Guys, there are an entire generation of kids growing up that haven't bothered really using a PC, or at least not obsessing about it, cause they have iPod Touches and iPhones.
Same thing with the casual computer user. They might not have a top of the line Dell XPS or whatnot, but they have an iPod or iPhone, and know how to use it. It's good enough for them.
And now Apple just managed to release a device that takes these kids, parents, hipsters, etc and sits them down in front of a iPod Workstation that they can do their home/office work on, as well as surf the web et all. And they already know the UI. They're comfortable with it. It works well enough.
I think that's something to consider here. Maybe this device isn't for you? I'm getting vibes of the MW2 "Zomg no server support END OF DAYS!!!!one" thing here.
What also works well enough is a netbook you can buy that has more space, a faster processor, and can do more things than this can. Plus, anyone that knows how to use an iPhone/iPod already knows how to use Windows or Mac OS.
also, is it impossible that the OS will be updated to allow multitasking?
Yes. 1GhZ processor, Apple wouldn't update the OS to allow that, it'd slow it down too much.
Well, it won't be updated by APPLE.
That argument makes no sense, since we don't know anything about the processor. Is it ARM, PPC, x86, or something else? How many cores does it have? Without more information you can't make any assumptions about what it's capable of.
The iPhones and iPod Touches run an ARM processor, don't they? This appears to natively run iPhone/iPod apps so I would think it's the same architecture.
I think SniperGuy just explained WHY I would be interested in a device like this
I don't want to use a netbook to read in bed because it's awkward to hold and slow to boot.
I don't want an ereader because I am very interested in the magazine/comics/video support a device like the ipad can provide.
I also don't own and iphone or ipod touch, but what I would use this for: video, web browsing and the aforementioned books/magazines/comics would be much better suited to the larger screen.
Do I think it's going to be as big as the iphone? No, but I think it's going to be a lot bigger than we're giving it credit for.
Just a query to throw out there, why can't multitasking be added in a later OS update? As I said, I'm not an Apple guy so I may be naive but would it be a hardware limitation or merely something that just hasn't been programmed in?
EDIT I see someone just asked the same question as I was typing my reply.
Is it running Safari or Mobile Safari? Does it run Flash?
No idea on what version of Safari it's running, but the demo unit at least didn't run Flash. However with 60 days before it ships (and with Flash support being a software issue) this doesn't necessarily mean it won't run Flash. But I wouldn't bet on it.
I guess I'm not the only one who said, "oh I suppose that's kinda' neat." Was this Apple's only announcement? Are they rolling out new OSs for iPod Touch? New iTunes features (will the bookstore be part of it or a different thing completely?)
People might not be considering that part of the value of the device will be it's interface. Most tablets shoehorn desktop os's into a touch interface and suffer for it. The iPhone interface is very intuitive, and very much task-centric.
If you understand why the iPhone is a popular device, it should be easy to understand why a bigger one would be, too.
"What also works well enough is a netbook you can buy that has more space, a faster processor, and can do more things than this can. Plus, anyone that knows how to use an iPhone/iPod already knows how to use Windows or Mac OS. "
This is the exact thinking that made windows mobile smartphones the failure that they were once the iPhone came about. But, but it's the power of windows right in my hand!

I think it was speculated that the iPhone/iPod processor is ARM, but I don't know that this was ever confirmed. And while it is likely the case that the iPad uses the same processor architecture this isn't necessarily true.

And here I thought windows mobile failed due to terrible execution. The intention was fucked from the beginning! Poor bastards.

True, which is why tablets have failed up till... Now?

Probably too soon to say. We should probably wait to hail it as a success until the thing hits the shelves. You know, for appearances.

The iPhone 3GS, at least, is supposed to use the ARM Cortex A8.
I'm not happy that there isn't any multitasking. If the processor is supposed to be so much better than the iPhones I would expect multitasking. What exactly is the processor doing besides running the iPhone OS and iPhone applications? iWork? My other problem is that there isn't any Flash. This would be mitigated if there was a Hulu application but there are other websites that use Flash that I would want to use.

I predict that the 2nd/3rd versions will be successes. The gadget/apple nuts will just get the ball rolling

iFixit has a disassembled iPhone 3GS that they noted has a "Samsung ARM processor."
I'd call them having the same architecture more than likely, otherwise you're telling me that they've shoe-horned an emulator into this puppy and that their expansion of the iPhone SDK now includes building apps for two different architectures and they've just neglected to mention that to anyone yet. Possible? Yes. Probable? Not really.

Yes. I'm very happy that there's a rabid apple fanbase with disposable income. They pave the way for complete products I actually want. If only we could use them to keep promising shows on Fox long enough for the writers to finish a story arc.

My problem with the Ipad is that it I already have the tech devices that it supposedly can replace but I can't justify a supplementary piece of technology that looks cool. I need a phone, I need a laptop, I need an ereader, but this thing seemingly just replaces the functionality of two of those things but in a mediocre way.
I was going to ask if this was a joke but then I saw what website it was.
Wasn't too bad of an article, more about how we are using 'computing' then whether the pad is going to make pc's obsolete. That title was just to get your attention.

I have a household ban on buying any more books. When you have well over 500 books and live in a 1 bedroom condo with another person, and you buy cooking magazines, you run out of room.

I do question a journalist's integrity when I read
There are gaming consoles like Sony’s Wii
especially when they are writing a tech based article.

I actually agree with you (supporting multiple architectures would be ridiculous), but I think it's important to draw a clear line between what is "known" and what is "suspected."

Besides that hilarious flub there's also the importance it attaches to the iPad's announcement. Just by announcing this device Apple has flung us into a new era.
Plus, anyone that knows how to use an iPhone/iPod already knows how to use Windows or Mac OS.
I don't think this is true for a great many people.
Say what you will about the iPhone OS, and you can say that it's extremely limiting and closed, it lacks multitasked, it is austere, it is a shadow facsimile of what is possible on a full-fledged computer; but it is very, very intuitive. Old people do not need to consult their children or grandchildren upon turning on an iPhone.

They are (wrongly) putting this up with the announcment of the iPod/iTunes, which looking back did launch us into a new era. The 'Sony wii' thing is awesome though, missed that completely.
I think you are way over selling the lenovo hybrid.
Do you really want to fool around with the care and feeding of two OS's?
Do you really want to wait for Linux or Win7 to boot every time you transition between devices?
From what I understand, you can access the files from both sides. I doubt seriously removing the device from the shell and starting up the Linux bit will take all that long, or vice versa.
So yes, i'd far prefer that over this massively dumbed down device.
Apple says that the Processor is "1GHz Apple A4 custom-designed, high-performance, low-power system-on-a-chip."
Given the track record so far, they're not going to put Multitasking into this thing. Maybe in v2 or v3, but the OS isn't getting an update. That's simply how Apple works. Plus, even if they did, it likely would cause the device to run slower. Hell that's basically guaranteed.
As a CBR it'd be nice, but Color e-ink will have that beat most likely, though that isn't at a price point that's feasible.
Also, since when do you have to wait for a netbook to boot any more than you do this thing? Do people not leave their netbooks in sleep or whatever when they're closed? Cause you can do that you know.

aren't netbooks perfectly capable of multitasking, with similar processor speeds?
Know what else makes a nice CBR reader? Every chinese MID with WinCE, Android or Linux and they cost about $250
Except Netbooks... kinda suck.
