Ah, that must be the next one after the first ranged attack. Which has so little range that, by the time I'm close enough to use it, the enemy just walks over to me anyways. Spells and bows have about the same problem.

Psst. The 2AC ranged attack hits everything in a line between you and your target.
GR gives you access to more jobs. Once you get to GR7, you gain access to increased-level versions of quests you've already done, which will have enemies harder than you'll find anywhere in single player.
Also all the really high-end equipment requires high guild rank.
It's really a shame that this game requires a lot of grinding before you get to the GR 7 and 8 quests, when you'll actually start encountering *gasp* difficulty.
So what does gaining GR actually do for you? Does it just unlock more jobs you can do?
I did Big Red like 4 times to get up to GR4 last night. But I'm getting 0 EXP from it so it felt like a waste of time.
Are you poisoning Big Red to make him easier? If you beat the game first and go back to farm Big Red, you can finish that quest between 3-5 minutes going directly to him, and he's worth 650~xp a kill alone, plus you S Rank the quest for 5600 points. It's the fastest quest to do pre Rank 8, bar none, and perfectly soloable.

Haven't beat the game yet. I just got to Baccea or whatever.
And yeah it seems incredibly easy. Takes two minutes or so to do it if you run there. I need to make my axe water elemental so I can solo it. I'm level 30 now.

The Axe one works the same way for 1AC.
Correction: It hits everything in a line. It will actually reach beyond your target if the enemies are still in line with the attack. I haven't experimented too much to see just how long the attack is but it is at least as long as your ability to target.
Also GR is pretty darned important. As it's been stated you only gain access to the other quests if you increase your GR rank, you only gain access to the better weapons if you increase your GR rank, and you can only upgrade your Georama to a certain point unless you increase your GR rank. The bulk of this game is focused on the online element and questing.
I still think the SP is better for gaining money though, can anyone estimate how much you can get frmo a Boot Camp II run? I need to start farming some serious cash so fund my georama, and get my lumberjack equipment. (Got the chest piece!)

Oh, that's true. It's just maddeningly inconsistent for me whether it'll pierce. I *think* it'll only do it if your initial target is very close or something like that.

Depends largely on how much shit you can kill in 30 minutes. I can get to 50 in about 14:30 (as a pathetic white mage) and I make a little over 10k per run.
I'd say SP is probably better for money just because you can really tear through enemies quickly with your group, though the money seems like it would get much worse as you approach level 50. Haven't tried it myself, just hit 47.
Delph if you're available we should do something. I've done boot camp II a disgusting amount of times.
Also *sigh* 1.8 million GR, going to need to keep grinding Big Red II tonight to get the remaining 350,000 I need. Hopefully THIS TIME I won't be distracted by the domestic troubles of random people who don't know how to adjust the inbound sensitivity of their headset. *cough*

I'm looking forward to finally playing the multiplayer casually once I hit 50. This grinding is driving me insane. I just can't do it anymore after this. Only two more levels to go.

I'm only GR7. I've been focusing more on reincarnating than on getting GR. Also the main way I see to get GR is still Big Red I, if I'm solo, which is spectacularly unappealing, so I'm sort of using the 6k I get each boot camp II to make the eventual, necessary, but terrible task of getting GR8 less horrible. I need about 490k to hit 8, yet.

Last night, I did Memorial Servant II in a pug, and we fought a really tough Wind Dragon boss instead of the usual Ahwahnee. The guy leading said you do the flower order as scarlet, white then red to summon it.
Definitely requires a healer on their toes and a smart tank who knows when to actually defend and isn't all just "OLOLOL, I r tank w/heavy armor!!!!1one1!. U hela me and I DPS while tanking!!!!!" Scored 18K GP on that run, which still S ranked it, and the fight alone was entertaining if only for the actual difficulty present in it.

Yeah. I think I'll find doing BR II more fun, though, because I'll actually get to do my job. So far as a healer I mostly feel pretty useless because I'm rarely, if ever, necessary.

Healer isn't absolutely necessary (We proved that last night) but DEAR GOD is it nice to have. When you get hit by Big Red with a 603 damage Welter strike and get pretty much instantly pasted having someone use Raise II and bring you back up with almost full health is pretty darned nice.
Also AoE heals are Soooooooooo nice.

Oh yeah, you can't take him down quickly. It seems you actually NEED to party in GR8+ quests. If you try and solo him, or even regular golems or trolls, they drop you. I can't even punch a hole in those bastards by myself.
Anyway, I'm going to get myself to 49 today and then tomorrow I'll make the last push to 50. The last level shouldn't feel quite so bad.

Everyone is playing this at a breakneck pace. By the time you hit GR8, they'll all probably be GR10 or 11 or something. :P
I'm not going to be all grindy once I reincarnate, though, so you'll probably easily catch up to me. I'm just going to play multiplayer casually once I reincarnate to a better tank (1H Sword/Shield isn't cutting it for me).

You can actually take down Big Red II pretty quick. I've done a 2H Sword x2 + Elemental x2 group against him where he was maybe able to attack four times between the constant K.O. headshots and the constant falling on his kness from melee damage. It was pretty damn funny.
I've also had longer Big Red II's with Spear tanks that never took triple digit damage and debuffed the shit out of the boss.
Try soloing as a bow user. I feel like my damage is totally subpar for my skill set. At least in a healer or tank role, I'd expect my damage to be lower than the dudes running around with 2H or elemental mages. Bows are just totally lackluster.

