Well, I think you could levy that criticism truthfully towards something like Metal Gear Solid 4. You could argue that it didn't even have a story of its own, and all it was doing was trying to explain away every single dangling plot thread from the other games.
I only beat MGS1, and played half of 2. Was able to follow along with 4, although I'm sure I missed out on quite a bit of the "fun" factor in knowing what all went down previously.

Because she's part of the game as well.
I understand their marketing choices. They want Mass Effect to be a cinematic experience, so they've chosen an iconic Male Shepard to fill the role as main character. I don't have a problem with that.
I just feel a little sympathetic for Hale, who 1) is a talented actor in her own right, and 2) has done tons of work for Bioware in the past. It'd be cool if she got some recognition, but I also understand that they can't have both a Male and Female Shepard standing in for trailers and vids and what have you. That would be too confusing.
This might be a silly question...but has anyone figured out how to DEACTIVATE the special ammo powers?
My Shep only has the fire bullets right now, and while they are great for organics, they do less damage to synthetics, and I can't seem to figure out how to turn it off without "switching to a different ammo type."

She's a professional voice actor. Even if they were using the female sheppard as the default focus for marketing she wouldn't get much recognition in the media. Heck, in all the marketing storm I've seen maybe two interviews with Mark Meer, and one of those interviews was little more than a few seconds in the 'Sci vs. Fi' show on SciFi. If anything, her character not being the main focus for the marketing campaign probably meant a bit more free time out of the recording booth since she didn't have to do voice work for all the various ads and trailers.
As it is, she's already one of the most recognized female voice actors out there, and she gets alot of lead or central supporting roles in games or animated features. I'm fairly certain she's not desperate for either work or attention.

This game is so much more different from ME1 that it feels really weird, but goddamn if the Vanguard's charge isn't the best fucking thing ever.
