Yeah, thinking about it, the Underworld engine was pretty fucking good.
There were hardly any loading times IIRC, and the levels were fairly large geometrically, while the graphical quality was more than adequate. By bringing the camera even closer over the shoulder and into first person even, with clever level design, you can probably do much more than just a room with a bunch of ledges to climb up and down off of.
It's promising at any rate. Just as much as Deus Ex 1's level design was. Those were some pretty large levels. Not always used very efficiently, but fairly large for the perspective.
Take the encounter with the barman in Shanghai's Hive nightclub for an example - a scarred, Asian 50-something with an augmented right hand. You're looking for and must correctly read your new friend's (quite brilliant) facial animation as you choose between 'pinpoint', 'insist' and 'threaten' from four different options.
You get a wheel with each of the four options [joke, threaten, insult, and compliment], and differently sized pie-slices in the middle. You pick a big pie slice to get a big reaction, and a small slice to get a small reaction. The character will react to each of the four options differently (as represented by facial cues), so you have to try to choose a big pie slice on the options they like and a small slice on the options they dislike.
The second quote is Oblivion's much maligned conversation minigame.
The rest of the preview looked great, but I really want this mechanic in more detail.
Eurogamers says that multitools and traditional creep up/knock out mechanics are gone. I'll be sad to see them go, but I think the game as a whole is going to end up being pretty great.
How could anyone conceivably end up with the Oblivion persuasion minigame again? With pie slices and everything?
To be perfectly honest I liked Oblivion's idea. They only fucked it up by making you pick all four options in each round. The general idea of guaging a person's face is something I can get on board with. Of course Oblivion's faces were also sculpted out of Play-Doh by capuchin monkeys so that didn't help things either.
Eurogamers says that multitools and traditional creep up/knock out mechanics are gone. I'll be sad to see them go, but I think the game as a whole is going to end up being pretty great.
Seems like, and looking at some of the violent screenshots seems to imply this, that they're emphasizing the "shooter" part of FPS. I guess I'm ok with that, as the shooting mechanics in the original DE weren't amazing in the first place. I think part of the reason that I always play stealthy is because I didn't love shooting!
As far as multitools go, as long as they give you plenty of options and solutions, I'll be ok with that.

I took it to mean, instead of just clubbing guys over the head, you do a takedown animation instead, though I could be wrong.
Hmm, that would be alright too. The mouseish "ooh" that the bad guys let out when you got them sneakily will I'm sure be missed, but a takedown animation could be alright. It might get old if you're doing a lot of stealth, though.

I'm a huge fan of how there's trash all over the place in bladerunner. I'm really looking forward to a game atmosphere where that's recreated. Although this screenshot appears to be an actual in game render, that trash is obviously photoshopped in, and quite poorly, I might add. It worries me that they may not actually be able to do that kind of thing in-game.
Literally every screenshot in this game appears to have had a partial paintover. This is standard procedure for a lot of companies for work in progress games I think but generally not for screenshots you release. It's just sort of weird. Frankly I don't care because I'll judge the game when it comes out but if they don't want the Internet to go into crazy nerd hyperventilation mode they're going to have to get more careful about specifying what they're releasing.

The one from Oblivion may have been terrible, but Alpha Protocol uses nearly the same mechanic and it works great. It should be fine as long as they give you a way to find out about the person you're talking to before you have to start guessing about whether or not they'd like to joke around. Also, if the facial animations are actually worth something, you might actually be able to figure something out about them without having to get them in super pissed-off mode before actually being able to see that they're angry.
Yeah, it could be awful, but other games have been released since Oblivion using a similar conversation system and they've done a pretty good job of it.
And I wouldn't worry too much about the photoshopped trash in that one shot. Most of those shots look like conceptual shots or paintings and it's enormously easier to just photoshop in some garbage for reference than to design and create trash for that same shot. So far, I think we've seen practically nothing out of the actual game.

I would bet it's just like the Splinter Cell: Conviction take downs.

I'd be fine with that, as it's really not much different. Also, the preview says tranqs are in, which is awesome.

Stealth melee always results in a silent third-person takedown animation - it's your choice as to whether it's lethal or not.
I like the idea of this conversation system. I'm a sucker for Mass Effect-type cinematic dialogue. This sounds even better, as it's deeper than just choosing to be a saint, neutral, or a dick. Watching for clues in their body motion sounds fun; hopefully they can pull it off.
The cover system seems fine to me as well. I enjoy the splinter cell stalking around. It seems more realistic to have a 3rd person camera helping you see the lay of the land rather than popping your head out into a brightly lit hallway over and over while the guard walking directly at you doesn't notice.

EDIT: While these are amazing, they seriously look more like concept art than in-game stuff to me. I guess it's kind of like GTA IV with it's smear filter, but more painting-like.
EDIT 2: Uh, I think there are concept art pieces mixed in here, unless this is what the game really looks like. Or I'm missing something obvious :P
EDIT 3: Yeah, they're art, my bad. The actual screenshots are the second gallery.

Game sounds more & more like a proper Deus Ex title.
Cannot fucking wait.

Yeah, it's kind of ridiculous. At least all the glowing eurogamer previews is from live footage though, and they say it looks beautiful.
