I wish the Systems in the patrol missions were 50% combat and 50% non-combat. Those parts where you beam down to a planet to scan some pods, or mediate a dispute between two brothers are a very nice change of pace and having some more of them would break up the monotony of "destroy X squadrons."

A little while back in CB they said they were planning on making them like that. Ostensibly there's a ton of patrol missions to redo, so I imagine it'll take some time to do, if they do it before release.
Actually those pics reminded me of the secret world stuff that funcom are developing
I actually thought that too, until I saw the pictures of the old-timey explorers finding some ancient lost city in the jungle. Along with the picture of the african safari explorers fleeing through the desert with stolen loot from a tomb while evading a giant skeleton monster.
Then all I could hear was the Indiana Jones theme song.
Oh boy, I hit level 11! And bought an Escort ship. And am very disappointed. In theory the speed would be nice for dodging torpedoes and such but the game isn't really set up for that, so I'm not sure what the point is. Cannons are neat I guess.
So the manual claims "Adding power to engines increases your top speed. The faster you are moving the harder you are to hit." Do you notice anything missing you in an escort? I've occasionally seen "missed" messages flash above enemy targets in place of the combat damage floating numbers, but I've never seen them over myself, so I'm not sure if that represents missed beams, missed torpedoes, or what.
Playing Klingons, the NPC fighters, runabouts, and shuttles are pretty dang hard to hit. Other than that, I rarely see miss messages.
Also, as a general rule of thumb for escort ships, and DPS oriented tier 1 ships, ditch whatever you have in the aft weapon slots, and put a turret in there. That gives you yet another forward-facing weapon system, which will mean you out-gun pretty much every other NPC ship in the game up until late tier 3.
Playing PvP, I've found it useful to have rear photon launcher. As the enemy player tries to point his failed shield away, I full speed right over them and then drop a high yield torpedo right into the weak shield as I fly away.
Ok but I demand some kind of squad mechanic like in STO so I can have Brian blessed and some annoying little child that squeaks out my name every few minutes.
Actually, all of those concept art pictures look like they'd make for an incredibly badass game. It looks like they're wanting to make a game that combines Lovecraft with Indiana Jones.
Dear god that sounds cool. But then again I get excited about any MMO that isn't the same old fantasy crap.
An MMO about treasure hunting archaeologists? Let me see-
Man, I love the combat and feel of this game. I really hope they squash a lot of the bugs and keep the content rolling because I don't want to have to not buy it.
Anyone play Pirates of the Burning Sea? This game plays exactly like that game should have... faster paced, not as pvp-centric...

Seriously?! I loved PotBS, I was in the beta, enjoyed it... When there weren't the game breaking bugs that totally fucked my over sideways. I KNOW pirates of the burning sea would have been so much better if they pushed the release date back a few months, and fixed some of the major issues.
E: Also, looking at the concept art, I agree, although the whole innsmouth concept art photo REALLY intrigued me. I'm not exactly a huge Cthulhu buff, but I know a bit about it and played some of the games. And if they choose to make an rpg from the cthulhu mythos, (god knows there enough lore for it). Sweet Jesus Mary mother of God. That will be epic.

Okay.. I guess I should've figured, what with the war and all, but the neutral zone is between the klingons and the feds, not the romulans and the feds? Weird.
Also, at the very north-east of the playable space there is this green line.. I figured that was the neutral zone, but couldn't get in it.
Judging from CO, I fear the game will not end well
What happened with CO? I know pretty much nothing about the game.
A bit of a rocky launch thanks to some last-minute difficulty tweaks that took the game from ridiculously easy (people were hitting level cap in a week) to frustrating (well, frustrating for a modern MMO. Nothing compared to FF11). They fixed it fairly soon, and the game's improved considerably since.
Honestly, for me the only thing that CO (and CoX) demonstrate about Cryptic's MMOs is that they make fun games that could use a few more months in testing and patching before release. Which isn't really all that unique to the genre; at least unlike some other games they're not rendered unplayable for weeks at a time due to overloaded servers or sub-alpha stability.
To clarify this: I wasn't playing CO when it launched. I just recently got a trial and found the game to be... well, better in some ways than CoX but worse in others. Horrible engine. Few players as far as I could see. No reason to group, ever.
The engine and grouping troubles also plague STO.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
I just watched the Giant Bomb "Phasers on Fun" preview. This game totally snuck up on me, I had no idea it was coming out so soon. I'm going to give it a shot.
That's it. I watched all 3 parts, back to back, nonstop. When you can watch someone else play an MMO for nearly 3 hours straight without ever losing interest - that's a very good sign.

