Living In Boston

Hey guys, you may remember me from my thread on "Moving to Boston". Well, I am here. I've secured all of my funding, a nice little set up in graduate housing, and a 27 month program in nurse anesthesia.

I moved out here from Rochester, MN where I worked for a few years at the Mayo Clinic, but I am originally from DeKalb, Illinois (just outside of Chicago).

Anyway, now that I've figured out the T (I think) where to shop for food (Star Market just down the street), I've finally settled in over the last week.

I'm looking for suggestions on stuff to do or to make sure I check out. I can't do anything crazy right now, I'm waiting on my sweet sweet refund from Mr. Citibank. I live down in Brighton just off of Beacon and Chestnut Hill Rd by BC.

I am in the business of saving lives.

Well Kantankeris and I are off of the Allston St T Stop and I just quit my job so I have plenty of time to show you around one day if you'd like.

I live down in South Boston but I'm usually at my girlfriend's in Somerville.

What sort of things do you like to do? If you've got a significant other that you'd like to do something cute with, there's a skating rink set up in the Commons (Park St. T stop - Red and Green lines). There's also a tiny one in Harvard Square (Red line) across the street from Charlie's Bar and Outdoor whatever (good outdoor drinks in the summer).

There are tons of cheap good shows around town but check out the Paradise in Brookline, Great Scott, or Harper's Ferry, both in Allston (Harvard Ave. T stop on the B Green line - you're most likely better off walking than ever getting on the B line).

If neither strike your fancy, what sort of things would you be interested in?

Kendall Square Cinema is great if you like independent and foreign films.

Also, this facebook group occasionally posts passes to free previews of upcoming films.

Right now I am flying solo until my long time girlfriend moves out here this spring / summer. I haven't even started classes yet (not until Wednesday) so I'm sure my social life will pick up appropriately, but I was just looking for suggestions of stuff to check out in the meantime.

I really like shows and plays and things like that. I also love sports, so I'm looking forward to catching Boston games and BC Eagle stuff.

I took the T down to Kenmore Square and that looked like a cool little area.

Kanktankeris, I might take you up on that sometime this week, I'll shoot you a PM.

As far as PAX East, I missed the Early Bird registration, but I might register later on regardless of my financial situation. I never could afford to fly out to PAX West, but I want to check it out.

If you like "big ball" or "regular" bowling because candlestick is the worst thing ever invented.... go to the end of the red line, Alewife. Now you have to sorta leave the station out to the right and walk up the highway ramp thing about a quarter mile and there is a real bowling alley up there.

sorry not the best instructions in the world, more of one of those I could easily show you in person and it isn't hard to find, but hard to describe. Maybe a some locals/school people may be able to assist if you aren't the most adventurous on your own.

I suggest you check out the North End - Mike's Pastry specifically. The Old North Church is up there along with a few graveyards. It might be something fun to check out on your own or even later with your girlfriend when she comes out. Also, I know it's cheesy, but the Boston Duck Tours are a really fun way to get to know some parts of the city. They probably won't be running until later in the year though.

I suggest you begin to hate BU. Like the rest of us.

Also, down in Cleveland Circle, by where you live, are some great places to eat. Eagle's Deli (which is closed for a month for renovation or something like that) is a great classic Jewish delicatessen, and Anna's Taqueria has the best Mexican food in Boston. My favorite pizza delivery is Pizza Etc, which also has great cheesesteaks and grilled chicken salads. Wings Over Brookline has good wings.

Wings Over Brookline has good wings.

You think Wings Over Brookline is better than Wing-It? The Pterodactyl sauce at Wing-It is so good.

If you're in Cleveland Circle, Cityside is a pretty good bar, especially since the renovation. I don't know if BC is back, yet, but if they are, the time to enjoy it would be any evening other than Tues/Thurs/Fri/Sat.

White Horse on Linden Ave and Brighton Ave in Allston has a $7 buffet style Brunch (not including cocktails), which is surprisingly worth it. I haven't been there in about a year or so, so it may be more than $7, now.

The Coolidge Corner theater has regular events that include Q&A with independent directors, actors, critics, etc. so if le cinema is your bag, you might enjoy those.

Might want to read Cheap Thrills Boston as a general source of shit-to-do about town.

Eagle's is not a Jewish deli at all. For that go to Zaftigs.

Also, Wings Over beats the pants off of Wing-It and for goodness sake do not go to Mike's or Modern, go to Bovas.

I wouldn't consider Zaftigs a Jewish deli at all, either. They need to get their pickle game on point. I'll give them a good smoked salmon bagel, though. If you want Jewish deli check out Rubin's. They observe Sabbath and close early on Friday and all day Saturday and are a little over-priced but the matzoh ball soup is totz worth it.

Wings Over Brookline has amazing cheese fries, actually. Just remembered that.

