Ya know, this doesn't look THAT bad. Wonder why it's tanking in Japan.
Because it launched the same week as Dragon Quest 6 DS, Resonance of Fate, Ar Tonelico 3, Shiren the Wanderer Wii and Tatsunoko vs Capcom?
Sounds like a good week to send your niche game to die.
Also because Hit Maker's games suck.
Yep and the funny thing is, they've sent it to die in all three territories. Its US release is 23/2 and its PAL release is 26/3, both in the middle of the minefield of big releases (and awesome small ones, like Yakuza 3). What the hell do they expect? People to hold off on all the other big budget games just so they can buy a Hit Maker game that looks worse than a number of PS2 releases?
Maybe their finances don't give them the luxury of pushing it back?

That storyboards image dump or whatever is making me stabbity. There's a Syndicate concept art piece on there, and its public existence makes me think they're not making another Syndicate game. And if that's the case, then what the hell is wrong with you EA make me another goddamned Syndicate game.
Also forget LA Noire, make that detective idea for Gunhead a noir game. I'm thinking something like Bladerunner. Meets Gunhead.

I can't think of any game that wouldn't be better by adding "meets GunHead" to the end of it.

A Gang of Daggers, some things are better left forgotten.
XBLA revenue estimated at $103 million for 2009, up 34%.
Market research firm Forecasting and Analysing Digital Entertainment (FADE) has reported that Xbox Live Arcade sales were up 34 per cent year-on-year.
FADE says that Battlefield 1943 was the most successful Arcade release, reaching 800,000 sales and generating $12.5 million in revenue. It was also reported that the average price of XBLA games "increased rapidly" during the 2009 from an average of $8.33 in 2008 to $9.12 (via CVG).
Here are the report’s estimated top titles by revenue: [revenue / average price / estimated sales]
Battlefield 1943 (EA Dice) - $12.5 million ($15.00) [~800k sales]
Castle Crashers (The Behemoth) - $7.3 million ($15.00) [~487k]
Trials HD (RedLynx, LTD) - $7.1 million ($15.00) [~473k]
Shadow Complex (Chair Entertainment / Epic Games) - $6.1 million ($14.38) [~425k]
Family Game Night (Hasbro) - $4.2 million ($9.53) [~440k]
Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Capcom) - $4.2 million ($15.00) [~280k]
Magic: The Gathering (Stainless Games) - $2.8 million ($10.00) [~280k]
Worms 2 (Team 17) - $1.8 million ($10.00) [~180k]
Peggle (PopCap Games) - $1.8 million ($8.86) [~203k]
Turtles in Time: Reshelled (Ubisoft Singapore) - $1.7 million ($10.00) [~170k]
Do the factor in sales made when the prices are reduced? Selling Peggle for 400 points was just cruel.
They don't get into the methodology but seeing average prices of $14.38, $9.53, and $8.86 makes me think they are factoring in X sales at price Y and Z sales at price K.
Also these FADE guys say they're tracking and publishing monthly reports of WiiWare, VC, Steam and iPhone sales (not PSN yet) so perhaps we'll start seeing more on this front.
For those who can't access the Wall Street Journal article,
Sony has reduced the amount it loses on each PS3 sold to $18, according to a Wall Street Journal article.
Sony has again significantly reduced the amount it costs to make a PS3, bringing the loss-per-console down to $18 from an estimated $37 per unit in December last year.
The company is now estimating it will actually turn a profit on the hardware in 2011.
“We think we’ve bottomed out and we can do fairly well going forward,” said Sony Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda.
Sony’s drive for the black appears to be working, with the firm’s three months ending December 31 showing 146.1 billion yen group operating profit.
PS3 sales are on the up, and closing on 360’s: the Sony console now stands at 33.5 million worldwide, compared to Xbox 360’s 39 million.
Not bad. That plus game sales should mean they should start turning a small profit on the PS3 that probably will never make up for the losses.
Has Sony been posting a loss with the PS3 line factoring in platform licensing/3rd party agreements, 1st party sales revenue, and whatever their online network is called? I'm a PC gamer so I don't really follow any of this stuff, but if they took a 1.2 billion hit to get 33 million consoles out there, it doesn't seem like an insurmountable problem, esp. as Sony will have structured at least some of that 1.2 billion in losses a tax write-off.
I also wonder in a broader corporate sense if the PS3, which secured Blu-ray's victory in the format wars, didn't win sony lots of 3rd-party licensing fees. so it's hard to truly value the costs and benefits of platform development. i think in a broad sense Sony will "make money" from the PS3 program but I have no idea of what its development costs are. i think it's clear it won't be as profitable as its earlier consoles.

hmmm. I wonder what sony's next "gimmick" is going to be for the ps4. and by gimmick I really don't mean gimmick, i just can't think of the right word. what i mean is they used DVD to try to shoehorn the ps2 into homes and it worked. they did the same for the ps3 and blu-ray and it kinda worked (well, it did help kill HDDVD). Will they try something similar with the ps4? they obviously can't try to push a new media format so soon but maybe they'll try to use something else as a dangling carrot for consumers. Arc? *shrugs*

No physical drive and a proprietary video format for your downloads instead.

