You lose crew when you do anything. You lose crew by launching from fucking space dock. Besides, crew are almost always back by the time you get to wherever you died.
There is essentially no death penalty, and that's not a bad thing.
Those are injured crew.
Dead crew have to be replaced at a starbase. I think.

AFAIK dead crew replenish out of combat. Unless this changes in the full release.
Wow, I like the Trident. That's not really what I think when I think "Star Trek ship," but I like the look.
Of course, I'm still in my starter ship, so what do I know.

Then why do starbases [strike]sell[/strike] provide crew? Unless the regen is really slow.

I guess I skipped the crew vendor. How much for 50 red shirts? :P
Okay so Tier 5 ships ahead, I put them in a spoiler and as thumbnails because otherwise it would be 5 megs of ships. Sorry about the resolution but I don't know of a site that don't downsize, if anyone know of one that don't and allow mass upload I will re-upload then there.

1 Merit = 1 Crewman.
I'm not sure I like that pricing, it could get prohibitive unless dead crew are rare.
...Where does it say that? I don't doubt you, I just have noticed that Cryptic is habitually far from explicit when it comes to describing some pretty important shit.
From what little info I found (official site is blocked at work... meh), it seems the crew loss penalty isn't active in the beta, but will be in the full release.

The Cerberus and the Phoenix both use the same thumbnail and link to the same picture still.
Go back to his first post.
He cant edit someone another poster's quote, which is what you linked.
Ah, you're right, there was, like, one additional line added by the other poster so at a glance it looked like the post above it.

Last night in game we decided there needs to be some type of Life Reward for staying alive longer, rather than a death penalty. Some spiffy title, or some merits, or a unique items of some type. Nothing balance changing, just some neat thing to show off that you are good at not dieing.

Launching from starbases tends to, more often than not, leave me with 75-90% grey crew. Why? Because this game was made in a year.
Every time you want to leave, some of the crew have to get out and push so you can jumpstart the ship. The exertion leaves you with a good 10% of the crew with a thrown out back.
You should turn on your inertial dampners/seatbelts. They're dying because they're turning into tomato sauce on the aft walls.
my brother keeps saying that I should stop installing C4 in all the ship's consoles. I say I like the exploding effect they make whenever I take a hit from some kid with a blowgun. It's always fun when I'm down to 2 crew, with all the rest dead/gray/red paste on the wall, on a cruiser with a "starting total" of 400.
I feel like a nub in my starter ship, but when I tried to customize my ship last night, I'd hit "save" and nothing happened. I wonder if I'm misunderstanding something about this process.
Of course, I only have about 600 spacebux, so I can't really buy much yet. Oh well.
Soon my level 4 captain will guide the USS Belafonte atop a throne of Orion and Klingon skulls in the center of the command deck.

Should I rename my guy to Lt. Zissou?
It costs about 1000 spacebux to customize your ship. You get a free customization with each ship, but that doesn't include changing your bridge type.
Hey, I got no problem with that , gives you a reason not fuck about , well, you know, outside of usual pvp fuckery.
Im laughing like crazy right now because I just got my preorder code and started patching, but the beta is over. Also, I noticed that when I went to the star trek online forums to find out where to put in the code that all I saw was a wall of screaming death threats about how the game sucks and is going to explode and die right this goddamned second, any truth to that?

Not much truth, but there is some. Most, but not all of the screaming can be broken down into into one of these categories:
1. STO does not have [some feature that is impractical in a MMO], so I'm quitting!
2. STO does not have [some esoteric feature that only a small handful would want], so I'm quitting!
3. STO is not Trek enough because [poster's favorite ship] does not wtfpwn stuff like on the show! I'm quitting!
4. Wait, I have to pay to play? That's bullshit! I'm quitting! (haven't seen too many of these, thank god)
The more legitimate gripes involve the lack of content and polish that are becoming Cryptic's trademark style, quality-of-life issues (autofire, forced BO replacement, etc.), and some annoying bugs.

I think you're discounting the negative influence that shore leave will have on a crew. Everytime the Enterprise-D traveled within transporter range of Risa, Cmdr. Riker ended up passing Space Aids on to the sluttier 15% of the female crew.
In all seriousness, I'm so conflicted about this game. It's built around the nucleus of a really cool idea -- I like the dynamic sort of fighting, beats the hell out of mana management in other MMOs -- but it's about 70% realized. The only thing I'm sure of at this point is that I'm glad I got to CB test it because I'd feel mighty frustrated if I'd already dropped the money to purchase an early copy and a OB key.

And these prevent me from actually shelling out any money for that game. Beta is coming to a close and today I couldn't muster up enough energy to actually play the game. I am kind of a big Star Trek Fan and to see what they have done with the IP and the as yet unused potential of the IP they wasted away is just dissappointing.
So for now I will wait a few month to see where they go from here. They actually should keep up this intense bugfixing and patching they have done for the past few days ... keep it up for at least 6 month, than it might have the polish and finish it needs ...

It is the reason every single person I played with is not picking this up. It is instanced like Guild Wars. Guild Wars was free to play. I know this may seem silly, but the fact that it is silly is a sad reality of what MMORPGs have become.
I really don't understand why everybody is approaching this game as though it was some kind of lifetime commitment, over-analyzing every aspect. It doesn't have to be picture perfect to be fun!
I played the Beta up to about Commander rank 5 and then called it at that point, not wanting to spoil all the quests and whatnot later on in the game. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw in those levels. Ground combat was tactical and interesting, space combat was a blast, and the missions were varied enough to not feel grindy. The character editor was fantastic and the ships left a lot of room for personal playstyles (until the inevitable min-maxing comes into play).
There were some things that annoyed me, true. The game doesn't feel one tenth as polished as WoW, certainly not as well balanced. I'm not at all happy about the skill fuckery they seem to be doing, or the idea that I can't keep the boffs I created if I want to remain competitive at end game. This is the kind of shit that should have been worked out in the fucking design document before they started work on the game, not a week from launch.
But there's a lot to explore and see before the crappy balance begins to really irritate me. I'm perfectly willing to give them the pre-order cash and play for the free month. That's at least as much entertainment as I'd get for the same price on another game. If they get their heads out of their asses re: skill points and balance, so much the better.
P.S. They'd really better not slow down the ground combat though, that's one serious mistake. It actually felt dangerous when Klingons could destroy your ass in a few shots. If it turns into a "Chip away the health bar" grind it would suck the fun right out of that half of the game.

Just because its instanced doesn't mean it doesn't take a good deal of money to run.

Well I haven't played an online game since Pirates of the Burning sea back when that came out, and after screwing around with star trek online for like two hours I think I can safely say I just don't give a fuck about them anymore.

I fly to Sol, beam them to Reno, and then kill them just to watch them die.

They better make boarding parties fucking useful.

I guess crew resistance SC consoles are going to be useful after all

Yeah. But you know how MMOs go... constant work in progress, especially at the beginning.
I just hope Cryptic doesn't do server updates during prime time like they did in the beta.
Rear admiral sounds right...
Which ones are dead? I've hit black lined crew quite a bit. Orange is pretty normal when getting hit by certain weapon types.

More than that, and on a pre-existing engine.

I'm not buying it because it's an MMO, I guess that would technically fit under this category.
So yeah, I just lost my del taco shuttle and no way to replace it.
stupid cryptic.
Probably too late, but Cryptic support was changing names for people that didn't realize that their @handle and login shouldn't be the same.
