As most of you will recall, GTA IV and Mario Kart came out within a few days of one another--and while Mario Kart had a mildly successful first day, GTA's was crazy and we were sold out the first day.
But then was when things got interested, day after day, week after week, Mario Kart just kept on selling--to the point where it was hard to find constantly---and it remained that way even after the holidays.
Seeing the way that game is performing now isn't that surprising seeing how it started.

Holy crap at Wii Fit selling ~7 million total this year, and Mario Kart Wii selling over 3 million in its 2nd year.

I was always amused at people who thought Nintendo was stupid for releasing MKWii next to GTA IV and that MK would be crushed as a result.

For comparison, here are last year's December NPD sales:
* Wii - 2.15 million
* NDS - 3.04 million
* X360 - 1.44 million
* PS3 - 726,000
* PSP - 1.02 million
* PS2 - 410,000
The Wii sold 10,151,000 total last year.
5,784,000 up until December this year. Add the millions to get the total for 2009 in the USA. About 9.6 million. Not much of a drop.
Yeah, I while ago I was saying that it was hard to compare 2008/2009 Wii numbers since people were buying them as Christmas presents well before and after the normal shopping season. But I didn't expect to be this right.

So is there supposed to be a Rock Band 3 this year? I ask becuase I'm on the Wii and due to its development dates, theres no support for large sd cards or track packs/albums in RB2. Beatles rock band recognised the large sd card so I'm hoping these things will be in place.
I'd ask in the Rock Band thread, but the only answer I ever get is " get a 360 and spend lots of money on the games again, and the guitars and the tracks I'd have to buy again" both in thread and in real life.
I call bullshit. Nobody here in that thread seriously pushes that advice unless the question you ask is 'Should I switch to a 360 for the Rock Band games?'
As far as RB3 this year, that's the expectation. Though nothing has been announced officially. They stated late last year (maybe at Gamescon) that there will probably be a full band RB game and RB3. The Green Day edition has already been announced, so that leaves RB3.
And yet it happened. The question I was asking at the time was: could one of the HMX guys tell me when the hell was RB2 coming on euro wii, and the only answer I got was "get a 360". But by all means call me a liar, thats sure helpful of you.
I said 'Nobody here'. Did you ask this here, or on the Official Forums. Because, and this is key, no known HMX developers post in the RB thread on these forums.

"It’s no surprise we’ve seen PS3 units sold every month nearly double since October. We knew 2009 would be a turning point for the platform due to the new price and a content line up that is fueling unprecedented consumer and industry interest with games like UNCHARTED 2: Among Thieves. The consumer response has simply been overwhelming and we anticipate the high demand for PS3 to continue into the coming months as we work closely with retail to meet the demand. The best part of PS3’s story today is that 2010 will offer entirely new gaming experiences to consumers as we launch MAG, God of War III, 3D gaming, and the new motion controller this year. It’s never been a better time to be a PS3 owner.”

After a rough financial year for the industry, tracking firm NPD reported today that the US retail console game industry generated $19.66 billion in revenue in 2009, down 8 percent from the record $21.4 billion in 2008.
The group also revealed that December was the industry's best sales month ever after beating December 2008's revenue by 4 percent.
"Clearly, 2009 was tough year for consumers and the national economy. However, the bigger picture is one that underscores the industry’s strength; 2009 and 2008 were the highest grossing years in our industry’s history," said Entertainment Software Association president Michael D. Gallagher in a statement released alongside the NPD result.
"Our industry's structure is solid, and I anticipate a strong 2010 with a pipeline full of highly-anticipated titles," he added.

NPD released a full-year list of the top ten US retail console games by units, a list heavily dominated by Nintendo. The publisher was responsible for seven of the top ten titles for the year, six of which were released for Wii.
But the year-end number one seller was the Xbox 360 version of Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, whose PlayStation 3 counterpart also made the list at number 8. The remaining slot went to Bungie's Xbox 360-exclusive Halo 3: ODST.

So, HUGE boost for the Wii and DS. Absolutely nutty numbers for them. PS3 did better as well, looks like they continue to benefit from the price drop and pent-up demand. 360's a little lower, even though they were above the PS3 last month. PSP is sucking hardcore; looks like the Go gambit actually had a negative effect.
NSMB Wii is a monster... but considering how well NSMB DS did, we probably shouldn't be that surprised. MW2 still did quite well; it's only a hair behind. And then all the other Nintendo properties... geez. Especially Mario RPG. How the bloody hell did that happen? I mean, it's a great game, but geez.
June's release of The Sims 3 bested World of Warcraft for the crown of 2009's best selling PC game, according to numbers released today by the NPD Group. Modern Warfare 2, despite a November release, was a strong fifth.
Dragon Age: Origins also saw a November release and also made the top 10, at No. 9. It was one of five games from 2009 to do so in a sector where titles have a longer sales lifespan than on consoles.
Warcraft's Wrath of the Lich King expansion was the second place finisher; the franchise's Battle Chest remained a reliable seller at No. 4, and the five-year-old original version of the game is still No. 6.
Sega's Empire: Total War, at No. 10, was the only game not published by Activision or Electronic Arts to make the top 10.
Overall, NPD reported that retail PC game revenues dropped 23 percent in 2009 from their 2008 totals. Michael Gallagher, the president of the Entertainment Software Assocation, countered that 2009 was the highest grossing sales year ever on record for the games industry.
The top 10 PC selling games of 2009 were:
1. The Sims 3
2. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Expansion Pack
3. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe

5. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
6. World of Warcraft Blizzard Entertainment
