N64- 21. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64) <2000>
GC- 15. Metroid Prime (GC) <2002>
GBA- 120. Golden Sun (GBA) <2001>
I can live with this. Golden Sun placed higher than DS juggernauts such as New Super Mario Bros. (124), Mario Kart DS (125) and Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Trials and Tribulations (128). This is especially noteworthy considering it came out in 2001 on the inferior GBA. Surely this affirms the general appeal of the franchise. Golden Sun DS, bring it on!
The highest game of the Advance Wars series is the original Advance Wars (157), narrowly beating Dual Strike (162) and crushing Black Hole Rising (250) and Days of Ruin (276). The original Fire Emblem also placed highest (147), just beating Path of Radiance (153) and obliterating Radiant Dawn (287) and Sacred Stones (396).
Also, The Wind Waker beat Twilight Princess. My faith in humanity is restored.

Wow apparently I have unconventional taste in games, only 5 of my top 25 made it into the final top 25 list, my number 1 was at number 55. Only 2 other people agreed with me.

Alright I don't mind you praising the original Fire Emblem (I'm actually currently in my, like, 13th replaying of it) but Radiant Dawn was also incredible and I hate seeing it do so poorly. I'd be happier if it just switched with Path of Radiance.

Watch me not defend Sacred Stones. Look at me go.
I don't even consider FE7 my favorite game of the series which is FE6.

Both games have Bartre. You really can't go wrong.
Kindof off-topic though since FE6 never got a US release.

My number 1 (Jet Set Radio for DC) came in at 143, and over half of my picks failed to break into the top 100.
Awesome list, even though I personally disagree with some of the rankings. I do find it pretty hard to be upset considering you can't really go wrong with the top 100 or so.

Seriously, we're all winners here.
Hi5!
I agree, although initially disappointed that Deus Ex wasn't higher than a 6 I quickly realised most (some?) people here probably just started gaming in the noughties or late nineties and soe missed out on the PC stuff. Consoles were the 'in' thing around then. Really, a fantastic list but many of my favourites are in the last fifty lol.
I bet with a lot of the games (fire emblem, castlevanias, etc), they would be a lot higher if they didnt have so many similar sequels. I just picked my favorite FE and castlevania games, and left the rest out, as not only are they extremely similar, a lot of it blends together for me.
Derivitive as they may be, I still always pick up the next installments, because they are still great.
Personally I never understood what was so great about Half-Life, the first or the second.
Counter-Strike was the thing that kept HL1 going. And the single best thing in the Orange Box was Portal for its innovative gameplay. I'd actually go ahead and say Portal had a better plot than HL2.
I'm sad to not see Mafia listed anywhere in there Then again most of the greatest games ever tend to be stomped by other simple yet successful games. HL2 is by no means a complicated FPS game, and fits for the masses. Of course selling a lot doesn't necessarily mean it's all that good. Then again it'd be hard to get a mainstream FPS player to sit down and play Civilization 4 or Baldur's Gate 2, or even appreciate them.
Mass Effect's the one game in the top 10 that I really don't think deserves to be there. I mean, I think it's a good game, I'm replaying it right now and have pre-ordered ME2 but frankly, it's a very, very flawed game. That's why I'm looking forward to ME2 so much.
I'm fine with the rest of the list though, despite a bunch of games showing up that weren't on my list. Sucks that it had the least votes since the very first one back in 2004 though. Probably has something to do with it being pretty rushed through the nomination and voting stages.
HL2 is pretty underwhelming for a #1. There's almost nothing to do on a second run. It's a good experience, but a short-lived one.
I'd be willing to bet the average person doesn't do a second run of most games. So that's probably not really taken into consideration much.
I dont know, a lot of people would consider replayability a big factor.
For me I tend to separate my games into two main categories. Things that I'll likely play only once (ex: Mass Effect, PoP 2008, BioShock) and games that are endlessly re-playable (ex: Counter-Strike, Street Fighter 4, Civilization 3/4). For the former I'm just looking for a good fun memorable experience, for the latter I'm looking for something I can play all the time. I'm generally playing the endlessly repayable while I'm waiting for another good single player story driven game or I'm playing one of both types at the same time.
I'll say this generation the only games I'd put in my "one time play-through" category that I've completed all the way through twice are Portal and Devil May Cry 4. DMC4 didn't make my top 25 and I've never actually owned Portal.
I was willing to concede that my not including any Bioware games were due to my lack WRPG skills I however can't say that for Mass Effect it's shooting mechanics and squad AI are just very, very clunky
I've played through Half-Life 2 about 4 or 5 times, and I definitely think it deserves to be on the list. I probably wouldn't put it at the top, though.