Streaming Media / Streaming Games. The market is just about right for it. Sony could give away their movies and heavily play up Hulu/Netflix/Gamefly integration.
It will also, of course, have waggle. I think it'll be too late (it'll be trivial for Nintendo to catch up with graphics, not so trivial for MS/Sony to overcome the perception of "stealing" Nintendo's idea) but, we'll see.

Streaming Games with Waggle wouldn't work, would it? I'd imagine there'd just be too much lag coming from both sides. Unless I'm misinterpreting what you mean.
The next 'gimmick' will probably just be continued support/heavier integration of 3D technology. (See: their claims that the PS3 will have a 3D games kind of firmware update eventually, would just make sense to think the PS4 will have it out of the box unless they step it down before then) Sony was pretty much the first big one to come out about it a while ago, weren't they? At least, I remember them bringing it up, since I remember the "3D won't work" debate it sparked.

the issue I have with that is that the mass market is dumb. the 360 is this gen's crowning hardcore system that's loaded to the brim with features and while they're doing pretty well, using various extended multimedia functions as a selling point will never land you an installed base akin to the ps2 or ps1 or even the wii. When it came to dvd/blu-ray, the incentive to go with a sony product was clear from the very beginning and incredibly easy to explain. Moving away from disc-based games is also something most people would likely be confused about. While all of those things might very well be compelling features and provide incentive for hardcore gamers to pony up the cash for the next consoles, sony and microsoft would probably rather try to land the extended audience, the ps2/ps1/wii gamers that break records and crown kings.
If you're stringing it together with DVD to Blu-Ray, then the next step is integrated DVR support a la the PSX. It's already clear that the future of gaming, like it or not, is digital distribution. Guessing that and expecting to be right only means you think you're Michael Pachter.
No, 360 will probably end somewhere in between PS2 and PSX in final lifetime install base as long as they don't introduce a new system in the next year and drop the 360 like a rock.
Don't forget, 10 year plan. There won't be a PS4 in 2011/12, I mean that'd just be
Oh god, I can't even finish typing that with a straight face.
o_O You actually think there's going to be new systems in 2011/12? Good luck with that. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are pretty comfy with this generation and they've shown no signs of announcing new consoles anytime soon.
Also, streaming games is a great idea to hype up the media/internet but with current technology, it's an impossibility. Unless of course you love input lag, then it'll be amazing.

God, why would anyone wish a new generation on us? We're only just getting into the thickest crop of big, quality games which start to push the systems.

Wait, what? The 360's first 4 years scored them 39 million units sold, you really think they're going to be able to make it over 100 million? I'm all for a really long generation but I don't think it'll last that long.

I could see the first next generation console releasing for Christmas 2012, with the last major 360 and PS3 games releasing in the run-up to Christmas 2013. That would mean we still have about 3.5 years left in the current generation.
I have no idea what to expect from Nintendo. I don't know if they'll try to ride the Wii for another three years, or if they'll try to get a jump on the competition and launch something new in 2011 already.

Maybe he means the actual PSX and not the fan name given to the PS1?
In which case, the 360 has already reached the 'target'.

‘Mass Effect 2’ tops an unchanged Top 3 this week, despite a sales drop of 64% putting it within touching distance of ‘Just Dance’ (-26%) at No2.
Ubisoft’s dancing game was only 850 sales away from regaining No1, but still remains ahead of ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’ (-12%) which just holds on to No3 in the face of competition from EA’s new release ‘Dante’s Inferno’, debuting at No4. EA’s new IP is only a tiny number of sales away from dislodging ‘Call of Duty’ at No3, but EA can claim 3 games in the Top 5 as ‘FIFA 10’ (+26%) jumps 2 places to No5. The rest of the All Formats Top 10 shuffle places amongst themselves with Nintendo’s highest charting title ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-18%) down one place to No6, ahead of Sony’s PS3-exclusive ‘MAG’ (-46%) down 3 places to No7, in its second week of release. Nintendo still manage 3 games in the Top 10 as ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-14%) holds on to No8 while ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-36%) shows signs of flagging, down 3 places to No9. ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-12%) rounds off the Top 10, a non-mover at No10 with ‘FIFA 10’ the only Top 10 game to gain sales this week.
Atari/Namco Bandai Games fail to break into the Top 10 as ‘Star Trek Online’ beams in at No11, ahead of new releases from THQ with ‘MX Vs ATV Reflex’ at No18 and EA with the latest Sims add-on ‘The Sims 3: Design & High Tech Stuff’ at No20.

Last Friday, Nippon Ichi Software, the developer behind the Disgaea series, announced its financial earnings. They were not good.
As Kotaku previously reported, the operating profit for the Gifu Prefecture-based company is down 97.5 percent during the first nine months of this financial year.
The company's closing price on the JASDAQ (Japanese NASDAQ) was ¥36,200 on Friday. When the market opened this morning, and investors began reacting to Nippon Ichi's financial statement, the stock price ultimately dropped ¥7,000 (US$78) as the stock was unloaded. With the stock's value dropping almost 20 percent, the JASDAQ put a freeze on the price so it could not slide any further south.
Apple bought Sega and EA. Rumor has it they're going to announce a new console soon.
Seriously though, Xbox Live service for Xbox 1 games is getting shut down, people are reporting terrible earnings, and Sega announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for Xbox Live Arcade, Playstation Network and Wiiware, with a rumored Iphone version in development as well.

