Quick Question. I am totally late to the MGS4 party. is it worth it to even click on the multi-player option? oh and I just finished the microwave hallway...I cried like a lil girl....like 3 times.
The part where Akiba, Meryl, and Snake shoot themselves over to Ocelot's boat. I figure it was close to the end, but I had trouble getting past it, and then I ended up giving my PS3 away. Why is this microwave hallway so sad? Does Snake finally succomb to FoxDie? Or does Boss die? Ocelot's the final boss, right?

Massive endgame spoilers:
The microwave hallway is a section where you have to rapidly press X to get Snake to walk down a hall while being blasted by microwaves. The game goes split-screen, with Snake on one half and different shots of all the different people fighting and losing against Liquid's army on the other. Mei Ling's ship is getting overwhelmed by the Outer Haven, Meryl and Akiba are struggling to fight off FROGS and near the end run out of ammo, and Raiden, who's now armless, is doing everything he can to fight off a gang of FROGS in front of the microwave hall. Meanwhile the further you get through the door the more Snake becomes fatigued by the microwaves, and the faster you have press X to make him move even a little. By the end of it he's desperately clawing at the floor to pull himself towards the exit and your whole arm is on fire from repeatedly mashing X so much, which is intended to try and establish empathy with Snake.
As for FOXDIE, Snake finds out that Drebin really did inject him with something else when he upgraded his nanomachines: a new strain of FOXDIE. This one supressed the old malfunctioning virus and designated all of the original Patriots as targets. In the final scene of the game, Big Boss brings Major Zero and meets with Snake in the graveyard from the beginning. Big Boss willfully exposes himself to Snake in order to contract FOXDIE so that he can finally die, and he kills Major Zero, who's extremely old and feeble, by turning off his oxygen tank. As he's dying, Big Boss and Snake share a smoke at The Boss' grave, and BB tells Snake that in a few years the new FOXDIE will become pandemic also, so he should stop fighting and live those last few years to the fullest, which is an opportunity BB never got.
Liquid Ocelot is the final boss. It's a fist-fight vaguely similar to the one you have with Liquid near the end of MGS. There's three phases to the fight. The first one you have MGS1 style healthbars and the boss' is labeled "Liquid." The music is the MGS1 alert song. After you drain that bar he gets back up, and your bars turn into MGS2 Health bars. Liquid's name changes to Liquid Ocelot. The music's the MGS2 alert song. You beat him down again, and he gets back up as just Ocelot. You get MGS3 style healthbars and fight the last part of the fight to Snake Eater. You literally punch Liquid's personality out of him.

I don't get this. If you didn't finish the game, didn't feel like borrowing someone's ps3, but still wanted to know the ending, why not just youtube it?

I have this urge to play through MGS4 again... but god damn those cut scenes are way, way too long. I don't want to skip them, because I don't want to miss any of the story, but Jesus I just rarely have the time to commit to a game like this.
I never thought Major Zero would be one of the bad guys in the end, but I would love to see more of that process of him getting all the money and power with Naked Snake.

Non of them are longer than 40 minutes, and a replay of the game will hardly ever take more than 20 hours if you know what you're doing. Just consider it a shooter Final Fantasy.
When I replayed 4 without watching all of the cutscenes, I think my end time was around 8-9 hours.
Which really isn't that bad of a game length but man, first time through I just didn't realize how much of the game is taken up by cutscenes.
Man I love that the reply to some of the cut scenes being long was none of them are over 40 minutes long... So between playing you get to watch a cut scene of similar length to a 1 hr prime time tv show less comercials. That's pretty long. I enjoyed em a lot even tho I am a bad person and didn't play mgs1-3 to completion because I had a rough time getting into the games since the controls didn't click for me.
If you're interested in the story, why should it matter?

I can't imagine doing a non-lethal run in MGS4. How are you supposed to get past the vehicle sections? Some of those dudes get run over and that is not even your fault.

