Lets say you talk on the phone for an hour that day. 1 1/2. Lets say you do your email for 20-30 minutes total that day. 1 hour. Lets drop another 30 minutes or so during my lunch break where I am browsing the forums, and checking up on the news. I have 30 minutes of battery life to spare.

This is a common day for me. It's not a lot of wiggle room.
But why did you divide 5 hours to 2 1/2?
Because arbitrarily fucking with the number helps his "point"

5 hours, I could probably just about handle. But then again, my first mini ran it's batter down from 18 hours to just over 10 in a year.
woah..it doesnt have a user replaceable battery? i never even considered that for a phone..if so..fuck you apple

I think it looks like it will be a great product in two years.

First thing is the battery, I sometimes don't make it home for two or three days straight, I would like it to last so I can do that and dick around a bit.

Secondly is the storage, it's obviously limited by flash and as such is a bit small, 20 gig would be a sweet spot for me for music, a little bit of video and enough wiggle room for file transfer.

I have to get the iPhone...I don't know why but this just hits me as the phone I have always wanted and it looks sexy as hell. And the 8GB memory strikes me as being a good amount to be able to put content on I can watch at work...I wouldn't mind charging it at work either since I sit in a cubicle anyway. Even if there are PDA's or other touchscreens out there, I just prefer the looks and features in this one...

Ok, so the battery life - what is it 5 hours for full bore PDA, talking on the phone, etc., 15 hours for listening to music? I'm going to assume it's a lot longer for standby, probably like 30 hours, or so?

When I read this discussion, I'm reminded of the PSP vs. DS discussion. PSP has what, about 5 hours battery life? DS has like 12ish? I'm gonna be honest, 5 hours seems pretty short to me, especially for the hefty premium you're paying to have it all in one device with an un-replaceable battery.

The interface looks pretty slick, like a device of the future, and I'd consider one if it were half the price and supported 3G like the Blackjack.

I look forward to seeing what they do after they iron out the kinks and it comes down in price.

As a note for the above - we don't know that the battery is not replaceable yet. The device has smooth lines, but that doesn't preclude the possibility of a replaceable power source.

A lot can happen in six months. Fingers crossed we could see an increase in overall battery life. That being said - my Macbook is supposed to get 3 1/2 hours of juice. I routinely wring 5 hours out of it. The old adage is underpromise, overdeliver.

So is the main draw of this thing the HDMI? Because I'm having a hard time desciphering why I should care more about the appletv than the Mvix still... I don't have HDMI inputs on my HDTV so that's pretty much moot. But I do a lot of purchasing through itunes. Does the the Mvix not support mpegs downloaded from itunes or something?

Just wondering what the major plus that makes it stand out is.

The HDMI provides a digital throughput - slightly higher quality than component (most people can't tell). It is simple though as it carries uncompressed audio (if available) and video on the same stream/cable.

Maybe we shouldn't say better than the Mvix as much as a better choice for some. It uses the Apple remote - simplicity in itself (which some folks hate for that reason). It streams purchased stuff from iTunes (which I don't believe you can currently do with the Mvix) and it's elegant and wee.

It does appear that it will support USB storage and it's got all the right ports in all the right places. For the price, I like it. So in short, for me, it stands out for iTunes compatibility, size, Apple remote and appearance. YMMV.

The bottom 3rd of the back is black, while the rest is silver. Perhaps it's removable?

Or maybe the entire back is removable. The top of the phone is where the SIM card goes, and you need to get there to put yours in don't you?

Yeah the itunes compatability is extremely essential for me since that's the primary source of most of my music and television downloads. (Of the legal variety.)

And the snazzy GUI and mac remote compatibility really add to it.

    Jesus, this thread moved fast.

Is anyone more interested in the Apple TV thing? Were any specs mentioned? I remember an article not too long ago about how TV show and movie sales on ITMS weren't so hot, and how the tiny screen on the iPod (and I guess some people feel watching TV on a computer is annoying too) was to blame. Apple is really good at finding ways to make people want to buy their expensive, DRM'd stuff.

This has probably already been mentioned but the phone costs as much as a PS3, that's insane. But when I think of the PS3 I feel like it's so overpriced, but I'm almost considering an iPhone.

[spoiler:c252057327]I have Cingular and will be up for an upgrade by the time it ships!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!![/spoiler:c252057327]

It is about making money, of course. It just isn't about making money off the DRMed content, which is what the other post was asserting.

Apple make the vast majority of their money off hardware, not off the iTunes store. The iTunes Store is basically just a big promotional tool for the iPod, and a way to lock people into buying more Apple hardware.

I use about 7-8 hours of music/podcasts/audiobooks through the day.

    I thought you were gone?

You listen to 8 hours of music/podcasts/audiobooks a day eh? That's starting to explain the disparity between your social/conversational skills and, say, the rest of us.

You really are a tremendous prick. Just thought I'd share.

Yea, Syndalis makes a bunch of sense. I don't really care too much about the iPhone so I haven't commented in thread. But I needed to say,

Threepio, who crammed a dick up your ass today.

Dude makes absolutely no sense at all. He's crapping all over the iPhone while making his crap VX6700 sound like some great deal, when Apple's new gadget just utterly outclasses it.

If you're in the market for a smartphone, and you'd rather have a $500 Windows Mobile phone over this ... then I don't know what to say. If this was a face-to-face conversation, I'd just laugh and walk away. What's the messageboard equivalent of this?

Takes you to the main menu.

Can you install software on the thing. That's what's nice about Windows Mobile (and no, I don't own a Windows Mobile phone). Just like with Windows, there's already a ton of (good?) software out there for it already.

Dominating the market is a noble goal, and you're right it has nothing to do with making money.

So the DRM allows Apple to create Hardware lockin, which in turn sells them more hardware which in turn is where Apple make the majority of their money. Correct?

So they aren't making money through DRM?

This is exactly what I was referring too. The Apple TV made me want to buy some iTunes content for some reason. With that iTunes content I would suddenly need an Apple TV device to get the most out of it.

Either way they are giving something away to get something else.
