It is the reason every single person I played with is not picking this up. It is instanced like Guild Wars. Guild Wars was free to play. I know this may seem silly, but the fact that it is silly is a sad reality of what MMORPGs have become.
Just because its instanced doesn't mean it doesn't take a good deal of money to run.
Very true and I can respect that. I was just spoiled with Guild Wars being that it was free to play after the box price. I wonder what was so different about the Guild Wars approach. You still had tons of people connecting to their servers simultaneously. On the outside, it looks the same. I would assume the insides to be different in this case.
I haven't really played in the last few days. I was enjoying the game immensely, but I'm also a realist and I know that it has a lot of problems still. Rather than becoming aggravated and jaded by the beta, I've just kind of quit playing until the head-start begins. No point in getting burned out before the game even hits the shelves.

Welp. I selected to go to my bridge, and then got server not responding. Now I can't get back in game, because I get dumped to the login every time I select my character.

Wait 5 minutes or go on another character for a while.

This is the approach I'm taking as well. I really do hope they have some plans for the game as a whole, as lately the approach they've taken seems to be one of correcting individual problems while ignoring the massive ones. But who knows, maybe they've got it straightened out and it's just their communication that sucks. I cannot believe that no developers have at least tried to head off the shit storm on their forums about skill points, even a little indication that they have a plan in place would calm a lot of it. Oh well, the game's fun enough to give them the benefit of the doubt and just enjoy pew-pewing mans for the time being.
Is there any point to customizing your uniform/ship/bridge other than asthetic?
If not, then screw that....I really could give a rats ass if my ship looks just like other players. It almost gets to a point where you're unique if you DONT customize your ship.
So guys I took a screenshot as we were all admiring NATIK's ships last night, and I caught this other ship that was chillin' nearby and I'm really curious what it is. It's mean lookin'.
If you saw it near me it was probably flown by my fellow Admiral Kiala. Cool dude/dudette, had loads of fun blowing up people at the warp point together.

Ah, cool. For some reason it didn't even occur to me that it might be a science vessel.
EDIT: Holy crap they finally implemented a login queue.

Hmm, so I was just trying out some stuff on my Klingon character before the Beta is finally done for me. I've been flying the T2 Bird of Prey, but I thought I'd pickup the Somraw Raptor and try it out. I went and shot at some NPCs for a while, and it seems a ton tougher than the BoP. Stats only show it having 100 more shields per side, but I feel like I'm driving a tank compared to the BoP. Anyone else tried out the Raptor? I'm starting to think that it might be worth giving up the battle cloak for.
Edit: Never mind, I had messed with my power presets and forgot. Totally not worth it.

Most PvPers seem to feel that the battle cloak isn't worth the loss in durability, at least in upper tiers.
edit: There is now a subforum on the STO boards for discussing player-made modifications. I am simultaneously bewildered and excited.

Another about face on a policy with less than a week left to launch? While it wouldnt shock me, im betting its more about ship and costume customization than it is UI mods.
annnnnddd i actually look at the forum and im wrong. Wow. That seems... a little bizarre.
They're doing an end-of-beta event at 2pm tomorrow. A PVP end-of-beta event. I fully expect all of you silly geese to be there and not, you know, playing Mass Effect.
So, I spent $1 to see if I could run this game on my computer. The little preorder box doesn't actually have anything in it, though. I can't DL the whole game tonight, so...

Work this week
Open Beta is finished for me and I still can't decide whether to go Engineering or Science for my captain.

Well at least I've got a $5 off coupon?
You should be able to download and install the client then try it out in headstart still.
Will the beta key work for that, I guess? Could be worth trying out. I would think you'd need to have bought the game/paid for a month before they'd let you play.

Pre-orders will get you into the beta and into the head start, and there's a grace period of several days after launch where you can continue to play without a retail code.

Do I look like the sort of man who'd go and find unsuspecting Japanese schoolgirls in short skirts and white panties and ask them if they want to see my "Cthulu Special"?
I just tried to do one of the resource battles and it seems like its still bugged. Me and this other dude had scanned one item apiece. Then the zone objective list disappeared and all of the sensors that we were supposed to scan despawned. Then after like 2 minutes it all came back but the counter was back at 0.
It's time limited I think, the idea being that the Klingon objective is to kill the feds enough that it slows them down too much. You just came in late in a round. You can complete all of the objectives, get a message saying you were successful, and still not get any credit for though so it's still broken. Also there's a bug that lets you complete the scanning objective super fast.
My Klingon character is level 10.8. I only have 2 bubbles till I reach the next tier of ship. But I've been sick the last few days and I feel like crap. After that resource battle I logged
I had been planning on reaching 11 today on him, but I just don't have the will to play. I feel like shit. I hope I'm feeling better by Friday, or I'll be behind on the head-start.
So uh... I've been quietly lurking in this thread, reading everyone's posts, and I have to admit I'm excited for this game. I'm not the biggest Star Trek fan, but I do like it. Is this game worth picking up? How would you rate this game as far as fun, bugginess/lagginess or lack thereof, and longevity of play? (i.e., if I buy it am I going to want to play it for the next few months?)
I'm currently sub'd to WoW and I play 1-2 nights a week for 30 minutes to an hour. I could probably play more but I'm a little burned out. I was actually expecting the new Star Wars MMO to come out this spring, so I figured that would be my next game, but now that it's coming out next spring I'm looking for another game... is this one the one?

This is the one. I've been subbed to WoW since open Beta, and fully expected the last remnants of my guild to fall to Star Wars. My husband and I have been playing the STO beta, and while it's got its issues (because it's Beta, for the most part), it's been a real joy. Even in 30 minutes to an hour, I can feel like I've accomplished something, and our experience in Beta has been that even when he's 10 levels higher than I am (I haven't had as much playtime) he can still come and group with me and we can have fun questing together. Oh, and that guild I mentioned? Our guild leader and a couple of others are playing in the Beta also, lamenting that they don't have it in their budget to buy the lifetime subscription to STO. They may migrate to SW when it premiers, but for now I suspect that STO is going to be their home in a few days.
It's a decent casual game. There's not hell of a lot of content, so it's not going to keep you busy for months, but if you are going to be playing on some weeknights/weekends, it's going to be fine. It's currently "fluxy", the way Champions was right before go-live, so people are whining, but unless you're gonna get obsessed like NATIK and race to the top, things like the added skill cap aren't really going to affect you.

Thats what I was doing. They can change the @name, but not the username/login.
Hence the new account and loss of a shuttle pet.

Enlist in Star Citizen! Citizenship must be earned!
No, it's completely for aesthetics.

It's like a really TNGed Oberth
Personally I think they look a bit like Star Wars Imperial Star Destroyers.
Look at it closer. It's a "Saucer" section with nacelles attached directly to it. Then there is a secondary hull hanging underneath.
Edit: Never mind, I had messed with my power presets and forgot. Totally not worth it.
