I would not recommend going to the official forums. It is filled with two large majorities who are at war with each other. The die hard Trekkies and the Haters. The official forums are not a pretty place.

If you look at that image you can see those power stats. Top one is Weapons which are at 55/100 because I just dropped out of Full Impulse moments before (my weapons went to 125/100 which is the absolute max they can go to), next one is shields at 55/100 again I just dropped out of Impulse, they go to 71/50 for me, next up is Engines at 29/25 and last up is Aux at 34/25.

Weapon power governs damage output at 125 power you do max damage, at 0 you can't even fire.

Shield power governs shield regen, at 125 you regen at max rate, below 50 you have no combat regen and at 0 your shields drop.

Engine power governs engine speed, again 125 max speed and 0 you can't move.

Aux power makes things like Tractor beams and many other sciency things more powerful, a 125 tractor is gonna make your enemy totally unable to move where as a 0 power tractor beam is going to do nothing at all, as example.

Yeah, see I knew that stuff. I just did not realize that shooting a weapon actually caused your power to fluctuate. With exactly 1 fore gun and 1 aft gun, I was always just waiting for the auto-fire cooldowns. I'm assuming that more guns in the fore position would cause you to drain more power from weapons or something?

Well, you'd be hard pressed to notice with just two energy weapons. The first one is free, but any other one which fires during the first's firing cycle will drain 10 power from weapons.

So if a person has 10 fore phaser arrays and presses the spacebar, they will be at 0% power?

What's the point of having more than say...3 phasers on front or back? More than that would be too hard to manage.

Well that's when you throw EPS conduits on there. Also I have totally managed to have 6 weapons firing at once on my Escorts without even needing EPS conduits.

EDIT: 3x Heavy Cannons + 3x Turrets (last fore slot being a torp). But yes, having 4xbeams 4xbeams you're gonna need EPS conduits.

I'm surprised there are still die-hard Trekkies around in the world. There hasn't been a good new trek show to pull in fresh fanbois in like over a decade, and I would have guessed the people who grew up with the shows would be too old for rabid fanboi attitudes by now.

But I guess I overestimate the potential maturity of human beings.

It's my opinion that you shouldn't get lifetime and be max level and done with the game in 3 months or less. Since I pay $60 for MW2 and play that less than a month, I feel that STO is still worth a purchase even if you don't subscribe for long.

    about skills, check this out:
    http://sto-builder.binarybit.ch/index.php?s=1_7777c9i2d77c9e777e5056c22544466e744999999909p44c9f6r

that's a max level character using all his skill points. notice the last tier. there's enough points to get 16 points into t5 skills. max one (lvl 9), and another to level 7. or 4 skills level 4. so out of 19 skills, you can only max 1, or max none and dabble in 4 or 5 of them at most. and one of those skills is probably going to be what ship you pick.

then notice to have a nice skill build you can't put any points in previous tier ships. so that's 6 useless skills.

    note about engineering skills:
the x to efficiency skills raise power levels a lot when set to 25, and nada at 60+. the x systems performance raise power levels no matter what you're set at.

Cannons get a bit of a break on the energy thing because their firing cycles are super short.

To be honest, you'd be hard pressed to find a good rationale for 8 beams, but you can still manage that many well enough.

We won't know how the final skill system will work until tomorrow. I'm guessing that they'll rework things a bit to allow for a capped system to function better. Just removing the forced points spending (to rank up) would go a long way toward that, since you can save tons of points by only skilling up to 6-8 on a lot of things (the last 1-2 ranks give only a tiny additional bonus).

So I just picked up the DDE from Steam...

I want to cheat and add the WoK uniforms code onto my account, but I cant figure out where to do that on the STO Accounts page. I did manage to register for the Pre-Order, but I cant find a button to register anything else.

EDIT: Also, are the Borg bonuses still extremely valuable late game? Or do the other races catch up? I still want a mostly vanilla crew, I'm just curious about how much I'm missing out on.

Also also.. I'm really looking forward to doing headstart with everyone tomorrow.

For the science officer ability "Sensor Sweep" is there any way to extend the range of this? In my experience (at level 13) the range is only about 2.5 Km circular radius. 2.5 Km is nothing. You have to be right up your enemy's ass to even hit them with it.

For PvP this seems nearly worthless, since your enemies will almost always be keeping a distance of 10+ Km until they are ready to strike.

You should be able to enter your code here. The Borg bonuses are not that special, and you're really not missing out on anything (unless you absolutely have to have a bridge officer/captain with Borg implants).

Actually, on land the borg get +10% regeneration rate of shield and health, and in space they get +5 Starship Shield Efficiency, +5 Starship Engine Efficiency, +5 Starship Energy Weapon Efficiency, +5 Starship Auxiliary Systems Efficiency, that's the main reason I went lifetime... If I'm going in, I'm going in full thorttle, that outta keep the Klingons off my back...