Yeah, I was in the beta and enjoyed it too, and I actually resubscribed a few months ago. Love the game in theory, but it's just so slow paced, and the economy is crap since it's all player-based and yet there aren't enough players to make anything -_-
STO feels like faster-paced Pirates... IN SPACE! You can actually move quickly when out of combat, and in combat it doesn't take 5 minutes to kill one enemy, and you don't have to rely on players making your ships for you, or losing your ship when you die...
Still, there's nothing quite like annihilating someone with a broadside in PotBS =p

In the TOS period the neutral zone was between the Federation and Klingons. Due to events like Praxis, the neutral zone stopped being as big a deal there and a new one was established between the Romulans and Feds in TNG. Right now there may be one at each, but the devs haven't turned on Rumulan space yet.

I don't think there's enough left of the Romulan empire to really bother having a neutral zone over there. The beta messages say that most of the zones are locked, so I expect you'll be able to head there when they unlock the next tier.

You know what would be nice?
I mean really nice...
If the adjacent sectors + systems were drawn when you were near the border, so it felt like a continuous landscape. I don't care if each area is sharded, and you get the message about shifting shards when you cross a border.. but right now it feels like the CoX walls, which suck after playing WoW.

Still, I really wished they'd worked on the ground combat a bit more. As well as exploration. I love games where I can literally stay away from missions, or stick to a certain level friendly zone and explore different planets/continents. Mass Effect did this pretty well. You had the galaxy map, and you could go to the different systems, and in each system, you could land of different planets and explore them. I LOVED that in Mass Effect. So much so I literally spent the first four of five hours of my play time (after getting your ship) just exploring EVERY planet I could.
However, while it totally could have worked in PotBS, they really didn't work it out. Another game did something like that, theres some korean mmo named Voyage Century which allowed you to literally level up through exploring. You'd sail around the map (its a sailing game). And occasionally, you'd either find a way point, or a place you can dock, with the waypoints, you sail up to it, enter 'exploration mode', and a little telescope would pop above your ship, and you'd gain experience and a codex entry. With the docking, you could explore the place. It wasn't instanced, so you could see other players, and if someone got there first and the loot didn't respawn yet, well, your SoL.
It worked REALLY well, but, it was a korean mmo, and grind filled, so I didn't really play it a lot... And what I was trying to get at is that... Does STO allow you to land on random planets and explore them? Or has there been any talks to adding that into the game? Or is it you can only land on certain planets, and then ones that are made for the missions.
I appeared back in space....as my character and not as the ship.
It's the weirdest bug. During CB, there was nothing like this bug. All reports are that this and the missing officers are associated with their capacity issues and will be addressed when they get more iron racked. I hope this can be fixed by next weekend, because I basically gave up on testing when I got totally stuck with this and went to watch Fringe, play other games. It's hard to test the other features of their game when this remains a show-stopper. (And, yes.... I'm in it actually for the testing. I've already done all my "previewing" made my buying decision and want to get the bugs before go-live.)

Try going into the Delta Volanis region. It seems to be mostly random non-combat missions or when there is combat in the region it's not related to the wider war. Some of them are a bit buggy though.
So when you preorder through amazon, do they just email your open beta key or what? I have only received the order confirmation mail as of yet, and I would prefer to try this beta out before making a final decision on the game.
Edit: Nevermind. I suppose it pays to read the fine print. Guess I will be trying this out in a couple days.
OK, I just hit Lt. Cmdr. This guy is a Tac officer, so what type of ship would I take the most advantage of? The obvious answer is Tactical, but people have been finding synergies with other types of ships.

Hmm, playing as Klingons, there's been a few federation fleets that have been spamming the mines. Once you get more than a few fields out there, it annoying as hell. They can see through your cloak, plus targeting is a bitch with that much garbage on the screen.
There's definitely a place for mines, and that place is the deepest, darkest circle of Hell.
