Eyeglasses and Me! I think my eyeballs are lazy little bastards!
So after recently getting my drivers license renewed I have discovered that while my vision is acceptable. My independent eye vision is pretty awful. So I'm in the market for some glasses. Only problem is I know nothing about these strange oblong discs that people suspend in front of their faces. I have no eye insurance, so I need tips on where to go for good prices. What kinds of things should I look for in glasses or eye doctors? What kinds of things should I avoid? I'm not a big fan of contacts, so I'll be hoping to stick with just the lenses.
Whatever you do, don't get them online. For your first pair of glasses, you're really going to want an actual person you can go see to get them adjusted and make sure they fit. If they're crooked and the optician snaps off a temple or nosepiece adjusting them, it's not a big deal. If you try to do it on your own and break them you're kind of screwed. And you have no idea how crappy the soldering job is on even $300+ frames.
What is independent eye vision and why would it matter?
The ability of your eyes to work, well, independently. You can have good combined vision (forward field) with shitty independent vision. See "Lazy Eye Syndrome." Why it would matter is because you need good peripheral vision for driving so that you can clearly see mirrors/people beside you/that idiot swerving across three lanes/etc without constantly having to swivel your head.

Looking for a DX:HR OnLive code for my kid brother.
Can trade TF2 items or whatever else you're interested in. PM me.
If you have job benefits, there is no reason to abuse any vision plan you might have to get the good shit. However, I'd say stick to some cheap frames for now. You'll eventually figure out whether your eyes are getting worse and at what rate.
Mine are pretty set on 20/40 nearsighted for the past 4 years so I got two durable, full warranty glasses to last me until I can afford cheap eye surgery in a bar in Mexico.
Yeah, I may do that, go get cheap frames for a bit to see if it helps me out. I wonder how much my vision has been limited to non periphery stuff because of the eyes being lazy like that.
And no, monocles are not what you want for a lazy eye (unless you have two monocles). You need set of frames that actually work with both your eyes to make them both work together.

Seconding this.

My left eye for instance does not see as sharply as my right eye. Does that mean I should actually use a monocle

You can put prisms inside the glasses to align your eyes.
