Guys, i just got booted up on this game and my mind is blowing. How do I talk to NPCs? What do I do?

    I'm an troll.

Also, i'm struggling to get it to stay full screen.

Target them up then hit H to hail. Or at least that's the way it used to be done. So far, I haven't seen a single NPC respond to me.

As for what to do, you go out, fight, get money to buy some loot, and get used to dying alot. I mean really. Get used to dying. Alot. :P

Anyone on a vent someplace? Want to try and group up?

Do the NPC's usually have quest?

Some do, if you can get them to talk. Don't expect WoW type quests though, or even a little marker showing that an NPC has a quest for you. This game is very much about making you figure stuff out on your own.

And yeah, I'll be willing to group with you tomorrow. I'm going over to Freeport after I hit 5, which is kind of near where you're at in the swamp (if I remember right..it's been like 9 years since I last played). We could meet up there.

edit: what's your name ingame? I'll send you a tell and help you out a bit.

No, that's wayyyy on the other side of the map from Freeport. You could meet me when you hit 10 or 15 or so, but it's a long walk with lots of bad things in between, and a pain in the ass if you don't know exactly which way to go.

If you want to play with me, start up a High Elf, Wood Elf, or Dwarf. I'm in Kaladim right now (though I won't be able to play long). And if you want to send me a message, hit enter to bring up the cursor, and type /t Renzan then blah blah for the message.

Water is the devil. If you ever fall into the water in the dwarf city, there is NOOOO way out.

Figured it out. You have to be in first person.

In other news, this game is really tough and i'm a little overwhelmed by it. Its a nice feeling but scary. Not totally sure what I need to be doing. I guess running around and grind mobs? :-/

EQ is a social game. Few classes can grind their way to 50 and even fewer people actually want to. Socialize as much as possible and find groups. You will find that many people level at a similar pace and you will group with people over and over again or at least that was my experience again and again. That's what I love about the game. You will become a part of the community because you basically have no choice.

Yup. The only thing you can do that early is get your level up and learn the ins and outs of the game (and accept the fact you will get your ass kicked on occasion). Since I probably won't have much time to play tomorrow, you can get your guy up to 4 or 5 and we'll be able to group. Makes it much faster to level, which means it'll be that much sooner before you get to the really fun part of the game: the dungeons.

The learning and difficulty curve of this game can be exceptionally brutal especially since this is classic EQ. This game produces hardened killers and not carebears.

The good news is you'll have lots of people who remember the game well enough to hang around with, and a whole internets full of info to look up if you ever get stuck.

Though let me tell you, playing tonight reminded me why I dropped the whole MMO habit. There I was, having a blast, realizing I had to go to bed, but felt driven to get just ONE MORE BUBBLE before I turn in for the night. I'll have to curb my enthusiasm here, otherwise I know I'll be playing it til 5 AM again and getting up at 8. Just like I did back in 2000.

As long as it doesn't get to the point where I have to decide between friends, lovers, country, and a tan Vs. level 30, I think I'm good.

There is no PA guild anymore. Also druids run amok on this server so I suggest something else for the sake of balance.

After playing this last night, i'm definitely intrigued. I'll probably reroll a different class that starts off a little faster. I spent a couple hours last night auto attacking as the paladin. Got really old pretty fast.

I need to figure out how to try to do some of the quest. A lot of the NPC's in the dwarf area didn't say anything to me. Maybe some of them are broken?

We should start a guild or at least all get on a Vent server somewhere. Someplace where we can communicate together.

Quests are few and far between in EQ (ones that are worth doing are even rarer). Even if you do find an NPC that seems to be looking for help the hints they give can be really vague or cryptic, still baffles me how people figured out some of the quests. There are a few quests that are worth doing at low levels that give good exp and decent low level items.

