So going in on a 4-pack gets you Bioshock and Bioshock 2 for $35?
On Steam, without DRM?
Count me in, if anyone's looking for a 4th. Steam ID : slacktron
DRM is still there, have to use GFWL along with steam.
No kidding. Steam is usually pretty good about identifying 3rd party DRM. They tag Securom, at least.
How godawful is GFWL?

I know the horse is dead and beat, but I wanted to pass on the final DRM word from 2K. First, they've got a release on the Cult of Rapture confirming GFWL and activations.
Second, over on the official forums it was confirmed that the Steam version will be using SecuROM.
you said "and now our SecuROM is less restrictive on Steam" could you give us a little more detail on that.
Yes, it is on both versions to check the executable and the date, and only that. No more SecuROM installation limits!
So, make of it what you will. Again, sorry to bring it up yet again, but there's be so much damned confusion that I thought a 2K release was worth mentioning.
Actually, I'm willing to throw down on a Steam 4-Pack. I'm having second thoughts on the Special Edition. My steam ID is "tardcore". Anyone, feel free to shoot me a PM if interested.
Normally, Steam has the 3rd party DRM up at the top of the page under "Game Details", but in this case they don't acknowledge the Securom component until the bottom of the page under "DRM Information".
I should have read more carefully before I posted that I'd be willing to buy, but as it is, you'll have to count me out of this one.
So have we seen a lot from the press in terms of positive previews of this? As in, they've actually played it?

IGN have a for/against right here of their current pros and cons of Bioshock 2 after a few hours of tinkering with the singleplayer and multiplayer modes, citing they didn't like the change to hacking (calling it a "[...] new mode caters to mindless twitch gamers – which, honestly, is not what BioShock is or should be about."), the engine looking rather dated, and that it didn't feel as "quirky" as the first Bioshock (The removal of vending machine music was what the writer was aiming specifically at).
Gamespot were impressed here with the hacking change and the general tone of the game after mucking around for an hour, hour and a half. They had a completely different view on the hacking, and found it refreshing compared to the old system which felt like it broke up the pacing of the game.
GameTrailers isn't linking any reviews or previews to they get a big fat :v: for that.
Also, here are your achievements. A lot of old familiar faces in there. Big Brass Balls seems to have been toned down - less gamescore, but from the description it can be done on any difficulty, just don't use a Vita-chamber. Also, calling it now, the 100 Gamescore secret achievement is probably going to be along the lines of "complete the game on the hardest difficulty", possibly without using a vita chamber.

I feel a lot better about it than "Hey let's break up the flow of the game and combat by making you play an asinine mini-game every time you want a slight discount, or to make a turret/camera friendly". By the end of my recent Historian runthrough, I was so fed up with hacking I just made sure I was at max hack tools or just bought out the machines.
Hehe, I was one of the folks that was fine with the hacking in the first game (from a conceptual standpoint any ways), but I know that by about halfway through the gamethe hacking just became impossible unless you were kitted out to be a hacker and spent hours playing pipe dream as a kid. I'm really looking forward to the new system, though I suspect the dificulty curve on it will be just as over the top by some point in the game.
I really don't get why people are so upset about DRM.
How many fucking times do you install and uninstall your games?! I install games and they stay there for YEARS (if lucky)! Calm down people.
Personally, I think activation limits are the least offensive part of DRM. I have a problem with the SecuROM files, processes, conflicts, and data mining. If it were just activation limits, I wouldn't have an issue.
But then, I don't think it's worth getting worked up over, either. There's plenty of other great games coming out soon, and though I'll regret missing BioShock 2, I'm not going to write a tirade to 2K or burn a Big Daddy in effigy or something like that. It's just personal choice on the matter.
I agree, Hawk. I've never had any problem with install limits.
I totally understand how those who take strong stands against DRM are basically the only thing standing between PC games and completely tyrannical DRM, however, and for that I thank them.
I see what you're saying. But I've NEVER EVER run into a problem with a game and DRM. I just don't get what people get worked up over.
Well, on the flip side of the coin, I personally have had some serious issues in the past - Specifically with SecuROM. I guess it's a "once bitten, twice shy" thing. I can completely understand if it's something that's never given you a problem in the past. No reason to worry about it if it's transparent - Which probably just makes complaints that much more unbearable, I realize.
Edit: Also, I'm really, really confused as to why they need it in BioShock 2 on Steam. The official forums claim SecuROM is needed to check the date and verify the executable - But Steam does that already? So, why would they include it with the Steam version of BioShock 2?
I'm still kind of iffy on this game. Like, the whole idea of returning to Rapture just doesn't jive. The first game at no point made it seem to me like Rapture had a probable lifespan of two years, much less a decade. Place was fucking falling apart and inhabited purely by completely unhinged borderline animals.

It feels like a very forced retread.
Well, yeah, that's the discussion everyone was having when Bioshock 2 was announced, but at this point I think we're better suited to judge the game based on its actual merits. Once it comes out, of course.

Well yeah the reason I'm bringing it up is because this is obviously how I've felt since it was announced, but reading up on the plot details that have been revealed since have only reinforced/compounded that impression.
All of this shit sounds really improbable and weird in light of what we saw in the first game.
Also I guess I'm still a little embittered over how the first game completely fell apart at the end.
Yeah, I know what you mean. The whole "now YOU'RE the big daddy!" thing reeks of the sophomoric "bigger, badder, and more badass" typical to bad sequels. (See Prince of Persia: Warrior Within)
Thanks to steam four-packs, however, I only paid $33 for Bioshock 2, so not a huge investment.
This seems to have devolved into a PC-only discussion for the purchasing of Bioshock 2 and its methods on Steam.
I, on the other hand, just finished paying off my Bioshock 2 CE for the 360, and shortly will begin cleaning the old record-player and testing it out to see if it works...

When it comes out, I'm looking to perhaps get the ball rolling on the multiplayer if there's significant interest. The least I can say is "Give it a try" because it looks real fun.
And I'm glad to see you guys banning together for the Steam 4-pack. Good solidarity.
I have no idea why I Pre-ordered this. When I saw you got the first one for free with a pre-order I bought it without a second thought. Halfway though it now and fairly enjoying it though, I'm looking forward to the second one now.
Right near the start when a splicer sneaked up behind me in a room full of steam I actually yelled in fear, no game has done that to me before. There are masterfully executed shocks in this game.

Games for windows live, It's like the steam client, but more tempermental, once you have it working it's fine though.

The limited installs crap is something I don't support.
I am going to wait untill they remove it before buying it.
Like what they did with BioShock 1.

edit: Oh wait, it's a GS AU preview. Makes much more sense, though I have seen that guy on the left in a lot of reviews lately.
Not sure how I feel about the metered hacking.

Whoa, seriously? That really makes me feel really ignorant. That is, undoubtedly, the best portion of Bioshock.

Give to a friend.
I've introduced at least 3-4 friends to the magical world of Bioshock, and I enjoy it every time someone takes my advice.
Then they like BioShock, pre-order BioShock 2 and the process repeats, lol.
