OK, so my friend sends me his video, on this torrent thing, and I don't have a fucking clue how it works. He says I probably need something like uTorrent to download it. I get uTorrent. I follow the steps... and I watch this video download in slo-mo.
I started downloading yesterday, and right now it's at 7.0 percent 'done'. it's a 1 gig file. I guess my internet has been a bit slow recently, but come on. I'm on wireless broadband. it can't be that slow, right?
so, TL;DR, I'm asking for an explanation of how utorrent works, what it is, that sort of thing, and why mine might be working so slowly. also, a solution. go go help/advice!
uTorrent is a BitTorrent client. BT is a peer-to-peer protocol. Kinda like Kazaa/Napster/Limewire... but it works better (usually), as lots of people share with each other simultaniously. Your problem is probably that there are not enough people sharing. I recommend reading the BT FAQ on bittorrent.com and the instructions for using uTorrent.
Note: BT shares on a "tit-for-tat" basis, therefore limiting your upload speed may limit your download speed (unlike Kazza, etc.). If you set your upload speed to be low, you won't likely get a good download speed.
Summary: there are 3 reasons your download speed may suck: not enough peers, limiting your upload speed, or (this is less of a problem) having a firewall or wrongly-forwarded ports. Google for further help, there are loads of BT tutorials.

the more people downloading/uploading this file, the faster your speed will go