I also have the ability to get more characters... Over time I want to try and get a Tactical, and Engineering officers in the Federation and the same as Klingons, I'm sure I'll throw in a Federation science officer too, but I'm starting with tactical and Engineering... Just can't decide which first, I'm leaning towards engineer, but I did enjoy tactical that last time....

Update about stuff on the main website:

    http://startrekonline.com/upcoming_content
Just because we're about to launch Star Trek Online doesn't mean we don't have some great updates ready for you in the coming weeks. From endgame raid Episodes, to more PvP maps, to more Klingon content, no matter what you love about STO we've got something you'll love even more. Here's a taste what we have planned over the next two months. And just in case you were wondering, everything listed here is free!
    The Hive Mind Is Everywhere

The Borg are invading! Just in time for many of you to reach the rank of Admiral, we've got three new high-level Episodes centered around the classic Alpha Quadrant menace, the Borg. Here's what you can expect:

    * Collateral Damage - Help save civilians caught in a battle between the Borg and Undine.
    * Recovery - In this follow-up to Collateral Damage, Rescue colonists infected by the Borg virus and fight Undine determined to destroy them!
    * State of Q - Q transports you back in time to do him a special favor.
    * More to come!

In addition to our compelling scripted content, you'll be able to check out a brand new, Borg-themed Deep Space Encounter. Can you and your friends hold off the coming invasion? It won't be long until you're called upon by Starfleet to save the galaxy!

Don't forget to check out the new exploration content included in the Borg content pack, too. When you find some respite from the Collective, seek out new life and civilizations at your own pace. The universe is just waiting to be discovered.
    Raid Episodes Coming Your Way

If you're looking for a challenge, look no further than our upcoming Raid Episodes, which combine bold storytelling with our toughest five-man missions yet. These are just a few of the Raid Episodes we'll be rolling out over the coming weeks, beginning a week after launch. Raid Episodes are available to both Federation and Klingon players.

    * Infected - Investigate a federation station that Starfleet has lost contact with.
    * The Cure - A planet has been completely taken over by the Borg. Fight them for control of the planet.
    * Khitomer Accord - Travel back in time and uncover and participate in the events that led to the release of old Borg you encountered in the Tutorial Episode.
    * Into the Hive - Track down a missing Starfleet captain and come face to face with the new Borg Queen.

More Action in the Alpha Quadrant

We've got even more great additions planned for Star Trek Online. Here's just a bit of what's coming:

    * Klingon Fleet Actions - Form up with your closest friends and do battle in large engagements.
    * A New Klingon Ship - You asked for it, we made it: A Tier 2 Klingon Battle Cruiser.
    * Klingon Star Clusters - Seek out new life and civilizations ... and subjugate them! Additional PvE content for the Klingon faction.
    * Federation vs. Federation PvP - Practice against your allies before engaging your enemies.
    * New Ground Maps - We'll be adding a new Ground Assault PvP map, as well as a new ground Fleet Action.
    * More IP Locations - Check out Rura Penthe and our whole solar system, from Mercury to Pluto.

    Engage!

These updates are entirely free to Star Trek Online subscribers. To begin your Star Trek Online adventure today, visit our retail page to purchase your copy. And check out our exclusive specials page to see what great deals we're offering on subscription packages.

    We'll see you February 2, 2010!

You can see some of those features in really old trailers. The Borg Queen episode is visible for a few seconds in one of the older ones, for instance, so some of that stuff isn't really new content, just content that's been locked until now.

Going off of what you can see in the trailer, it looks like the captain they're talking about in the Borg Queen encounter
    gets Locutus'd by the Borg.

Edit: Come to think of it, that same trailer shows what's probably a liberated Borg character too. I should go back and re-watch it if I can find it tonight.

Science ships are the middle ground, they turn alright and they definitely tank better than the Escorts but less so than the Cruisers.

So the rumors I've been hearing that Science Vessels can tank better than Cruisers at T4 and T5 are overblown? I'm planning to go Cruiser either way, because hey it was good enough for Kirk and Picard, but I will be sad if Science Vessels can not only fly rings around me, but also hold up better under heavy fire.

My impression from my beta experience to date is that it will be a fine game when it goes free to play/ cash shop and the client is free to download.

Definitely not worth a 50$ box and subscription fee. I can however see the appeal if you are a die hard trek fan. It seems to cater to the Trek Fan looking for a game rather than a seasoned MMO veteran looking for a new fix or in between MMO's.

Combat does not feel very tactical , whether on the ground or in space. In fact I have done whole ground missions with nothing equipped and done nothing but activate the console I needed to activate to complete the mission and just let my AI controlled away team do the work , not even issuing them commands , just to see if I made a difference in the equation... sadly the only difference was my actions just sped things along as best I could tell.