I don't HATE BU, just yet. I think it sucked they beat BC in the Fenway classic this year, though.

I did catch the BC Eagle men's basketball game where they (we) got smoked by Duke.

To be fair, I can't stand BU or BC students. The only difference is BC students tend to not leave the upper B Line whereas the BU students love getting drunk and puking all over the B Line.

But still, I can't stand them both equally.

Me and a couple of friends have a Wing-It challenge every year where we order one order of each kind of wings they have.

Wing-It really only has like 3 or 4 good sauces. Everything else is disgusting. But those 3 or 4 are amazing haha.

For the most part, I agree. There is a conventional student at both places, neither being that great. BU just happens to have heartless drug-induced hipster trash whose life revolves around beating us at hockey. Maybe they could try playing us at football.. wait, do they even have a team?? PU, BU.

Yes but at BC you get the kids that think they're somehow better than BU simply because they go to BC when in reality they just couldn't get into either school across the river and are inflating their own egos by beating down BU to feel better about it.

Pretty much. Though I got into Tufts and was waited at Harvard (none of which matters because I'd go to BC regardless). I just enjoy the rivalry-- the douches at BU only make it sweeter.

Assuming it's still there (I moved back in May), Spike's Junkyard Dogs on Brighton Ave (near Harvard Ave) is awesome. It's a tiny hot dog place with all sorts of toppings, and good fries. The crowd can be entertaining or irritating depending on your tastes though.

Also nearby was my favorite comic book store, the New England Comics Harvard Ave location (not to be confused with the Harvard Street one in Brookline, Harvard Ave store has the friendly punk girls). Especially since the guy who owns Comicopia decided to replace his old staff with teenage manga girls a couple years ago...

I am very intrigued to learn how BC falls into this hierarchy of campuses around Boston. I'm a graduate student here, though, so I don't know how embroiled in rivalry I'll get. I plan to attend the home games, but do not intend to throw up on the T.

Dude, Hipsters. Is that where all those people are from? BU? Every time I take the T into the city or government center, there is always a ton of people who get on around Kenmore or so that dress hipster and have Asian girls with them. I swear I think Asian chicks are like an accessory around these parts, every white hipster / douche has one with him.

Those are more likely Tufts douchebags. Riding the Red Line back into the suburbs at night, the train will be packed with those characters and they all disembark at Davis.

Hipsters on the Red line usually go to Tufts, sometimes Harvard, but they don't venture out much. Hipsters on the Green line go to BU. Berklee hipsters are more punk, BU a little bit more like an urban outfitters catalog. Asian girls kind of just float around, attached to the ascribed hipster of the area.

Spring through Fall there's a relatively good farmer's market right in Copley Square, though you may want to check out the Mass Farmer's website to find one closer to you, but being in Back Bay makes the Copley one a good location to get more than just grocery shopping done in one trip.

EDIT: That would be because there are two malls (the Prudential - more generic with a food court, and the Copley - more high-end with Louis Vuitton and Jimmy Choo) and Newbury St., which contains retail stores of everything from Urban Outfitters and American Apparel through Chanel and Burberry, right in the heart of Back Bay (accessible via the Back Bay Orange Line T stop or the Prudential, Hynes, Copley, and Arlington Green Line T stops).

    I went to BU.

All I did was drink, barely pass Accounting, and one time I invited this girl from Tufts over and we did a few lines, pre-gamed, then went to Great Scott, where I proceeded to drink more and smash a glass on the bar, then accidentally locked ourselves in my room, naked, and, in an act of desperation, smashed the doorknob off with a hammer, as my roommate and his girlfriend looked on in horror from the living room.

    Go, Allston!

Um, if you're interested in getting a tattoo, I would recommend Regeneration on Harvard Ave (between Commonwealth Ave and Brighton Ave - that's the Harvard Ave T stop on the Green B Line). Dan Bythewood is a great artist. If you search my posts you can see the Alphonse Mucha's Evening Star he did on my forearm.

So I live in Cambridge and mostly know Cambridge.

Harvard Square is kind of expensive and boutique-y, but it it nice to walk around and they do a lot of "events"

Davis is probably a better hang-out place. It's technically in Somerville but doesn't really feel like it.

Inman Square, which isn't really T-accessible (well, it's Central or Lechmere and a hike) has some great bars and the best Indian dive in the city (the Punjabi Dhaba)

There isn't much to do in Porter Square really. Walk to Harvard or Davis I guess.

Union Square is kind of a diamond in the rough. Some nifty bars and restaurants with reasonable prices. It's problem is that it is not T-accessible and also that the roads going through Union are fucking bad and get worse every time I go there. Like, when I moved to Boston five years ago the intersection sucked and they were doing work, digging up the road, etc. Five year later they are still "doing work" but really it just looks like someone shelled the intersection for like a quarter-mile in every direction.
