The Undisciplinable Cat

This is Momo.

He's mostly a good cat. However, we've allowed him to develop some bad habits. He's figured out that, when he's hungry, all he has to do is knock shit off tables and shelves and we'll eventually get fed up and feed him outside of his regularly scheduled meals. He usually goes for any cups of glasses we've left, because I think he knows liquid on the floor will get us up the quickest.

Also, he will make every attempt to steal our food when my wife and I are sitting down for a meal. This includes, but is not limited to, smacking the morsel off our forks, pretending to go away but then sneaking around the other side to steal something off the dish, and trying to drag the dish off the table.

Nothing we do'll deter him. We spray him with water, canned air, we yell and I've even, to my regret, smacked him. Nothing seems to bother him. He just gives us that, "What the fuck's your problem, dude?" look. So, aside from a backyard lobotomy with my .22, I don't know what to do. We try to ignore him, but he's nothing if not persistant.

Any advice?

Throw his ass in another room and shut the door. Every time.

If he claws the carpet under the door, put a mat down. If he yowls, ignore his ass.

Do you give him dry food?

If so you should just fill his bowl up whenever it gets emptied. Cats are generally pretty good at eating as much as they want and then stopping. Nothing wrong with keeping the bowl full.

Yes, my girlfriend does the same with our cat. Call it kitty timeout :)

Yeah, most cats will not overeat. I just keep my cat's dish semi-full all the time.

Yeah, most cats will not overeat. I just keep my cat's dish semi-full all the time.

We leave dry food out at all times. We have four cats, so wet food feeding time is thrice daily, one can divided evenly. The wet food is like a treat, I imagine. And Momo loves him some treats.

Kitty time out is actually a really good idea. I'll give that a try next time he's a douche at dinner.

Push him away and ignore him everytime he tries. Cats love the attention and the food is just an added bonus to him.

However, Kitty time out is good.

In that case, I recommend kitty time out.

Also, corporal cuddling. Its the softwest woftest cuddliest wuddliest way to discipwin your widdle kitties!

You can also do what my girlfriend does: If he's acting up near food time, instead of having to set aside a kitty-time-out room, just hold him. Curl him on your lap between your legs and hold him around his chest/stomach. Don't hurt him, but it's okay if he gets uncomfortable. Adjust him so he can't scratch you if need be. We have big cats, so we can be a little rougher and play with them while doing it.

He'll either mellow out or become so anxious he'll forget about food. The point is he shouldn't be ruining your day when he's hungry - you should break HIS concentration when he's hungry.

Empty popcan, drop 10 or so pennies inside. Ductape it closed. Shake the can to scare the shit out of him whenever he's doing something wrong. Some cats hate the sound, some don't, but if it works, yaaaayyy. Also, fyi, never give your cat table scraps. If he never learns that people food is edible he'll never want it, but it's too late for that so.

If the shakey-scary-can doesn't work, then yeah. Kitty time out. They eventually learn.

This stuff, if a spray bottle/keeping cords out of the way hasn't worked.

Get a cat grass plant, usually when they ronchronch cords they just want something to ronchronch for fun. If that doesn't work, you can try misting cords with vinegar+water, they also sell products specifically for that purpose at pet stores. Stuff like this or this.
