!) I'll probably pass until it hits the virtual bargain bin.

I'm a bit baffled that anyone would consider 2009 less than a stellar year for gaming. Well, unless you don't own a PS3 or something.

Edit: Oh, and to pick the smallest of microscopic nits, Canabalt counts as an Iphone exclusive even though there's a Flash version?
