So, Spawnbroker and I are heading to the city and the end of this month, and will be there Friday night (but we have something planned that night), Saturday night, and Sunday we're spending the day there.

Now, I commute to NYC multiple times a week, and I know some inexpensive places to go to, but not many. I'd like to know about some fun (and free, or incredibly cheap) things to do there on Saturday night, and Sunday. We're horrendously low on money, but would still love to have a good time as this is a big weekend for West Pointers.

Thanks!

You're cadets? Did not know that.

    Anyway, standard NYC weekend advice:

Pick up the onion the week of when you commute in. The AV club has tons of free/cheap things to do in the city. Same for AM and Metro

Verlaine on Essix is some damn classy cheap drinking, 6-10 happy hour.

UCB theatre is good value lulz for very little cash.

I'll definitely pick up the Onion when I see it!
Unfortunately I'm not 21 just yet, so going to places to drink is out.

You could always hit up a tkts booth and see if they've tickets to anything worth seeing.

Student rush tickets to a show or lottery might be worth your while. I'm not sure how expensive the Top of the Rock is, but if it's cheap, it's a nice view and apparently pretty romantic. I can list some cheap places, but in general, 9th ave between 42nd and 56th has pretty good food for a whole range of prices (and hallo Berlin has some pretty cheap sausage). Finding a wraps/hummus place is usually a decent bet for a good amount of food for under 10 bucks a plate. Failing that, thai.

    Got that right.

    --Shit, wait. I mean....uhm *cough*

Edit: Any cool stores we could check out? I plan on taking him to Forbidden Planet, The Strand, The huge Barns and Nobel in Union Square. Maybe check out FAO Schwartz and the
Toys R Us in Times Square (Our hotel is in Times Square, yessss). I also plan on hitting up the Met (freeeee!) and I'm going to front some cash and take him to The Museum of Natural History as it's really cool in there, and then maybe go for a walk in Central Park as it's right across the street. Things like that, but I'd like more options, y'know? So far all the suggestions are great.

Anyone know any good and inexpensive hole in the wall restaurants in Manhattan?

As far as I'm aware, the Met is only free to Members and Columbia Students, everyone else has to pay SOMETHING to get in, even if it's just a buck. That said, even at full price, it is one of the greatest museums in the world. Also, go for a stroll in frozen central park. Around 28th and Madison to 3rd is the start of the REALLY good Indian places, specifically South Indian, for cheap-ish. Just wandering around there you should stumble onto something.

As I said above, 9th between 42nd and 56th or so is as cheap and as varied as it's going to get. And even that isn't super cheap.

There are slices of pizza to be had around $3 or so on 7th ave above 26th. BF and I were in the city for the first time this weekend, and food prices didn't shock us too much. You can find cheap food if you look, just like any other city. For us, just walking around was pretty fun...we did that all day Saturday...just walked around and checked everything out. The Toys R Us in Times Square is pretty insane. We went to Nintendo World against the recommendations of everyone here, BF liked it.

We got into the AMNH with $2 for two tickets. The ticket agent just looked longingly at the $2 as though he wished it would be more money (requisite guilt trip) and then printed our tickets. So yes, the posted price is a suggested donation. As far the the AMNH, we spent 2 hours there and didn't see nearly enough. We hit the dinosaur exhibits and the Hayden Sphere, which are AWESOME. We saw a few more exhibits but the Hayden Sphere was probably the favorite of the ones we saw.

To save money/have fun, walk everywhere. We just did it and it was the coldest weekend they've had in a while, according to people we talked to. It was in the teens, but still bearable. Have fun!

Talk a walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.

It's free and has great views.

Don't go to the top of the Empire State Building. If you want to do a tall building, go to the Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Plaza. Much MUCH nicer and a better view to boot.

I work by Columbus Circle and one of my favorite resources for food is http://midtownlunch.com/ . 99% of all the food on there is $10 or less. They also have everything sorted by "cuisine" and put out a review of the food they have.

edit: I highly recommend Hallo Berlin (744 9th Ave @ 50th Street) and Biriyani Cart (SW Corner of 46th & 6th) never fails me.

Luckily since I'm an art student in the city, I can also get into the MOMA for free too with a guest. It's awesome. Which reminds me, the Tim Burton show would be good to see!

I actually had NO idea that the AMNH was suggested donation as well. I'm taking full advantage of that, oh my goodness.

Edit: Midtownlunch.com is awesome, thank you!

Doubly edit: Whenever I'm in Union Square, I always pass by the place "Chocolate by the Bald Man". It'll probably be pricey, but I"M actually curious about it. Has anyone been there?

Chocolate by the Bald man is my girlfriend's favorite place, lol.

It can be decently priced if you're smart about it. The Pizza's are 100% sharable for 2 and only $13-14.
The deserts are more expensive, but there is some damn good value there. I recommend the Eurpoean fondue. It's only $26 for two and it is delicious. The sampler desert platter is a cant lose either.

Yeah, I've heard some good things about it on like... The Food Network, and I always pass by it, but it's good to know that it actually has some good food. Seems like a cool atmosphere as well.

This is what I have so far:

    -Museum of Natural History
    -MOMA-tim burton
    -The Met
    -Forbidden Planet
    -Strand
    -Barns And Nobel
    -Nintendo Store
-Toys R Us (just the general checking out of Times Square)
    -Chocolate by the Bald Man
-That cool beer bar place in Union Square (I can't remember the name but it's a brewery restaurant and it's fucking delicious)
    -Central Park walk

Come to think of it, since all the places I have listed are either stores (Like forbidden planet and The strand, etc) and buying shit is optional, or otherwise free museums and stuff, I think it would be nice for me to splurge on the two of us going to a nice restaurant, or something.

Any recommendations for a really nice and tasty restaurant? Price doesn't matter, I'll decide what I can afford.

    Kickass.

-If you want to go to Tim Burton on the weekend, get there motherfucking EARLY. It sells out quick, yo.

-Barnes and Noble in Union Square is something to do? I didn't realize there was anything special about it other than it was a perfect place to get thoughtless christmas gifts when I worked by there.

-You're thinking of Heartland Brewery. :) Damn fine eating.

Haha, I just thought the B&N would be nice to go to since it's fucking huge, and Spawnbroker and I loooove to read. I figured it'd be good to have a relatively good size list when we go to the city together, so i'm just popping things on there that sound fun to me.

And YES! Heartland Brewery. God, I love that place.

if you go to Top of the Rock you can get a combo ticket to see the Bodies Exhibition for much cheaper. In fact a lot of museums and such have combo tix, especially the for-profit ones. Worth looking out for, you save money by planning ahead to do multiple things. And most of them you have up to a year to use the combos, so it's not like you have to do it all in one day.

For meals, I love Ramen Setagaya on first avenue -between 10th and st. marks? I forget..- in the village. Bout ten bucks a bowl, cheap appetizers. Salty and huge portions and so so good, plus crazy weird japanese TV! Cash only as I recall though.

Also on st. mark's, check out this place called Jules cafe- between 2nd and First ave I think. Live jazz, delicious frenchy cafe food. Delicious for brunch! Look up their times first though, they keep kinda weird hours and are not open at all on wednesdays? Something weird like that.
