Ok, pretty new to the game and I don't want to read through the whole thread for answers to these in fear of spoilers so I'm sorry if these are dumb questions.
I went through the tower of mages but I killed the old woman in the beginning... I'm beginning to understand that that may have been someone that I could have added to my party. Is that true? Who should I be wary of not killing in the future? I have zevran and sten already.
Also, I finished the tower, but if I want to go back there is it still possible to go get the treasure and stuff? I'm up to the dwarf city now.

You must mean Wynne? Yea she is a companion and a pretty decent one, one of only 2 mages you can recruit. If you already have Zev and Sten there's really noone else to recruit other then a spoilerly guy towards the very end of the game, you'll know when you get to it. You can also leave Lilliana in Lothering if you're not carefull I suppose.
I'm going to replay this to have a save game with all the choices i want to have etc etc.
One question though, Dual wield warrior or rogue? I've seen the backstab stuff the rogue can do, but i reaaaaly prefer looking at templar armor. So, any guidance on this?
I prefer the rogue, personally, but the big difference is that with the warrior you'll be using 1h swords instead of daggers and you'll pour everything into strength rather than cunning. You also won't have to worry about backstabs as a warrior and you can just hit everything head-on. However, keep in mind that Templar armor is pretty heavy and puts on a lot of fatigue, which isn't ideal since dual wield takes a lot of stamina.
Like General_Win said, though, just go with whatever you would like to play rather than worrying about which one is theoretically "better".
Well i would just *pick* something and go with it. But last time i played dragon age, on normal i think, it was a huge reload fest and i don't feel like doing that again. Pretty frustrating and stuff. Also yes i know, mages are fantastic etc etc

Well, like I said, both specs are completely viable and I wouldn't really say one is better than the other. I like the backstab mechanics and stealth so that's why I prefer the rogue but a dual wielding warrior is just as good, especially thanks to the Bravery talent which restores stamina for every kill you make. Whatever character you decide on, though, the only thing I'd tell you to watch out for is not to put on too heavy armor. I'd say medium armor would be about as high as I'd go because Momentum really drains your stamina and adding fatigue to that will mean you'll go out of stamina in no time.
Yeah, you murdered Wynne. Listening to Morrigan often turns out poorly. It also sounds like you missed Leliana in Lothering and Dog from Ostagar.
No, I have Dog and Leliana. I just said Sten and Zevran cause you can't kill Leliana and Dog.... I imagine I could still get Leliana if I wanted to at this point.

I'm not really interested in Awakening to be honest from what I've read. The fact that it's going to strip me of stuff in a game with a dearth of decent stuff in it is just insult to injury.
Another way to think of it is - maybe they have increased the variety of interesting gear, and they want you to look for that instead of just sit on what you have?
I'm sorry Loki, but this makes no sense at all. Most people would switch gear in a heartbeat for something superior - and even if they decided to sit on their existing gear, so what? They PAID for it, they should have the option to do so!
You know, I still can't stop being irritated by the guy in my camp who is a blatant advertising billboard for Watchers Keep. It just breaks immersion so much to have this guy go "DOWNLOAD DLC HERE HURF DURF".
I am in a grrrr mood today.
Yeah, I think it's been beaten to death that immersion is broken at that point, but I personally find it interesting to see what developers these days come up with in order to promote DLC within games themselves.
It's gone from having a damn popup automatically come up telling you to purchase to dialogue choices. Pretty soon you're gonna have it hidden in some obscure conversation tree, only hinted at by the subtle wink the NPC throws towards the camera.
Edit: And as far as DLC items not transferring over into the expansion, is it so far fetched to believe that it would, for some reason unbeknown to my limited knowledge of programming, be extremely difficult to transfer over "privileged" items onto a whole new game? I'm assuming Awakening is going to be played off the disc (or installed, if you like) and act like a completely separate game, where you've simply imported in your character via a saved game. All of the DLC items are linked to the DLC content and your gamertag, and there could even be some shady reason Microsoft gives for not allowing you to share "rights" between titles or some silly shit.

Actually...
Dog:
You can kill Dog, unless you're a Human Noble.
Leliana:
Once you complete your first treaty quest Lothering is destroyed. If you miss Leliana, she's not recruitable after that point.

I'm a human noble, so there's that. Also, Lothering got destroyed? Did I miss that somehow? I have the templars on my side so I completed the first treaty right?