It doesn't count as a kill unless you actively shoot/cut someone to death. Basically you end up using lots and lots of tranqs.
Well, was it really that urgent that you had to know the ending of the game, right away? It's like asking someone to tell you the ending of [insert plot-twisty movie here] instead of waiting until you had the time to watch and enjoy it.

I accidentally knocked a guy off a cliff in MGS3 during a non-lethal playthrough and thought I was done. He even showed up in the river walk with crows eating him to pieces. At the end though it didn't count as a kill and I got a perfect run.

I wish I'd have killed enemies in more ways than headshots in MGS3 just for that river walk sequence.
There's only one giant gripe I have with the story arc in Metal Gear, as it's a bullshit reason given for something that literally has a perfectly reasonable explanation within the already-established lore:
The fact that Ocelot 'hypnotizes' himself to be Liquid is literally the dumbest decision I've seen regarding a character in a LONG time. Hell, his mother was The Boss, and his father was A GODDAMN TELEKENETIC PSYCHIC WITH CRAZY AWESOME DNA. You can't tell me that Ocelot's DNA couldn't have grafted with Liquid's, causing the odd hybrid outcome. Hypnotizing?

Really?!
Massive MGS4 Spoilers:
They needed to show that Ocelot was a good guy all along. You can't do that if your explenation for him being possessed by Liquid is: "he was actually possessed by Liquid." It doesn't make sense like that.
It should also be noted that it is heavily implied that Ocelot was actually possessed by Liquid during MGS2, and it was between MGS2 and MGS4 that he underwent the hypnosis (hence the metal arm during the final boss fight of MGS4). So the above explenation is still valid.

See, if the 'hypnosis' was a gradual thing, then sure, I'll bite. The way it was discussed in context (as I remember) almost had a 'SO I FOUND HIS ARM AND I IMAGINED REAAAAAAL HARD AND ATE VEGETABLES THEN I WAS LIQUID!' vibe to it.
Hell, even Ocelot being a 'good guy' is a goofy way to end his character arc. That dude's a badass, as he was literally double-crossing DOUBLE CROSSERS. That's some hardcore awesomeness condensed into one guy. Making him a martyr of any kind sort of defeats the purpose.
Dammit guys, mark them spoilers. There are (more like were) people here who haven't played any of these games before, so even just saying stuff like
I killed a guy and he showed up in the river walk!
is a spoiler.
This thread is a good example as to why I avoid threads for storyline games I want to play. If you want to play a game for its story and you dislike spoilers, your best COA is to get off the internet.
Not that I'm not going to continue to mark my spoilers or anything. I'm really just sympathizing with the people out there in this thread who are trying to avoid spoilers. I really feel for you folks.
Oh, I see, I guess I should mark my obvious gameplay and vague plot line spoilers now.

Snake is going to have to Sneak into a base somewhere and fight goofy bosses with tragic pasts. They will blow up or be eaten by an animal or some crazy shit when
This isn't the general MGS discussion thread. If it were, I'd expect spoilers, especially considering that some of these games have been out way past their statute of limitations. But right from the outset, it's been very clear that there are people, including the OP, who have never played any of the games and have very little clue about what happens in any fashion. Things that are obvious to you (and I'm not talking just to XoB, I'm talking to anyone who's done this, the last page being an example), having played all the games, we're entirely oblivious to. Even the most minor of spoilers should be marked as such, because even if they're minor (or even if they're not and you consider them to be), they are still spoilers.
It's come to the point where I'm apprehensive while reading my own thread, which is ridiculous. If you're that anxious to talk about Metal Gear wide in the open, go and do it elsewhere where people expect it. Right from the outset I've asked people politely (and less so) to conceal anything and everything that's even remotely worth doing, and no matter what you consider to be completely obvious I'd expect you to respect that we'd like to find out what happens as it happens.
EDIT: And hell, with a series like this, it's not a guarantee that anything will happen. Snake winning any given encounter isn't a guarantee when I wouldn't put it past Kojima to kill and revive him twice over the course of the four games.
