3rd Gen iPod works fine until plugged in...

So I'm loading a bunch of albums into iTunes and I wanted to synch them to my iPod but when i tell it to synch all I get are these clicking sounds and then iTunes beachballs on me. I know what clicking sounds mean on hard drives, so I unplugged the iPod and reset it. To test it out I put it on shuffle and just kept hitting next. It worked fine on playback but when I went to plug it in again it just kept clicking and iTunes wouldn't recognize it. If it's dying, well, I'm disappointed, but I think I'll live.

Got any ideas?
