Every Day The Same Dream - An epic browser game

ClerilCleril __BANNED USERS regular
edited January 2010 in Games and Technology
I saw that this game was abstract and since I am one to condone abstract ideas I spent 10 minutes or so playing it. A review for a 10 minute or so game? Have I gone mad? No, I have simply smiled. Smiled at how a game with ten minutes of content can make me think, tell an amazing story with just a few sentences of monologue, and have an ending to make most minds warp.
edtsd.png

The plot at the start is simple. You are a man, with a wife, get dressed, go to work. The real story starts when you decide to do something different, like showing up to work undressed. This is how you "beat" the game. By doing things other than your typical schedule of wake up, get dressed, be berated by boss, work in cubicle, rinse, and repeat...you unravel the amazing story this simple game has to offer.

The controls are what you see in the screen shot. Simple as that.

The graphics are mixture of black, white, and grey. You are a faceless man with a faceless wife meeting faceless others to help you realize your dream. The game is simplistic in it's graphics, even for a browser game, but that's the point. The game may even bore you but again, that's the point.

Every day the same dream is again, around 10 minutes long, and a free browser game. Take 10 minutes out of your life and do something...different. You won't regret it.

Find the game here: http://www.molleindustria.org/everydaythesamedream/everydaythesamedream.html

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules....if I am, then :winky:

I'm a little sick of these sorts of "indie" games that end up with the same or similar twists and have nearly no story at all for the sake of "indie" gaming.

First of all that's what's great about "indie" gaming, or more generally low budget games. You can very quickly get in and out, you can enjoy the game within 2 minutes. Some of them even have stories and I skip them! I just want good addicting gameplay with no plot exposition.

That said, there are a lot of great indie games, check http://www.bytejacker.com/ for weekly reviews...
It's just that websites like PA are relatively conformist and everyone promotes the same tastes and a lot of games end up under the radar. A great example is the popular "adventure games are dead etc" no they are not, there are TONS and TONS of excellent ones being cranked out each year in Europe, check AdventureGamer. Our tastes are really pretty shallow..

I like some cheap, indie flash games. What I don't like is nebulous "stories" that don't mean anything.

Living your life on a schedule will lead to the same boring days. Doing things different will change the world.

The ending is meant to be interpreted by you though.

Go back outside after you get to work and your boss says "You're late". Pick up the fallen leaf.

You mean how doing different things will
lead you to a great appreciation of how drab and dull the world is and how you should just kill yourself?

That was very depressing and wasn't very fun. I thought it would be deeper than that.

i'm all about games as art, and efforts to further games as an artform.

i think this is a really empty game though. tries reallly hard to convince you that it has something to say and then shrugs at you when you ask what it is.

It's not a game. An interactive video is not necessarily a video game.

I don't say in a negative manner. It's got a nice style and the music was catchy. But the message was rather old hat and the ending was nothing shocking or special.

Still, if it was just a video I don't think it would have as much impact.

Well, may not have been shocking but considering that in 10 minutes it got it's point across that is a feat in itself. Also, to many, this game spoke to them personally because it examines their life.

Interesting to see the difference between responses here and reddit. Conclusion: Reddit is full of potheads.

Also; I'm not quite sure what type the message the game is trying to give me by having a hobo take me to a cemetery while in my underwear or my boss complaining that I am late after jumping off a building.

I'm not calling it a picture or a movie.

It's a video in which you have interaction. Audience interaction by itself does not make it a game.

The definition of game might change as a result of work such as this, however. I can see that happening.

Hey, I'm a pothead, and didn't find it to be profound or anything. I mean, it was a nice diversion for 10 minutes, but the message is kind of cliche and useless. Basically it is saying that mundane jobs/lifestyles are killing you spiritually. So instead of going to work, you should blow it off and go pet a cow or look at a leaf. The problem is that survival pretty much entails doing some sort of task every day, whether that means working an office job or hunting for food, so inevitably it will involve repetition. You can't just go around doing nothing but soaking in life's little details. All you can do is try to get a job that you don't hate.

Did we learn nothing from Office Space?

Don't leave the screen while it falls

Also i enjoyed the hell out of this. I mean, i guess this can hit really close to home if you hate your job and can't find something you enjoy even a bit more.

edit: i mean, its true this isn't terribly profound. Office space did it better etc. But its not shit.
edit edit: Blame it on the rampant overuse of the word epic i guess. Epic means "its ok i guess" nowadays.

This is one of those games where your reception of it will depend very heavily on your own experiences and entertainment preferences. It didn't really do anything for me, since I prefer to experience stories through the eyes of characters that grow and develop in a fleshed-out world. I can appreciate why some people are moved by the game/art/whatever term you want to give it, but the storytelling method is too minimalist for me to care.

In other words, I like it when people make stuff like this, but I hope the indie art-game movement won't become too enamored with this style.

Oh dear lord, this so, so hard. It's nice to see people try, but random artsiness for the sake of artsiness without any real true meaning or emotion bugs the shit out of me. Just because you made something that isn't an FPS doesn't automatically make it deep, you need to really do something with it.
