Even if the connection between the cable and drive is soldered, you could crack the case, carefully cut the soldering, and re-solder the connection cable onto a replacement drive, or cut the connection cable further up and splice in a standard connection for whatever HDD version the 360 uses.
It's only a bit more difficult than repairing a power cable that your dog has chewed threw long as you keep the wires in the right spot.
I am trying to figure out whether or not I should buy a new console or just get it fixed.
If I buy a new console I am no longer stuck with a pissy 20gig console plus I get a new warrenty.
On the other hand it's eighty bucks to fix.
I have read recently that they sometimes just replace the red ring'd motherboard with another old model that is just as prone to breaking instead of the newer ones which are supposedly less prone to the red ring of death.
I don't have any proof or anything though.
Also if you buy a new one you will be able to play ME2 at launch instead of waiting for however long it takes them to fix it.

Well yeah. If the in-stock board lasts you past your service date they save money. Everyone does this.

It is outside it's warranty so I would take it to a local dude. I'd get it back in less than two days probably.

Depending on his chosen repair method that might be even worse (I'm assuming he won't have a newer motherboard to replace it with)
If he's gonna replace those stupid fucking x-clamps on the motherboard with proper bolts and washers (assuming that's the cause--it usually is), that miiiight work but damage to the processor(s) might already be too far gone
If your warranty is void anyway this is probably something you can try to fix at home if you're patient enough, I personally would rather spend either the time on an attempted repair or the money on a new console instead of $80 on a maybe-repair

Knowing how to recognize broken solder points and how to repair them can save you so much money.
I did check out how to do it myself.
breaking down the machine just to access the solder points will take me at least an hour plus there is no guarantee that I'll remember where to put all the pieces.
On top of that you need to order specialist parts in order to do it.
It would take at least a week to get the parts and when you factor in I'd be paying parts plus shipping plus I'm stripping out something that has a stupid amount of screws and a bunch of fidly little shit in order to detach retarded stuff eighty bucks isn't a bad price.
I'm moderately excited for this game, it will be something new to play.
I haven't played ME in a long while, but my saves are still hidden away in my documents

so do we get to pre-load if we bought it on Steam?
I'm not really chuffed either way but I'm wondering when I should start compulsively checking my account for the download option
I do not mind at all waiting a day or two after release to have it installed but fuck I cannot be looking at my account page every half hour to see if the download is available yet

I'm thinking I will get it on the 360. Not too concerned with mods for the game and I am sure it will look plenty good on my tv and I (hopefully) won't have to worry about performance issues.

They've said they've eliminated slowdown and pop-in, and demonstrated this at events. You shouldn't have to worry about performance issues at all.

Javen, is your TV an HDTV larger than your monitor? If the answer is yes, then yes.
not necessarily
a TV playing the game at a particular resolution needs to be quite a bit larger than a PC playing at the same aspect ratio in order to be worth it
assuming you are going to be sitting several feet away from the TV and not two feet away like you do with your computer monitor
I've found playing games on my 42" easier than on my old 21" because now my peripheral vision is part of the screen and not part of the wall behind my desk.

They just figured out Mac's business model. Lock up the supply side and charge way to god damn much for the hardware.
I can find cheaper 1TB drives then I can 120 gig xbox hard drives.

Some time ago I paid for the repair/replacement and three months later whaddaya know
Wrote it off as sunk money, bought a new one, raged at Microsoft for a couple days, haven't looked back

I'd just say that you didn't get it.
I am confident, however, that it does not suck in the slightest.

My video card can hit up to 8192 x 8192
jesus christ
I'm betting your monitor doesn't do that, though
Nah, 1680x1050
If I own a 1080p television the max resolution is 1920x1080, right? Or does "1080p" mean something completely different than native resolution, now?