Make sure you're getting all the passives that affect your particular weapon, and using the appropriate skills (both element and damage type).
Also to do really high damage as a bow, your "increases crit chance on next attack" skill applies to entire combos.
Anyways, I'm going to go have lunch with a friend, I'll be back on, a-grinding toward reincarnation, in an hour or so.
What quests are you needing to s-rank to get queen's armor pieces, Delph? I have to say that does look pretty sweet, I might want to craft a set for myself.

I keep running into bow users outdamaging/equaling 2h users online so I don't know what happed wrong with your experience.
Gear for Dex > Str > Int. Use Full Brace constantly. Make Bullseye the first hit in any combo. Cast Inspire on yourself (Hate is good too). Grab all the Dex and Str passives. And make sure to keep your equipment upgraded. And aim for the head.

Right now I need Toxic Greaver Pelts, Aged Dragon Skulls, and a host of other random stuff. I don't need any particular quest to be S-Ranked just need to hit GR9. The ingredients might pose a little problem though but i'm more concerned about hitting GR9.
Once I do that then I'l start hunting down the ingredients.

Yeah, I definitely don't have the proper "spec" or gear on then. I have a majority of the passives, but I can't take the +DEX from the 1H swords because I won't have enough points before I hit 50. It won't really matter since I'll switch up to 2H skills for the respec.
The truth about "Full Brace" is the damage only applies to the first hit in the combo. However, it does apply to all targets in an AoE attack, like +Judgment, +Hellfire, or Pierce. I've tailored most combos for the first hit to be the best for Full Brace to be fully effective. Like in my fire combo, the first hit is Fire Bolt (2AC, 4MP), then Fire Hit, then the rest of the combo.
Is it worth it at all of Elemental focused mages to bother using combos with staffs? It seems the big spells use up enough ACs to not worry about it.
Later in the game not so much. Doing elemtal staff combos on Big Red 1 with a staff enchanted +1 to an element (so you can get +10 and a bonus hit at the end of your combo) can basically 2shot the guy with burst damage.
But yeah, using AC for seeker buffs and casting is normally better.
Alright, back to grinding toward reincarnation. I'm so far behind in GR it's not even funny, but grinding GR solo makes me want to die inside very badly.
If anyone's up for farming Big Red until we both claw our eyes out, I'll be operating out of my town.
So, I caved and bought it, seems pretty good, but question:
Can I force my party members to use only certain skills? As in, use only skills set up in the whatever-it's-called line? Or do they just pick whatever, often going with the most basic attack despite having better options?
I know you can change their tactics, but that's not really what I'm looking for.
Usually there isn't a better option than the basic attack.
They will select, basically randomly, out of the skills you put on their bars. If on go all-out, they'll pick costly skills preferentially, and if on conserve they'll avoid expending action chips or MP.
Don't worry, though. You could very likely solo the single player without much effort.

They will only use things in their bar. If you press R3 you will have them temporarily go "All Out" and depending on the skills available they will either go heal crazy or initiate the biggest combo they can with the AC chips they have available.
Keep in mind you have to press R3 for each member you want to go all out and it will go in order on the list.

Haven't beat the game yet. I just got to Baccea or whatever.
And yeah it seems incredibly easy. Takes two minutes or so to do it if you run there. I need to make my axe water elemental so I can solo it. I'm level 30 now.

I'd say SP is probably better for money just because you can really tear through enemies quickly with your group, though the money seems like it would get much worse as you approach level 50. Haven't tried it myself, just hit 47.
Delph if you're available we should do something. I've done boot camp II a disgusting amount of times.
Also Kasey, Lisa, and Daphne are the bestest triad team ever! WOO!

Kainy what GR are you up to now?

I'm only GR7. I've been focusing more on reincarnating than on getting GR. Also the main way I see to get GR is still Big Red I, if I'm solo, which is spectacularly unappealing, so I'm sort of using the 6k I get each boot camp II to make the eventual, necessary, but terrible task of getting GR8 less horrible. I need about 490k to hit 8, yet.
Vagrant and I spent an entire day grinding Big Red to get from GR7 to GR8. I was foaming at the mouth and my fingers were bleeding by the end of it.
Have fun!
Oh, and then you think you're done with that asshole troll, but it seems the best way to get to GR9 is to grind Big Red II. Fffffffffffffffffffffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-
Last night, I did Memorial Servant II in a pug, and we fought a really tough Wind Dragon boss instead of the usual Ahwahnee.

I think it's between 24k and 26k for an S rank.

In any case I'm soloing out of my town. One more georama level and I should be able to 50/50/50 mages. I already have materials that cost over 100 grand o_o
Two words:
Queen's Mail.
Once I get that I'll probably be slowing down quite a bit.

I've also had longer Big Red II's with Spear tanks that never took triple digit damage and debuffed the shit out of the boss.

Sonnuvabitch!

If anyone's up for farming Big Red until we both claw our eyes out, I'll be operating out of my town.
Can I force my party members to use only certain skills? As in, use only skills set up in the whatever-it's-called line? Or do they just pick whatever, often going with the most basic attack despite having better options?
I know you can change their tactics, but that's not really what I'm looking for.
They will select, basically randomly, out of the skills you put on their bars. If on go all-out, they'll pick costly skills preferentially, and if on conserve they'll avoid expending action chips or MP.
Don't worry, though. You could very likely solo the single player without much effort.
Say, there's an idea to make SP more fun...
