Has anybody heard Anything about the Dreamfall series of games? The two games that I know about (dreamfall for PC and dreamfall the longest journey for pc and xbox) were awesome but they came out a long time ago and there was a huge cliffhanger at the end of the second one. Can anyone help me find info on any new games in the series?
The Longest Journey is perpetually installed on my computer, but I've never finished it. It is quite interesting, and I'd like to finish it off, but i can't get the gfx to letterbox properly on my monitor and the stretched everything drives me nuts.
I loved Dreamfall, but the cliffhanger was a pain in the ass. The only thing I know of sequel-wise is the aforementioned episodic stuff, which so far is vaporware. FunCom are working on another MMO called The Secret World at the moment. Maybe they'll do a sequel once that's out; I wouldn't expect anything before then.
well, heres hoping they work on doing more on this series it was great (I am still creeped out sometimes when I hear the girl say "find april ryan, save april ryan") maybe we should sign a petition or something

That's what we said when they were developing Age of Conan. It doesn't appear to have worked.

I want to play Dreamfall with my girly lady. Can we start from there or will we be confuzled without playing the first one?
Well, actually it starts from the perspective of someone new and only tangentially touches on parts of the old story, but you really want the context of revisiting those old locations and seeing what happens to all of the characters.
Why not just play Longest Journey first?

I liked Dreamfall way more than Longest Journey, and it's also aged better, but TLJ is still good and you really should play it first.
It's a pity TLJ had that puzzle with the rubber duck and the clamp. Most of the puzzles actually made some degree of sense, but that's the one that everyone remembers.

Ironically, I don't remember that at all. And I loved TLJ though to be fair I played it upon its European release.
Addendum: I didn't much care for Dreamfall.

And I am spiteful for this. There needs to be some rule about cliffhanger endings in games. Only if the sequels are already picked up for publishing, or some such thing.

The rule should be that developers should never implement something without a guarantee that the game will merit the idea. The two biggest offenders are usually cliffhanger endings and multiplayer achievements.
Also, if you do create something which people look forward to a follow-up, then don't focus your resources on some other project.
wondering if they are both still alive, I mean one of them gets stabbed if I remember correctly and the other is off in some creepy place telling storys to a weird guy...
so yeah, if a publisher does a cliffhanger they should drop evrything theyre doing and GET WORKING ON THE NEXT GAME
Dreamfall was a terrible, terrible game and would have worked better as an interactive picturebook. Godawful combat, terrible stealth sections, horribly easy puzzles... and the story really wasn't anything like as deep and intelligent as Funcom repeatedly made it out to be. Still, I do admire Ragnar Tornqvist. Anyone trying to push honest-to-God storytelling in videogames is worth cheering in my book, and it's a shame his games aren't that great because they do have some absolutely stunning setpieces every now and then and take some fairly daring narrative risks. Which is generally enough to keep me playing, so, eh... it just about balances out, I suppose.

<AtlusParker> Sorry I'm playing Pokemon and vomiting at the same time so I'm not following the conversation in a linear fashion.

Yeah, this is the postion I'm in. It's on my PC, I just need to get the willpower to play it through. I bought the box set they released with both games, as well as an art book and OST for Dreamfall purely because it was cheap, and a friend said it was pretty good. Hoping that wasn't too bad a decision.
Dreamfall's mechanics were pretty awful, but it's important to remember that it was an adventure game first and foremost. The story was intriguing, and that's generally why it received high ratings.
And funcom made it? That makes me sad. I was hoping for the cliffhanger actually being concluded.

News you can use! (FAILURE TO USE THIS NEWS WILL RESULT IN TERMINATION)
I loved Dreamfall. The fact that I hardly even remember the combat/stealth is at least an attribute to the fact that I didn't consider it terrible enough to have ruined the game. Which is something, I suppose.
I still think it is one of the most visually astonishing adventure games out there. But if you consider how that game played out, I think it's a miracle it even existed. Hence why making the next "chapters" is such a challenge. Man, they should just ship Ragnar over to Telltale and get cracking on it.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
I loved those games. It's a shame funcom would rather go balls deep in shitty mmos than continue a good series.
Cliffhangers should be outlawed in video games. They work better on something where there isn't a few years and $60 between finding out what happens. I defy anyone to point out an example of a good cliffhanger in a video game.

No, that's pretty much how it ended.
Though, I think...
...given that Dreamfall didn't pick up squarely where TLJ ended, I wouldn't expect a DF sequel to be so convenient. If anything, it would probably focus on the warrior dude since the game had so little to do with him.
Dreamfall ended in a good spot. The developer? Not so much.

I don't have my hopes up specifically so that when FunCom announce the sequel, I'll be pleasantly surprised.

The two games in the series are The Longest Journey, and Dreamfall. There aren't any other games for the series so far.

I mean, it wasn't bad and I liked it more than a lot of people, but holy shit did those parts suck.

Fuck funcom, fuck Tornquist.
I really like Half-Life 2's ending, though I suppose I'm in the minority there.
Erm... Soul Reaver?
I've never played Soul Reaver, though, so maybe it was good and I just missed it.

Yes, it's pretty apparent that it was made with the Xbox controller in mind.
