Adjust volume separately for open programs (Snow Leopard)

Is this possible?

If I have several apps open, and they don't all have audio controls, is there a way to set the volume of each individual app? Googling suggests a program named Detour, but apparently it doesn't work on Intel Macs.

Can you share how you do it for safari? I'm curious.

I've wanted this so hard since vista came out with it.
The last post in this thread sent me to "Audio HiJack Pro" which is by the old makers of Detour. I actually haven't tried it (and don't currently have a machine from which to do so) but it might help!