I just got a PS3 on Sunday.
It's...it's so quiet.
Also, after now seeing the difference between PSN/Live's marketplaces. I like the PSN model a bit more. Live is well, lively but the PSN doesn't distract as much for downloads and viewing. They curnch a lot more data and I don't feel like I'm diving through a gagillion screens to find something. Pixel Junk's games are making my purchase of a PS3 quite worth it.

Yea, I just don't see a new hardware generation anytime soon. All three companies seem to be ok where they are in the stream of things. Personally I can't afford a new generation, so I'm happy to keep it where we are. :P
Nintendo is the only one right now that I feel may throw out another console in the near future.
Oh and Unco, you're correct...I was mixing up LA Noir and Agent. My goof, Agent is still exclusive. :P
Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega, Konami, THQ, Square Enix and maybe a couple of others made profits.
An analyst predicted Darksiders sold poorly a few days before THQ's financial report. It sold 1.2 million. They confirmed Saints Row, Red Faction and Darksiders sequels are coming.
You know that idiot that filed lawsuits against Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo? He dropped them because of his 'condition' or something.
The Wii HD is rumoured to be announced at GDC next month. Chances are it won't happen.
Microsoft's X10 is happening in a couple of days. Get your disappointment hat on!
The Conduit dev's next FPS is on PS3/360/Wii. Apparently they're under the false impression that their games are actually good.
Kitase (FF producer) thinks towns are too hard to make in HD JRPG's, that's why FFXIII doesn't have any. All this despite the fact that FF Versus XIII (Nomura's one) has both an overworld (world map) and towns.
EA concept art from cancelled projects leaked, including a Syndicate sequel (probably unrelated to Starbreeze's current project) and a project called Gunhead. Apparently Gunhead has been babied by someone high up at EA, so they've approached a lot of developers over the last 4 or so years to work on it.
Dante's Inferno is meant to be terrible, no surprise. Starts off decently but falls off a cliff a couple of hours into it.
The Fallout: New Vegas teaser came out. All pre-rendered but the setting looks awesome.
Oh and after 7 years in development (and probably $60 million), LA Noire's finally meant to be shown soon.
So how was Rooks? Did you enjoy your private retreat together?
Edit:
Brainiac: LA Noire has an 'e' at the end because of a... spelling mistake... :P
You know, as much shit as we've given Sony for dragging out that 10 year plan thing, the PS3 really looks like it WILL be out for 10 years.
It's just that all the other consoles will too.
Meanwhile, EA's got more plans for that Facebook site you may have heard about.
Gamers will soon be able to experience Madden in a whole new way. EA Sports president Peter Moore confirmed to Bloomberg the long-standing football series will appear on popular social networking website Facebook.
"We have to make 'Madden' more accessible," Moore said. "You'll see us on Facebook going forward." While an official announcement and release date were not given, the move to Facebook will give players a "simpler experience" compared to the console counterparts, Moore added.
According to the latest NPD data, the Madden series has gone on to sell 63 million copies in the U.S. alone.
Last November, Electronic Arts acquired known Facebook games developer Playfish in a deal upwards of $300 million dollars. The company hopes to reach the platform's 400 million users with both new and familiar titles of its existing franchises.

Also forget LA Noire, make that detective idea for Gunhead a noir game. I'm thinking something like Bladerunner. Meets Gunhead.
That seems like it might have been cool
I can't think of any game that wouldn't be better by adding "meets GunHead" to the end of it.
Like A Gang Of Daggers.. meets Gunhead.
Yup, you're right.
XBLA revenue estimated at $103 million for 2009, up 34%.
It's also criminal that Splosion Man isn't on that list.

Also it's looking like I made the correct decision in ignoring that whole Gang of Daggers thing. I literally know nothing about it.
It is so fucking amazing, seriously. And you get a ton of content for the money you spend
I only skimmed through it after the fact. It's better for the reactions. Still, you should stay away.
Oh god, I can't even finish typing that with a straight face.
And we don't want that, right?
o_O You actually think there's going to be new systems in 2011/12?

Well, there's one console the majority don't have any trouble turning a profit on, but they've inexplicably decided not to make games for it.
I'm back.
But jetlagged to hell.
Any exciting news?
(Please do not gift. My game bank is already full.)
Also Blaster Master re-imagining for Wiiware was announced and released like two days apart.
Nintendo Network ID - Brainiac_8
PSN - Brainiac_8

Add me!
I can't remember when you left, so I'll just round up all the stuff I can remember.
So how was Rooks? Did you enjoy your private retreat together?
Edit:
Brainiac: LA Noire has an 'e' at the end because of a... spelling mistake... :P
It's just that all the other consoles will too.
Meanwhile, EA's got more plans for that Facebook site you may have heard about.
