I just started playing this the other day and got my wizard up to level 5. Hopefully the addiction will be milder this time, I can't afford to give EQ another 3 years
Did you have to change your spell file again when you switched servers? I was thinking of venturing out on another server, but I need to change my spell file and I don't want to reinstall EQ all over again.
I started playing around on this "solo server" that I saw in the list and didn't change my spell file at all from P1999. Haven't encountered any bugs or anything hindering at all, they're fairly interchangeable I guess.

Yeah, luckily kept a back-up.
Things were all sorts of bonkers, my Shaman couldn't get SoW until level 255 according to the P1999 spell file.
E: ...and not that I wanna be a downer in this thread, but even EQ with the PoK books is too time-consuming now that I'm working full-time over the summer.
Won't get any better once I'm back at school.

I tried to log in the other day and my game started patching. I'm not sure whats happened to it but the way I understand is that it should never patch.
Not sure if I'll be getting back on this afterall. Gaming wise I am burdened down with Monster Hunter and Galaxy 2 is out in a few days here in Europe...and WWIIOnline just released a large patch so...D:.
Not to mention the slightly manic last few weeks of college. Maybe when Kunark comes out. We'll have to roll Iksars or something Gandite, it's the only way.

I don't want to give up but reading the forums and watching all the horseshit. It really is ridiculous. That forum is no joke the worst place on the internet. How could something so good bring out so much bad in so many people.
I know I'm gonna regret this, but hell...going back to the one MMO I really had fun with is too big a temptation to pass up.
So, on about average, how many people are logged in at any given time? My only concern is if there are only 50 people playing at peak times, it won't be nearly as fun as it could be.

At peak times its getting pretty packed. When I first joined the server was normally like 200-300. Before I left crushbone we had hit over 500. Now at peak times I usually see 600-800.

Yup. Looks like there's about 600 people playing, which is about as heavy a server got back in in EQs heyday.
Anyway, I've got a couple of characters to level 2, a druid and enchanter, but I dunno if I'm gonna commit to it yet. It's been great for a quick blast of oldschool hardcore nostalgia, but I need to see how much spare time I got before I say I'll definitely play a character to 50 or not.

I just thought I'd goof off but then I got to my teens and the PA guild had some good folks in it and we pretty much partied to our 30s. I still want to play but I know no one in my level range and finding another guild just seems meh. I'd like to be 50 before Kunark but I just can't do it. I don't want to get into raiding because its just a shitfest on this server.
When it was spread out across content it was one thing. All the guilds in the appropriate tiers had their content to deal with. Here because theres only like 6 or 7 targets currently its really disastrous. I'm just not sure I want to be part of that.

So I just figured out how I messed my game up. I deleted my original shortcut that you make so the game won't patch. I'm logged in if anyone wants to shoot a tell to Gandite.
edit: I'm making a concerted effort to get back into this. Drut you have three weeks to finish the semester and if I don't see you I'm coming to england to show you whats what.

My character name is Gulth. I left the guild because it was just Banhru and I playing. Send me a tell if you see me online. Currently working through lvl 40.
Put a petition in on the p1999 forums to see if I can have a GM move Drut out of there, hopefully they will since it isn't something I really had any choice in. Fingers crossed man, fingers crossed.
It's probably about as populated as I remember the original EQ being, more or less.

If you check the website it shows the server activity as well as how many people are logged in. Its 9 am here and there's almost 300 people logged in. Last night when I was playing there was over 700.
It's pretty active, you can find deserted areas if you try hard enough but there's also areas where you'll struggle not to be kill stealing people/reading chat due to the amount of woooords. That's at peak times though. I haven't played for a few months and there were always groups going in the popular zones and apparently peak population has increased by about 1/3rd now.

I love that auctioning is now done in EC. I bound myself last night at the tunnel entrance and just waited. Within a couple hours I made 300p porting people around. Ended up getting a group in Paw and after two yellows I had to evac the group. Rogue survived with 33 hp hah.
Ohhh damn, I wish I didn't start this. I've already dug up that old thick EQ playguide that game out with the original game way back in the day, and I can already feel that tickling sensation that's usually the first sign of hardcore MMO addiction rising up again. I guess I'm here to stay...at least til 20 or so.
And I've decided to play a Cleric. Usually I play tanks or crowd control, but I wanted to try something a little different this go round. I figured a healer would be a good thing to try. So if anyone needs a level 2 dwarf wearing nothing but a pair of gloves he found off a snake and a big stick with which to hit stuff with tagging along, I'M YOUR MAN!
