Tebow to interrupt the Super Bowl to rant about abortion

WordherderWordherder Registered User regular
edited February 2010 in Debate and/or Discourse
Even if you don't follow football, you've probably heard of Tim Tebow. He's the quarterback of the University of Florida Gators who says over and over and over and over that he puts his love of Jesus above everything, aside from football and using his professed love of Jesus to appear before every television camera ever manufactured.

It looks like Tebow has finally realized that televised college football probably isn't the best place for him to proselytize. So he's now moved on to the Super Bowl, even though he's not technically in it. From Slate:
It's been an entire two weeks since Tim Tebow was in the news, so God's favorite quarterback is back in action. But this time he's not on the field (football or mission); he's in the studio, filming a pro-life commercial that will be aired during the Super Bowl Feb. 7. Tebow will appear with his mother, who was told she should get an abortion when she got sick during a mission trip in the middle of her fifth pregnancy. She refused and instead gave birth to a baby boy who would become Heisman Trophy- and National Championship-winning quarterback. Tebow's 30-second spot, which will cost about $2.8 million, is being paid for by the evangelical group Focus on the Family (actually, by a handful of its donors, who gave money specifically for the making of the ad). The broadcast will come a year after Catholicvote.org filmed a pro-life Super Bowl commercial that NBC refused to air. The network said it didn't want ads about "political advocacy or issues." CBS is apparently cool with political advocacy, as long as it's Tim Tebow doing the advocating. But an online backlash has already started, and some sports fans wonder whether the ad will tarnish Tebow's reputation before he sets foot on an NFL field.

Do we really need political issue ads running during the Super Bowl? Is it wrong for CBS to take the money? And if Tebow is such a devout Christian, then why is he wasting his time playing football?

Why the crap did I ever make my original name "cloudeagle?"

Another reason for me not to watch the Super Bowl.

Also, it's fine with me if Focus on Family wants to pour money down the toilet.

It's a commercial and not during an election. If they're paying and not being funded by the Super Bowl, why would it be wrong for it to air during designated commercial spots regardless of whether its has political content?

I don't get it. It's okay for Budwiser to tell me to spend my hard-earned cash on their pisswater, but it's not okay for some atavistic douchebag to tell me that abortions are wrong?

Oh, right, political ads might induce some critical thinking. That's the last thing we want in the middle of supermarket Sunday.

If anyone wants to push a political message, the Super Bowl would be a good time. I mean, hey, Super Bowl commercials right?

Then again... I want to laugh at shit, not have a guy tell me how he was almost aborted and grew up to be soooooooooo awesome.

I wonder how many households are going to erupt in arguments when the commercial plays and people comment on it, and it rolls into argument, and then OH FUCK I JUST MISSED THE BIG PLAY.

Thats why Kurt Warner derseves many props. Warner and his wife are public advent Christians, but don't go on the Evangelical way of "My Soap Box..You listen" spreading or forcing a message down people's throats. He's calm, cool, and collective. You don't see him finger pointing at others and proclaiming to be Holier than thou.

And Tebow was almost aborted by his christian mother? Even if the story is true, I find that hard to fucking believe that devout christian parents would even consider any type of aborting whatsoever. That story is really suspcious sounding to me.

I wonder who put Tebow up to this?

I liked the Super Bowl for two reasons: commercials and an excuse to eat poorly. Now I can buy shitty food whenever I feel like it and the Super Bowl commercials have been on a decline for years now.

Now, I think they are well within their right to spew a political statement during the Super Bowl. Might as well get people to think about shit that matters rather than fail miserably at being clever about whatever beer you're pitching.

Wiki is stating that his mother had complications with him during pregnancy to the point of infection and the doctors recommended abortion, to which she refused. So this would qualify as almost aborted. So it was less a crisis-of-faith and more practical medial issue.

I don't get the commercial. She had a CHOICE and she was allowed to make that CHOICE. Being pro-CHOICE, I find that to be a satisfactory outcome.

Is Tebow saying we should be against mandatory abortion? Is that a pressing issue worthy of lofty ad time?
