EDIT: Didn't see the other post directly above. Thanks.
I knew about forcing combos, which is nice. I think the combo timing on the player controlled character is a bit wonky, but maybe I just need to get used to it.
Yeah, any of the 3 bars. The AI is still bad and will on occasion make a stupid decision. Like casting fire on mobs strong to fire, or using AoE skills on single target enemies.
They also won't be much use for support. Status curing (Cure, Revive) or afflicting (Poison, Silence) skills never get used. They also never buff automatically, so you have to do it for them. That's not such a big deal if you have a skilled Divine user with the +group buffs. At least those are useable outside of combat.
AI's generally pretty smart about when to heal, at least.
Status effect cures will get used, though generally only the specific status effect spells (not refresh) and even then I've only seen it for the crowd control ones (KO, paralyze, sleep). The AI doesn't care one bit that you're poisoned. Then again, with how little damage poison does, neither should you, unless you're crazy and don't have one character in your party solely for divine magic.
Usually there isn't a better option than the basic attack.
They will select, basically randomly, out of the skills you put on their bars. If on go all-out, they'll pick costly skills preferentially, and if on conserve they'll avoid expending action chips or MP.
Don't worry, though. You could very likely solo the single player without much effort.
Say, there's an idea to make SP more fun...
At one point, I had accidentally set Leonard to go all out. I was constantly irritated that he never had any ACs to use the white power ranger. I finally saw the setting the other night and cried a little bit. I really wish they had taken some extra time to improve the AI on the casters. It is really irritating at times.
That commercial is so much a more accurate depiction of how the game plays than any other advertisement for the game that I've ever seen, that I suggest it be added to the OP in turbo-lime.
That's lime...
WITH A MOTHERFUCKING DASH OF TURBO
I am really bad at getting back to grinding. This time for reals!
Hey Kainy want to grind while helping me kill dragons and such? I can't do any of these GR6 quests on my own. They either take too long or the bosses just constantly knock me down.
My Story-playing to play catch up is going fairly well. I hit level 30 today, but I'm only GR3. (About one more quest off of 4)
But goddamnit, the maps are really starting to grate on me, even though I like that they're big maps. I'll spoiler this just in case we get some new buyers or whatnot.
Mid-Late game:
Flandar Trail was pretty cool the first time. I was miffed at the narrow passageways, but I figured, eh, it wouldn't be so bad, and there's even side caves for some variety. And then I find out, hey, all those side caves are one-way. And there's a quest specifically built around going from one end of the map to another, and following those one-ways back all the way down. Of course, I figured this out after going to the closest location and second closest location. I am sick of Flandar Trail.
Frass Chasm. Seriously? Fucking after Baccea, we're playing the ski lift game? And there's pockets of about a dozen monsters at a time that are so close to the lifts that you can't run away? I was just trying to get through there because a fourth of the way through, I was just sick of it. Fucking Greavers, Umbra Flowers, Vespids, Scorpions, Troll Kings and Treants, whatever. I was tired of fighting them over and over again, so I was just running. And I run into an area with TWO Greavers and four Vespids. I go "Fuck this," head through, accidentally getting spotted by one of the Greavers and all of the Vespids along the way, and promptly run into about Six Umbra Flowers, MORE Vespids, and a handful of Scropions. Where the team died because everyfucking thing hit us along the way.
I know I've got a few more areas still, and they better not be as bad. Nothing else in the game bothers me aside from that. So, of course it's still fun as hell, but I'm not going back to either of those places unless I have to.

Hrm...yeah you're in for some "fun".
Personally I loved Frass chasm, the whole feel of the place was really cool and the large amount of monsters meant large amounts of exp and gold with little downtime between battles.
But....yeah sorry man it doesn't get better, you're REALLY going to hate what's coming up if you didn't like Frass.

Ffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff-
Oh well. If I take the time and fight everything (except the big enemies. Just a waste of time right now.) it won't be so bad, since the only reason I died was trying to run past everything.
Sigh.
I actually don't even hate the part about Frass, it's just needlessly complicated looking, and I'd like to be able to use them regardless of battle, like the elevators, even though I understand why I can't.
I'm about 9,000 EXP away from level 50 and my reincarnation. If anyone wants to do some quests online so I can give my new guy a try in a little bit, that would be cool.

At level 28 or so, my big red runs consist of me running to the boss and then watching a longsword guy practically one shot big red with a combo for 2000+. It makes me feel so inferior. Does my damage get way higher than it is now or should I just plan on going longsword or something? I also hate the fact that my spells have a long cast time and he is able to knock me down. It seems like melee users don't really have that issue.
You can get knocked down by anything. I was level 38 trying to do Boot Camp 1 once for S Rank, and I got crit by a kibble for 1 damage, and knocked down. I think with some good DEF, you may block more often, which means no knockdown, but I'm not sure if your DEF will work while you're casting.
As a caster, you may not have access to many combos, but you do more damage per AC used than a 2H user will. The only benefit to being melee/bow and throwing out long combos is to offload a large chunk of damage all at once, and stagger or knockdown big mobs.
I'm in a Geowhatchamacallit, the little quest hub. There's a basic shop there, and some plants to pick at. Joy.
However, there's also a shop with a hammer-like icon who won't deal with me on account of my lacking membership. What's the deal? Will I unlock it via singleplayer, or do I need to do something specific in multi/geo mode?

Pretty much. Staff mages have the highest damage rate in the game when not dealing with resistant mobs (and even then it's still high) and the best aoe in the game. In return they have zero burst damage and require a tank more than any other class.

That's the binding station, where you get to craft new gear. You'll unlock that in the SP once you get to Albana.

At GR9 you can fight monsters that give ~550+ exp a kill (Ring Leader II). :P

I was killing stuff in Knave 2 and getting like 550 or 850 depending on which mob it was.
Was sooo nice.
On RL II you can go south and run a nice loop of monster death. I should be able to grind some levels easily tomorrow....today.
