Name that book!

Ok, so this may be a long shot, but I figured I'd give it a whirl.

I remember reading this book back in like 5th grade, so roughly '95. It's a story about a kid (let's call him John) who meets another kid (let's call him Steve) that is highly into baseball and very good at it. Steve teaches John everything about baseball and they become the best of friends. Some things I remember about the book is that Steve's dad is an alcoholic. There's one point in the book where they go to a baseball game and he's drunk and starts yelling at some guys there and ends up spilling beer all over John. John gets home and his mom smells the beer and then worries about her son being around Steve's dad.

Now the ending goes like this and I'm going to spoiler this just cause.
Later in their lives (probably around high school) Steve becomes an alcoholic as well. They are both still very much into baseball and still great at it, and they have a big game coming up or something. Well they're out partying and getting drunk and Steve gets into an accident while drunk and dies.

Anyone that can help me out please do so. I got a cousin who is getting around that age where he's starting to read for pleasure and he is nearly done with the Harry Potter series. He's also getting into sports as well, so I think he may enjoy this book. I know I did. I ended up reading it twice.

And I guess if anyone wants to add their own books to this thread (similar to the G&T name that game thread) feel free to do so. I really don't mind.

Finding that one was more work than usual, but the book you are looking for is:

Heart of a Champion by Carl Deuker

Thank you. I appreciate that. How'd you find it? I tried but because of the little information I knew, I just came up empty.

    Well I AM a Librarian ;)

I googled around a bit, used "book kids boys friends baseball alcoholic father" or something like that, then digged through some of the results that popped up.

I don't know how old your cousin is, but this is a book for kids I really enjoyed, if he hasn't seen the movie already I'd say get that one too:

    Holes

Holes was pretty good. When I was a kid I liked Maniac Maguee, but that might be a bit young.

I think that might be about the time I started getting into Star Trek books.

Also recommend The Hobbit if he hasn't read it already. If he loved Harry Potter he'll probably love it.

I have two for you, Librarian:

The first is a story featuring two friends and/or brothers, on a trip; possibly cross-country. The elder of the two has a girlfriend. The younger does not, but he does meet two charming girls on the way: the first is (possibly rich) beautiful. A distinct passage would be that when he closes his eyes he can smell her perfume; 'like wildflowers'. He gives her his most prized possession: either a shark tooth, or a shark tooth necklace. The girl thinks it horrid and returns it. Heartbroken, he and his companion continue on, eventually meeting a second girl: far plainer, but when he closes his eyes, he can see her face. He gives her the shark tooth (if it's not already a necklace, she makes it into one.).

And the second. Nearly positive it's a green cover. Takes place in a forest, and centers on a flying squirrel who is in love with an owl. The owl is prim and proper; the squirrel from the wrong side of the tracks. She refuses his advances. I do not know if they get together in the end.

I do not know how old I was when I read these, and I've spent many years off and on searching for them.

Possibly I dreamed them both. I can certainly see the latter being inspired by Leatherwing Bat.

Never read it, but I think this is Mystery in the Night Woods. At least based on the reviews and my good knowledge.

You may very well be correct. Weasel sounds familiar. I will journey to HPB tomorrow and see if they have a copy.

As a young adult I have no shame in saying that Harry Potter is the bomb. I was kinda into it through the series but after reading book six I was hooked and then book seven, oh man, don't get me started.

Please tell me that you have already directed this young impressionable man towards Pratchett. Hook 'em while they're young.

I still have the Colour of Magic sitting on my bookshelf unread. I know, people probably think I'm a terrible person, and guess what, they're right. :)

Also, thanks everyone for the suggestions.

For any young reader choose your own adventure is amazing. For those of us with disposable income, they're on twitter for news and website updates and on the kindle for when cheating with your thumb just isn't enough.

His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman got me into reading when I was around 11.

    Definitely recommend them.
