The thing is, this isn't us punishing people who buy it used. The game you are getting on the disc is a complete game. You can play through it from beginning to end, and never will you think 'wow, it feels like something is missing'.
Day 1 DLC is a bonus. Not getting Day 1 DLC is not a punishment.
So basically it's: Full Game + Day 1 DLC = Game with extra content, rather than Full Game = Game on Disc + Day 1 DLC.
Absolutely agree. Feels just like (oh, god, I don't want to start anything with this) Assassin's Creed 2 to me. Sure, the game skipped from 'chapter 11' to 'chapter 14', but it never at any point felt like I was getting less than a full game. Having something extra coming up (or in ME2's case, immediately) is just a sweet bonus.
Yeah, they did a great job on AC2. When I hit that part, I -knew- that it was the part that DLC was going to fill in, but it didn't feel like I got screwed over. Because the game was long enough and fun enough that I didn't feel like I'd gotten anything other than a complete game.
Though I do wonder where (very minor AC2 spoilers)
Ezio got that stylish goatee.
The Bonfire of the Vanities DLC will just be Ezio sitting in a barbers chair while shit goes down outside.
vsove.
I know it's hard for clever reptilian stalkers like you to comprehend, but mammals grow hair over time.
It just feels like there needs to be a plot reason, you know? It's so stylish.
The day Raptors are able to grow Goatees is the day we all become unilaterally doomed.
This is what happened with filmmaking all over again.
The increasing demand for higher and higher quality productions pushes production and promotional budgets higher, pushes the margins higher, etc. You have to get creative in order to make a profit, raising ticket prices won't cut it.
If you want a studio like Bioware to keep pushing the technology and want them to keep getting 'name brand' talent like Martin Sheen then this is how it happens.
There's certainly no -need- to justify it from a business standpoint, but I like it when people know the why and how of game development. It tends to nip many misunderstandings in the bud.
And yeah, jclast, that's about the size of it. I'm referring more, though, to the actual steps a game has to go through in its last month of development - this would short-circuit the usual 'well why didn't they just put it on disc?' arguments. When you know how much of a risk it is to add anything in the last few months of a dev cycle, it becomes more understandable why something may not be included.
From a skeptics perspective, it may seem unusual that it always seems to be a fairly refined (yet safely extraneous) 1-3 hour bit of content.
The other thing I don't quite understand the logic of are the many bonus items. (Dr. Pepper promo, etc)
Do bonus items as seen in DA:0 or ME2 constitute space/time issues? If not, what is the logic behind their creation? I am legitimately interested in the authorship of early DLC like this.
Oh btw, EA/Bioware...would you be so kind as to sell the Normandy Caps? And maybe a model of the Normandy itself? I wanna go to Toy'R'Us and buy me a toy Normandy. I want to see Mass Effect Burger King kids meals. Get Garrus, SuZe, A Evil Collector, and Action Light up Normandy!
I mean, the action figs are awesome. The T-shirts are great. MORE!

You know. One thing I wanted to know that never got answered is...
Will we actually see the opposite gendered races this time?
I mean I've seen the male quarians in screenshots and trailers. But no female Turians, Krogan, etc.
The announcement of specific content months in advance genuinely baffles me. Its a bizarre pr issue every time. The moment you announce something you get to hear all the complaints about timing/delays for months

I read one of those community q and as about that. The answer was basically, "maybe you HAVE seen the females. I can't tell a female alligator from a male, can you? There's nothing to say that they haven't already been in there" which is honestly super lazy sounding. I'm no animal expert, but if you put a male and female version of most animals side by side, I'm sure I could pick out some sexual dimorphism, even if I couldn't definitively say "this is male, this is female."
Male or Female, Inamorta had some of the best one liners in the game.
Shep: "What're you drinking?"
Inamorta: "HUMAN BLOOD... with cinnamon. Go away!"
Where did you meet her again?...
Noveria, the krogan buying the goods the hanar has you smuggle in. You can choose to give it to the hanar, turn the hanar in, or give it straight to the buyer.

Part of the problem, I think, is that if you're actually involved in the process - this all seems logical and nonsensical to you. Because you've experienced it firsthand and you know all the various reasons which we swear, make total sense.
But if you're an average consumer and don't have access to that experience or information - it can seem kind of shady. So you end up with two groups arguing with each other from completely different frames of reference. I really do think more education to the consumer on what happens when and why it happens would avoid a lot of these problems.
The answer to this problem isn't something silly like educating the consumer. Like that can ever happen.
No. What you do, see, is keep the DLC secret. Shelve that shit for half a year while you ride your new ponies, do blow or nail hookers or whatever. I'd be doing all three at once, personally. Then you make a big announcement about the new DLC that you guys whipped up months later (this is a lie, but what the hell, everyone already thinks you guys are a bunch of big fat liars anyway) and charge $texas+$china because by that time, everyone will be starved for more goodness.
Noveria, the krogan buying the goods the hanar has you smuggle in. You can choose to give it to the hanar, turn the hanar in, or give it straight to the buyer.
Oh Frell! I gave it to the Hanar. Next playthrough I'll do it differently.
Man, why you guys gotta taint the thread with DLC complaints. Can't we just get back to effecting masses? Btw, my favorite ME1 shepard quote has to be:
"Friendly welcome, did someone piss in your commanding officer's coffee this morning?"
It was great cause it totally caught me off guard, but for some reason, I totally can't remember what part of the game that quote came from. The only thing I remember is being shot at...
so this scifi part 3.. does it have a fuckton of spoilers like part 2? i need to know which parts to close my eyes and which parts to mute again please.

We could add a toggle for the new content! Adding toggles for everything is easy - the official forums told me so.
"Lots of new content and awesome but maybe deletes your hard drive and kills your dog - Yes/No"
Tried to start a male shep after always playing a female one and i don't know how long i can take it trying to listen to his voice. It's so weirdly disconnected from any other dialogue going on from other people

It's really not that big a deal, man. You just get some renegade points and 15 more credits than you would the other way.
No huge spoilers, but my new favorite line may be
*batarian is attempting to scan Shepard with wrist-mounted omnitool*
Shepard: Try it and you'll be scanning the inside of your colon.
EDIT: To say it again, no big spoilers that we haven't heard before. There are spoilers, but they've been pretty common knowledge if you've been following along. If you're trying to keep to a blackout, I recommend you don't pull this up, though.

I still think we should have had a 'EnableMultiplay = TRUE' line in the DA .ini files, but commented out. When you uncomment it, the game is sped up to 3x and the Benny Hill theme plays over everything in-game.
Standouts so far "Thane", "The Illusive Man" (reminds me of Deus Ex quite a bit)
It seems much more string heavy this time around and a bit more theatrical. Don't know if I care for that.
Maybe I need time to get some context with gameplay. Saren had such a strong motif going with the dulled rolling beats and syncopated drum. Saren's theme with the enormous bloated synths is awesome.

You know. ME really needs a sympathetic Batarian character. I mean, at this point, I just can't not shoot them.

This was very interesting. And I have a new found respect for the Hanar, that was very cool of them to help the Drell out like that.

haha oh dear, they really shouldn't of mentioned the hammerhead this early in development.. im fairly certain this is EA's doing, just cos.

Don't lie, at this point you'd probably shoot a sympathetic Batarian character too.
