Three slots seem more than enough. You've got your chance to play a tact/eng/science officer. Play the three different ship-types etc. That is if you forego Klingons. I personally think three normally with a fourth unlocking for a Klingon would be better. Sure the character creation is pretty damn robust, but I don't see myself making as many characters as I did in say, Champions Online.

Yes but I am one of those people who plays MMOs by making hordes of alts. It is as if I have a thing for eating cake with my fingers and cryptic has baked a delicious cake but will only allow me to eat it with their specially designed mittens and I'm like "yay cake" but "nooo, I can't eat it like I want to..."

I have altitis.
STO really isn't designed for alts. You can always install Mk IX equipment in your little runabout and tear shit up.

Doesn't really work that way. The amount of data we have to store for characters is insane compared to most games. Take into consideration:
Captain
Skills
Items
Inventory
Appearance
Perks
Friends
Ship
Items
Inventory
Crew Status
Name/Reg number
Appearance
Boffs
Skills
Items
Inventory
Appearance
Names
Appearance
I'm probably forgetting a lot of data, too. Now, multiply the Boffs list by eight to 10, and ships by at least five. That means an Admiral has not just the Captain avatar, but five ships and like 10 Boffs. That's 16 "character" files to store. Sixteen times three is 48. That's six times the character data that most games have to store, assuming those games have eight character slots. (If you buy a lifetime sub, it's 10 times as much.)
It's a logistical problem more than anything else.

...and when you are done with that; take a folding
chair to Creation and then suplex the Void.
Replacing the second rear phaser array on my cruiser with a second Quantum Torpedo launcher really proved more useful. Its much easier t get a torpedo into a downed shield quadrant, plus I can fire one from the front launcher, trigger H.Y.Torpedoes and Evasive Maneuvers and perform a snap turn and fire two more from the rear launcher, continue the snap-spin, and fire a fourth from the forward launcher, all in the space of about 10 seconds.

Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
The 3 slots thing is nothing more then a shameless moneygrab, dressed up in PR nonsense. It really annoys me that €50+€12,95 a month isn't enough. And while from a skillset point of view it isn't that important, remember that there are a number of starter traits (some unique to some races), not to mention cosmetic looks that are pretty much stuck from creation, as well as the 3 unique abilities per tier, which do add up to significantly different characters.
I won't lie and say it'll make me unsubscribe after the first month (although that could happen if the game doesn't lose a few of it's blatant bugs in a hurry), but it does seriously make me think a lot worse of Cryptic.

I didn't need 5 warlocks in WoW either.
I don't think they limit you on how many ships you can own per character. So you'd get to manage the crew, equipment, etc. for every ship you requisition with energy credits.

I kinda want to make my level 11 ship a phaser boat. I like torpedos but I love the look of the phasers. I'll probably only do this in groups though. Just work on taking down shields.

Only one ship per tier. So at tier 4 you can have 4 ships.

Well if you've got the credits you can by other ships. In closed beta my Engineer got his free Lt. Cmdr cruiser, than I bought a science ship. So, if you buy one of ever class for every tier, thats 4 tiers of 3 ships, so 12 ships.

Do you have a source on that? I know in CB I had 5 ships at tier 3:
Starter Tier 1, 2 tier 2 ships (Escort and Science), 1 tier 3 (Heavy Escort), and the runabout from DS9.
I've tried the space thingy and there were no nodes, on the ground there were no hostages, making the mission unwinable.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.
So everyone has the exact same ship for like the first 20 or so hours of gameplay. Can't they at least give us a few different options depending on what role you pick? It's kind of silly to see two dozen very close to identical starships in every newbie zone.
Also we could use more uniform types, but it seems roughly half of the uniforms they plan to have at launch are available as preorder bonuses or other promotions depending on where you go. Cmon, really? 3 character slots unless you buy X, free stuff if you buy Y, C-store!
This whole thing feels one step shy of a free to play game
There's a Manual online. It's got some useful information, but it's pretty sparse. I've been coming the Official Forums trying to dig up information on game mechanics and such.
Quest rewarded ship equipment is not better than the basic stuff you start with
Never ever do a ground mission with someone you don't know
On the plus side i picked up a disruptor bank this morning and it's very nice.