Yeah, you completed a treaty. But there's not actually any notification of it happening.
If you look at your map, Lothering icon will be a skull (I think), you can't select it, and oozing black representing the darkspawn hordes will go past Lothering.
Man. Last month I thought "40 bucks is a lot for DLC, even if its expansion sized, and I'm in the middle of ME2 and I still have to finish up AC2 and I want to give GoW3 a chance and and I still have Uncharted 2 barely started... and and and."
Cross-posting this here and the steam thread, as the latter hasn't given me an answer and this is probably a better fit.
Also did a quick search through this thread with no luck.
Has anyone had any luck getting Dragon Age: Origin registered with/on the Bioware website for the purpose of downloading the toolkit?
It didn't take either of the keys Steam gave me, and the Toolkit isn't available through steam directly for some reason.

Wow, okay, I found a mod I like. It changes Morrigans appearance so she looks like the original actress they were going to use for Morrigan. And it makes he look really good. Haven't found anything good on the gameplay side of mods though, aside from the respec mod.

The less mods you use the better at this point. All I have is the respec mod and the forced deathblow mod... and I'm afraid those are gonna screw with awakening. Only time will tell I suppose.

Does anyone know of an effective way of having ranged characters shift to melee when attacked by a melee attack, and then shifting back to ranged when enemies are at middle or long range? I use the advanced tactics mod.
I tried this tactic:
Behavior: Ranged
Self: being attacked by melee attack: shift to melee weapon.
Target at medium or long range: Shift to range weapon.
But it often creates a weapon switching loop; the character keeps switching between ranged and melee weapons. I tried a lot of different ways of getting them to switch between ranged and melee, but either they don't switch back to ranged when not engaged in melee, or they get into the weapon switching loop.
Does anyone know of a solution?

Clothing, I'll agree because what she wears in game is just ridiculous.
Face-wise, the sacred ashes version seems pretty monstrous to me.
Do you guys have any suggestion for a not-completely-horrible main character voice set? Just hearing the previews, violent didn't seem too bad, but then... "Can I get you a ladder, so you can get off my back?"
I'm going for a good old, righteous, morally ambiguous templar (like the penny-arcade comics).

Meh, I think that the face of the Sacred Ashes Morrigan actually look like a person who used to live in a swamp. Pretty enough but with enough flaws so she doesn't look like the typical fantasy models you usually get in RPG's.

People who don't understand Arachnophobia, no you're not funny and yes even virtual ones are terrifying. Especially when they're this well made.
Ha, I remember way back before the game was released, someone posted about their massive fear of spiders and actually asked the devs to make an option to turn off the spiders.
I'm very curious about Arachnophobia... I wonder why a massive amount of people are so scared of spiders. Why not sharks or bees or jellyfish.
Well, whatever the case, I'm glad theres a mod for ya! But how the hell do you play fantasy RPG's... giant spiders are a freakin staple of the genre.

I don't know, I have a pretty huge jellyfish phobia.
But I really wish Dragon Age had fewer spiders anyway. As big a staple as spiders in RPGs are, they just aren't very fun to fight.

I agree the Sacred Ashes face does nothing for me. The concept art one was nice, but that really wouldn't work at all with Claudia Black's voice. Considering the youngish/impish look of the concept art.
The violent one is the best for humans imo, except for that line. Wise isn't horrible from what I remember, if a bit high. Cocky may not be as horrid as you think.
I have a huge case of arachnophobia, and I wasn't too bothered by the spiders...The ones in the Deep Roads were pretty bad but other than them I was surprised by how minor my creeped-out levels were.

Because there's literally no chance that I'll turn around on a rainy day and see a shark or jellyfish that's crept into my dry house sitting on the wall, staring back at me through a multitude of eyes. A bee maybe, but a bee is just a yellow fly with a stinger.
That said, the spiders in this game didn't bother me in the slightest.

That's just what the Sharks and Jellyfish want you to think.
Honestly, if it has more than four legs it is terrifying and I do not want to ever see it.
I was going to say that, but considering my favorite seafood is octopus, it's not quite accurate. But there's something about how a spider moves that makes my hair stand on end and scream like a little girl.

But he's so cute! Look at his widdle face and his claws like that, he thinks he's people!
Edit: My personal pet peeve, now I think of it is when you have spiders in a game and they run around chittering for no reason. SPIDERS DO NOT CHITTER DAMMIT.

Yeah. After all, he's the only character who you can't miss, tick off, or kill.
See claypoolfan's post for a demonstration.

Turn Spiders Into Bears!
It works perfectly.

I would pay good money to see an FPS with this in it.