One is in the Dwarf city, I forget his name atm but he asks for Crushbone belts off the orcs in Crushbone (you can get em off the ones outside the zone as well I think). There's something iffy on this emu with him where you have to hand them in in the exact amounts or you'll get no response. You get coin, decent exp and a piece of leather armour for each belt you hand in. I never roll anything other than Troll/Iksar so hopefully other people will be able to fill you in better.

Someone mentioned a gnoll fang quest with similar results in Qeynos. But basically looking for quests is fairly pointless tbh. Apparently about half of the quests in the original EQ are still undiscovered/unsolved.

Thanks for the detailed explanation on what I don't get. Auto attacking gets boring after a while. The game has quest that give stuff. It is also important to communicate with others in the game. What about this seems strange?

You're right. Just hitting auto attack (and sometimes kick and bash), then hoping for the best does get kind of old after awhile. It's the reason why I usually play caster classes in EQ. Alot more variety, and alot more fun.

If I were to recommend one class for someone new to the game, it'd be a Necromancer. They're incredibly powerful, and have a whole slew of spells you can fire off to neat effect. Against the undead, they're near unstoppable, and against everything else they still kick huge amounts of ass. Necromancers are about as close as EQ comes to an easy mode.

Or if you want a class that takes a bit to learn, but has a HUGE AND DRAMATIC AND AWESOME effect in groups, play an Enchanter. You won't do massive amounts of damage, but you can freeze 5 monsters in a line then get two of them to fight each other while the group works on the last. They're fun as hell once you get down the ebb and flow of everything. Truthfully, there hasn't been another class in any MMO since quite like an Enchanter.

There are other neat classes, but those are the two I'd recommend the most. One is easy to play and fun as hell to play. The other hard to master, but equally as fun.

I'm going to give this a shot to see what classic EQ is all about now that my exams are done and reports are handed in.

I tried EQ once back in 2002 but didn't really understand mmorpgs back then and the guy who tried to get me interested in it basically just power leveled me in some frog cave for a weekend and I didn't understand anything and it was awful and I uninstalled it. Think I played a magician back then, elemental pets and could summon stuff I think?

So attempt number two basically, I'd prefer to play something with low xp penalties and that is either good solo or can get groups easily, small order I know. Looking at either a Cleric (preferably) or a Necromancer (maybe? Sounds like it's not all that wanted in groups?) right now, from reading the p1999 forum and looking at spell lists. Possibly a dark elf. Will playing as an evil character make things unnecessarily difficult?

Edit: Trying out Moorkus, halfling cleric.

haha, that's EQ. I loaded this up a few months ago when the thread started. I was so out of pracitce it took hours to hit level 4. (there seems to be a gap for mobs. level 1,2,4 no level 3 things to kill where i was.)

EQ is slow and takes forever to level. The fun comes from having people to adventure with.

EQ is a slow paced game. You really have to earn your levels and it makes dying significantly more serious. This isn't like WoW where you can cheese shit by dying and running back to your body. Death here is a significant loss.

Or, I just can't handle the XP reduction on this server. It's 20% less then retail was...

Even knowing what to do in this game, it still requires a ton of patience and luck to get anywhere. I hope that guide is a decent enough starting point. I don't exactly have a wealth of knowledge on EQ, but I don't mind answering a few questions. If I'm in the area, I'll even drop some plat your way.

I'd be all for starting up another PA guild or somehow getting a hold of the existing one, too.

I plan on re-rolling, but I don't know what to. Either I go Human or Wood Elf Druid, or Barbarian Shaman. I just don't know halas at all, but I do know faydark to a point. And I really know free-port. Plus, I can play the hell out of druids, and really enjoy the class.

Faydark is a pretty easy place to start, and is only a shortish walk away from the docks to Freeport if you want to bolt over there after getting in in the levels (which is what I'm doing).

I'll be on around 9 tonight to finally get my guy to level 5. And I'm also pretty stoked about a guild. The guild I was in years and years ago wasn't too good for helping anyone out. So being in an actual good one in EQ would be like a whole new experience for me.