Space combat was just rotate around another ship fire phasers until that ships shields went down then aim your ship front at the other and shoot a torpedo then rinse and repeat without much variation.

This game's space combat feels like eve npc battles without the orbit button.

The good is that it is very solo friendly , very. You don't have to recruit people into helping on a fleet type mission, you just zone in and there's a fleet already there kicking ass or people zip in one by one if you're early for it , and if you join the action late you are caught up to the rest of the instance. It's not uncommon to be destroy 20 ships complete out of 40 when you zone into the mission.

The graphics are a little hyped up , I wasn't impressed , they definitely can't be considered eye popping or incredible , I wouldn't call them terrible either, the animation and particle effects are a snooze, the explosions are rendered terribly and are very anticlimactic.

I like how it's very quest based and non grindy.

They put you in cool ships without a terrible time sink or annoying grind. They let you pick one of your choosing every ten levels then let you customize the look for free, at least in beta. I easily had the money to afford a second ship of the same tier at level 11 without even trying to hoard money or really make it.

I don't see their being alot of gold farmer spam in the game because it is very easy to accumulate some money and there just isnt alot of stuff to buy.

Upgrades in the game can use a buff, I literally had components from a quest reward that gave +.01% point-zero-one percent upgrade to a stat which really didn't make me feel very rewarding , but on the otherhand I can see alot of people that aren't loot driven or may be burned out on that progression model enjoying that. In fact gear matters about as much as skill it seems , gear is pretty bad and the tactics and such are pretty bad so it equals out.

The Klingon side definitely seems more challenging than the federations, the ships are extremely squishy and the weapons much more rigid and restrictive so it's more difficult to take alot of damage and fights are alot busier , not any harder just that it seemed like they tied one hand behind your back and have you some wet newspaper for a shield. some people may call that a challenge , some people call that being gimped. I haven't spent enough time on the red side to speak definitively about klingon game play.

Character creation is pretty good but if that's important to you , there are already much cheaper games out there that do it alot better. Yeah there are some sliders you can tweak and a box you can type in your fan-fic back story but nothing that will blow your mind.

This game doesn't do anything really terrible, it's pretty hard to be harsh on it , on the other hand what it does well it does merely mediocre at best.

Personally I wont be buying it retail because the price point is way over-reaching and while I certainly can afford their most aggressive money grabbing lifetime subscription model I don't think it's worthwhile to encourage MMO studios and the industry to put out such lukewarm titles as they have in the past couple years.

Wolf 359 is where Locutus of Borg destroyed a federation fleet.

This is where Sisko's anger towards Picard comes from as his wife was killed during this attack, if I recall correctly, she was on the same ship as Sisko, Sisko and his son escaped, but the wife died.

    http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Wolf_359
Wolf 359 is most notable as the site of the first large-scale engagement between Starfleet and the Borg. In 2367, a fleet of 40 ships under the command of Admiral Hanson engaged a Borg cube commanded by Locutus at the Battle of Wolf 359. Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise-D had been assimilated by the Borg, and as Locutus, unwillingly provided them with a decisive advantage through his knowledge of Starfleet technology and tactics.
Also lost was the USS Saratoga, where then Lt. Commander Benjamin Sisko was serving. Sisko lost his wife Jennifer in the destruction of the Saratoga, and Sisko long blamed and hated Picard for his role in her death.

This is a fact from the TV series, i don't know it's purpose in the game, honestly I never hit the sector as it wasn't involved in any of the missions I ran..

At the Open Beta End event they spawned a SHIT ton of Borg in Sol Sector, there was a +39 Borg cube near there that kept owning my ship when I respawned... Not to mention the rediculous number of Borg in the spacedock.... Holy shit that was a metric ton of Borg....

I honestly haven't watched a lot of TNG. Is the whole Locutus of the Borg arc any good? How long does it last?

from a layman's point of view (taking the thread of conversation literally) it sounds like Wolf 359 is the site of some major science vessel annihilation.

    confirm or deny?
edit: informed. well, corrected. beaten? still dont know what went down at Wolf 359, which is OK dont bore... erm lore me. spoilers and all, you know.

If you're curious, look up the TNG episode "The Best of Both Worlds," or better yet watch it. It's one of the best Star Trek episodes from any series.

It's not really an arc so much as an excellent 2-parter (The Best of Both Worlds) followed by an episode dealing with the aftermath (also very good).

Watching First contact afterward is good too.

I dunno man, some of those DS9 episodes were pretty good... "In a Pale Moonlight" was a pretty badass episode as a whole...

TNG wise The Inner Light makes my wife cry every time... But yeah, Best of Both Worlds is pretty bad ass in TNG..
