The new forums will be named Coin Return (based on the most recent vote)! You can check on the status and timeline of the transition to the new forums here.
Please vote in the Forum Structure Poll. Polling will close at 2PM EST on January 21, 2025.
As a reminder, the list is comprised of the top 30 games of MCC's poll from 2004-2009. Game rankings and Metacritic were used for the years 2000-2003. It is entirely possible I left off your favorite game, you should probably PM me about it. Nomination suggestions of yearly sport games will be mocked unless there is a consensus of a best year.
Edit: Games with expansions have been grouped together as long as their original game came out after Janurary 1, 2000. The list is also missing most of the console designations, but at this point most people know what systems a game has been on.
It's missing Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones, the best one in the trilogy.

Funny, I think 2009 blows 2008 out of the water, at least where game quality is concerned. Of 2008's Top Ten, I think I'd only unhesitatingly recommend Rock Band 2 and Dead Space to people are truly quality games. It makes me sad to see King's Bounty and Yakuza 2 buried at the bottom of the list, while truly mediocre games like Fallout 3 are at the top.
On the other hand, 2009 has a handful of truly exceptional games: AC2, B: AA, DA:O, Demon's Souls, Torchlight. It was a good year for gaming. Bring on the next!
Thinking about it I spent most of 2009 playing two games released in 2008.
Really, the one thing that a lot of people said in the voting thread is that they were only able to vote for a couple of the games because they hadn't had time to play the rest. Makes me wonder how 'professional' game sites can do their lists in early/mid december.
I think it'd be really interesting to try doing a goty poll sometime in the middle of the year, say after the big Q1 rush of games which miss the holliday season. Sure the big games are usually held back until October/November because that's when they sell, but I always got the feeling that there was also a bit of a bias in the awards because those games were also the freshest in mind.
That's a great games of the decade list: I found myself making my own top 30 list, and dang is it hard but fun to look back and make those decisions.
Has it already been 8 years since Ico came out? ...Man. (My personal favorite of the decade.)
Man, I find it hard to figure out a top 10 for even a single year, I doubt I could narrow it down to 30 even just keeping it to a single platform (except the PSP). I'd need at least 100 slots to even start thinking about game of the (console) generation, much less decade.
Regarding Arkham Asylum, I was a little unfair and should have said exceptional in execution while also pushing the industry forward. I look at the 2008 list and I see GTA, Braid, Dead Space, TWEWY and I see a momentum not reflected in the 2009 list.
o_O You've got a bizarre point of view if you think those games pushed the industry forward but none of 2009's games did.

If you're really going to go forward with this, just create a nomination thread. 305 is a tiny number when you're talking about an entire decade and you'll find there are a lot of people that're way too lazy to PM you their nominations (like me). Also, let us vote for more than 20 games please (preferably 50).

Mcc is going to be hosting the voting in the same fashion as the 2009 GOTY poll. I have asked him to put it up on Monday, giving you the weekend to nominate. I still prefer PMs as they're easier to keep track of.
Wow, I wasn't the only person to vote Retro Game Challenge as GOTY. Hi5 to my unknown internet brother (or sister).
I didn't vote for very many games, partly for financial reasons, and partly because many of the games I played in 2009 came out the year before, or were older games. My #1 game for playtime in 2009 was Civilization Revolution, and I obviously couldn't vote for that.

Alright, I guess I'll shoot off a PM to you with the games I'd like on there.
Edit: Thinking it over again, I still recommend making a thread. I'm guessing there'll be quite a few people here that won't regularly follow this thread.

Its amusing that I can tell who's PMed you based off that list of additions .
Oh shit, there's going to be a game of the decade poll? That is going to be incredibly difficult to narrow down.
Metroid Prime for me, probably.
...I guess that wasn't too hard.
At this point mine will go to Shadow of the Colossus. The rest I don't know. It's really hard comparing games I played way back in 2000 to games I just played a few weeks ago.
It's weird that NSMBW placed lower than NSMB DS did in its year considering that it's at least twice as good of a game. Either G&T's Nintendo bloc isn't what it used to be or '09 was just a stronger year.

Even if it's done better, doing the same general thing again looses a lot of its impact the second time around. (See also: L4D2)
It's odd yeah. Although I didn't rate NSMBwii very highly myself.
To be honest the game just didn't have any lasting impact whatsoever. Sure, it was great while I was playing it, but it was almost as if the second I put down the controller I'd already forgotten it existed.

Yesss, Prototype in the top 20.
I wonder how different the poll would be if you ran the poll for the previous year. Like, at the end of 2009, you asked for the top of 2008. Because as a lot of people have stated, they haven't had the time to play many of the titles listed yet, especially ones released at the end of the year.

Also, those of you imporing me to make a thread, I will as soon as work stops shitting on me tonight.
I'm happy to see Batman won, to be honest. I only started playing it recently after Giantbomb gave it best multiplatform but I would have put it at #1 as well.

I have grave doubts as to whether Nintendo will keep to the 2010 release date on Zelda.

And Blazblue is even in the top 25...pretty good for a game that didn't have much hype.

Planescape: Torment just barely misses the decade
And Game of the Decade is going to be tough... so much quality gaming. If only Jagged Alliance 2 wasn't released in 99...
Ogre Battle 64 just barely makes it in!

It broke the top 100 at least. I was one of the two who ranked the game second this year. Where you the other one? If so, hi5.
Making a best-of list out of those will prove to be difficult.
Man, I totally called it first.
I haven't decided on how I'll order my list yet, but Majora's Mask is definitely in my top three.
