Who wants to play Zendo? It's normally played with those little Icehouse pyramids, but you can do it with hand-drawn pictures, and that's what I'm doing here.
Here's how it works - or at least, how this here forum version will.
I arrange some of these little translucent colored pyramids into arrangements called "koans." I also have a rule for whether or not a koan has the Buddha-Nature. For example;
"a koan has the buddha-nature if and only if it contains a red piece."
"a koan has the buddha-nature if and only if one of the pieces faces left."
The rule is secret. Your job is to guess what it is!
Some of the koans I make will have the Buddha-Nature, and some will not. I'll make two koans to start with. One will have the Buddha-Nature (and thus have a white stone next to it - a white stone means, "has the buddha-nature") and one will not have the Buddha-Nature (and thus have a black stone next to it - a black stone means, "does not have the buddha-nature.")
==============
Turn order:
Each Student takes a turn. On your turn:
1. Build a koan. Use different-colored pyramids to build one. A pyramid comes in five colors:
- red
- blue
- yellow
- green
- black
A pyramid can be placed straight up, or on its side. On its side, it can face either left or right - which way it points determines what way it's facing. A pyramid can be placed on its side on top of other pyramids, so it's in the air, kinda.
A pyramid is considered "grounded" if it touches the ground. It's called "ungrounded" if it does not, some how.
You can only use Pyramids, nothing more.
When pyramids are placed, they follow laws of physics and gravity. Pretend you're actually placing these little guys on a table.
The pyramids stack, so a pyramid can go on top of a pyramid. They won't completely cover each other. See below, it'll kind of look like a Christmas tree. Any number of pyramids can be stacked this way.
Pyramids are considered touching if they share a line.
There are two sizes of Pyramid - large and small. Large pyramids have 2 dots on them, small pyramids have 1 dot on them. Please mark all pyramids with dots, even if it's obvious what size they are. If a large pyramid covers a small pyramid, it completely covers it, but you can still see the smaller pyramid underneath it - it just doesn't "Christmas tree" like in the example above.
So when it's your turn, draw your own koan.

2. Say either "Master" or "Mondo".
If you say Master, I mark the new koan with a black or white stone.
If you say mondo, all Students must guess if the new koan has the Buddha-Nature or not. PM me whether you are answering black stone (it does not) or white stone (it does) and I will reveal all answers simultaneously. I will then mark the koan with the correct answer, and each player who answered correctly gets a coveted Guessing Stone.
3. Optional stuff
- Use one or more guessing stones to guess what the rule is.
- If possible, I will disprove your guess. I will build a koan which has the Buddha-nature but which your guess says does not, or I will build a koan which does not have the Buddha-nature but which your guess says does.
- Spend another guessing stone to repeat the process.
4. End of turn, pass to the next guy.
=======================================
Looking for maybe three or four players. If someone gets inactive, anyone else can take their spot by requesting me through PM. Sign up in something
colorful so I can see!