I got some sort of shield that was exactly the same as my starting shield, except is had less shield points...
I did sell it for a bunch of energy credits to my replicator so I might be able to buy something better whenever I remember to go back to the stardock.

Just a heads up, the lady who sells ship parts at the stardock gives full value for stuff you sell. Atleasy she does for me. It's worth it to save the big things you aren't going to use and sell them back at base and only use the replicator to clear out the food items and cheap stuff.

There are what, 6 or 8 different uniform types with mind boggling amounts of color schemes.
And although the starter ship is the same basic type, there is plenty of variation when you edit your components, colors, materials, etc.
And again -- this is beta, ofcourse everyone is going to be in the same ship. After a few weeks when people get over lvl 10 and higher we'll start seeing a lot of ship variation.
STO is suppose to be extremely transaction based, it was being mentioned months ago before most got to really see it so I'm not surprised they're going to nickel and dime people as much as possible with slots and no doubt other features to come, I fully expect a good many "horse armors" with this game.

So, the lifetime seams like a good deal to me. I'd buy it but I'm broke right now. maybe if I get my tax money in time...
Does seem like a good deal, it's the equivalent of 17months at $15/month. I'm just worried

Efficient on Borg Bridge officers. So all your bridge officer stats effect your ship. Even inherent traits.
So, for example, were i to have 3 Bolians. I'd get +15 to all my power stats? +20 if my captain had it as well?
That's not how Efficiency works. +X to Power Efficiency means you get extra points in those particular skills (I think they're Commander/Captain skills, depending on which skill). Those stats boost the effectiveness of active abilities which raise power levels. For example, raising the Shield Efficiency skill (via SPs or inherent talents) would make the Emergency Power to Shields ability on your engi BO work better.
I keep hearing that people have 3 characters. Is that true? I only have 2 and can't make another. I know on day 1 of OB I had a server error happen when I created a character. It didn't show up in my list after that.

They are prob referring to how you can only have 3 in the release version of the game. You start out with 2 and get an extra if you create a Klingon character.
If you want more you'll have to purchase them from the STO Store for a price not yet determined.
steath is a horrible pick but all and all I feel traits and even skills (the captain "skills" that are all stat point buffs) don't really make much difference.
The damage reduction traits seemed to work for me on the ground awhile back, but it's been awhile since I did a lot of comparisons. The Vulcan pinch power works pretty well and I've used it to bring unruly Klingons to heel. I never noticed a difference with various traits in space, though. So, I've been making unknowns that look like humans with hepatitis and have all the physical damage reduction traits.
Man. There is no way I can justify $250 to my wife for one game. Even for playable Borg. If I have a preorder and go monthly for a little while can I still lifetime later? Or is this a now or never offer?
Dude, this is what second credit card accounts are for. And, with Champions, they turned off lifetime at launch and they haven't turned it back on again, so, given that history, I'd say pre-launch or never.

Better yet is there a resource online somewhere that has this information, the official forums aren't informative , maybe they are but I just don't have the patience to sift through the fan fiction.

and what is there to do when you are max level ?
AIUI 10 levels per rank and 5 ranks, so essentially the max level is 50.
I'm not sure anyone knows what happens for the end game. Closed Beta players, did any of you get that far?

The main site is very bad when it comes to anything but a quick paragraph or two explanation about the game and each faction. Sadly, there's just not a lot of "technical, min/max" info out there. Heck, there's not a lot of basic info on their site either. Most of it is gleened through reading interview and watching videos.
As far as what there is to do at max level, again there's not much info out on that either. PvP in the few battle settings they have seems to be all there is at the moment. Although I hope for their sake that they mention something soon.