Mass Effect? Ha, what a joke. A good game by any measure, but so so many problems that take away from the experience.
Seriously. The fifth best game of the decade? I can hardly even fathom. I guess any game on the list has flaws, but there are some particularly egregious ones in ME.
Anyway, Metroid Prime not being in the top ten is a travesty.

I've played around 11 games in that list. I don't think any of them made my top 25. They're good, just not GOTD material to me.

You have to take into consideration the general populace who voted. I'm betting most of them play PC games and play very little console games. Or the exact opposite.
Metroid Prime was, however, #1 of 2002 (Guh! Mafia should have taken that place!) and #1 of Gamecube. To me that pretty much says it was a super-awesome game, yet it was only on Gamecube, leaving it out from a lot of players. Multiplatformers tend to be more successful in that regard.
I own Half-Life 2 and I want to know if I need to play the first Half-Life to enjoy it.
you'll miss out on some in game jokes, but no, you definitely don't need to play the first. HL2 was probably one of the most enjoyable single player experiences I've ever played, and I think it's a well deserved #1 spot, even though it wasn't my personal choice.
You have to remind yourself that this list doesn't reflect the 'best' game of the decade, but the most popular. The sheer ubiquity of steam and Half Life 2 basically guaranteed Valve the top spot.

Well inevitably that's what makes these lists a little futile, it's all subjective. I was blown away by HL2 but it wasn't the best game I played this decade.
I own Half-Life 2 and I want to know if I need to play the first Half-Life to enjoy it.
There are a few references to the first game in 2 but apart from that no I wouldn't say you have to play Half-Life 1 to enjoy it (you still should play it though I'd say even after all these years its gameplay still holds up pretty well)

Haha, some great stuff in that ranking. The rankings in a single series are especially interesting. The third Devil May Cry outranks the first one by far, Paper Mario TTYD trumps the original and absolutely destroys Super Paper Mario, Golden Sun wins over Lost Age, Metroid Prime 2 doesn't even show up, Wind Waker is rated higher than Twilight Princess (I'm still laughing! It's glorious!) and MGS 3 wins over 2... It's hilarious, interesting and entertaining all at the same time.
The only in-series-ranking I just can't get behind is the Jak series. The second one last? Blasphemy!

Hey, it's Bizarro Me!
In an example of how everyone has their own opinion, I absolutely adore Mass Effect, warts and all, and thought that Metroid Prime was a soulless tech demo of a game that's one of, if not the most, over-rated games in modern history.
Also, Vampire: Bloodlines is only 37th? Beyond Good & Evil is only 48th? UT2004 is only 117th? For shame, internet, for shame!
On a more positive note, I wasn't the only person to vote for City Of Heroes! Thanks for redeeming my faith in your taste, internet!
I can't talk about Buldar's Gate II because I never played it, but does it read like a fanfiction, too, or might it be something I would like? I really hate Mass Effect, but I like Vampire: Bloodlines and Black Isle's games.
Black Isle were involved, at least partly, with Baldur's Gate 2.
So yes. The writing's a lot closer to the Fallout 2/Planescape: Torment standard.
Go and play it.
You know, I just might.
I hope I regret its absence in my top 25, even.

Glad to see so many.
