Hello, Internet people. I seek your advice on eating both healthily and cheaply.
I have a breakfast of (store brand) cheerios with almond milk and honey, which I'm pretty sure counts as healthy.
For lunch I have a small sub with whole wheat rolls and deli meat, but I need a spread for it. Mayonnaise is awfully bland (and not particularly healthy), and mustard tastes bad to me on sandwiches that are not hamburgers. I need suggestions for good spreads. And it doesn't necessarily need to be a spread; just something to add flavor to the meal.
As for supper, I'm hopelessly inept. I do know how to cook, but I don't know what to cook. All I can think of are really unhealthy things.
I can't suggest spreads for your sub, but for dinner wholewheat pasta isn't a horrible idea, possibly with a chicken or beef or vegetable stock cube for a little flavour.

Have you tried brown or spicy mustard? Maybe dijon mustard?

I'm a fan of electric indoor grills for cooking. I can't really see how you can go wrong with cooking dinner unless you're eating half a pound of fried bacon with some lays potato chips.
A meat if you like your meat, chicken is usually good and healthy, but get a leaner cut of beef or pork if you're concerned. Throw in some vegetables and viola, food. If you feel the need to use sauce, find something, go easy on the oil and use peanut or olive oil to cook with if you need some oil.

I had thought of making chicken wraps. Are flour tortillas reasonably healthy?
Sure, whole wheat ones are pretty good for you. Chicken wraps are a great idea, and filling.
Generally you're not going to get fat if you portion your meals right, even if it seems unhealthy. As always, exercise if you want to be healthy -- diet alone isn't the greatest measure of health.

I'm already fat (though not cripplingly so--I can walk a few miles comfortably). I find that when I eat healthier, it's much easier to break the procrastination that keeps me from going out for a walk or doing exercises. And it also makes it easier for me to ignore the temptation to eat poorly.
I've only been doing the lunch and breakfast things for about a week. :rotate:
Don't forget your veg. A serving of veg with each meal and a piece of fruit or two a day isn't a bad place to start. You can go frozen or canned if you want to keep it cheap, but watch out for added salt/sugar.
If you live in the southwest where avocado is always available, I often mash it up as a mayo substitute. While still fatty it has good fat. Though if you're trying to cut calories it isn't the best of ideas.
As far as spreads go I usually go one of two ways myself. Either I use a spicy brown mustard or a bit of oil and red wine vinegar and if I'm feeling like a bit of spice I throw in a bit of giardinara.
I eat gala apples regularly, so fruit is covered. I put freshly chopped onions on the sandwich, and I'm sure I'll do the same with the wrap. I'll browse around the produce section when I go shopping to see if I can find something to supplement the vegetables.
What kind of cheeses go good with chicken and ham? I've thought about trying out pepperjack.

Southeast, which as you can imagine makes eating healthy difficult.

I like oil and vinegar on sandwiches. I'll give that a shot.
Pasta with tinned tomatoes, onion and basil (fry those up until it's less juicy). Maybe some cheese if you feel the not irrational desire for flavour, fats and protein.
That's what, 30p a meal? Pretty good. It goes without saying you should be buying cheap unbranded products (although I am a secret fan of nice pasta).
I made an avocado salad last night, it was pretty delicious and on the healthy side.
2 Avocados, diced
1 small sweet onion, diced
2 roma tomatoes, diced
1 lb of cooked shrimp
the juice of 2 limes
Mix all of that together and chill.
You can eat it as is, mixed with a little brown rice, stuffed into a whole wheat pita for a sammich, in a lettuce wrap ... pretty much anything you want.

That sounds great, just keep in mind it's about 1000 calories before any rice or pita.
As for mayo it's fine in moderation, just keep in mind the regular stuff is 70%+ oil. Its hard to tell the difference between full fat and light stuff though.

1000 calories for the whole bowl maybe, that's enough for 4 servings, 1 serving is about 322 calories.

Fruit is the candy of nature. It has very little nutritional value. Whenever you hear ads telling you to "Eat your fruits and veggies!" they really just mean veggies.
For my wrap I went with red bell peppers, onions, turkey, and Swiss cheese on a whole wheat flour tortilla. I put too much stuff on it and ended up with a fat middle, but it was still good.
Pesto is a delicious spread. Basic basil pesto is a good stand by but there's recipes for all sorts including (one of my faves) cilantro, sun dried tomato, and more.
hummus is freakin delicious spread. so is pesto. I like tzaziki too but it can be a bit fatty.
my fav salad to make is:
1can black beans (drained and rinsed)
1can corn
1container grape tomatoes (chopped in half is better than whole)
1 sweet pepper, chopped smallish (no bigger than the tomatoes)
some jicama if you can find it
1 avocado (also cut smallish)
1-2 tbsp lime juice
1-2 tsp olive oil
1/2-1 tsp cumin
chopped cilantro
You can toss in whatever other veggies you like. The recipe originally calls for mango but I hate chopping up mango and I find it's too sweet in the salad. I often add in cucumber too because it's yummylicious. Make a big batch of that and then you have a healthy side salad for supper, or filling for your pita's etc. (with a protein if you like, I find a few lemony shrimp are really good with this)
For spreads on subs, I like fat free or lite miracle whip. It's much more healthy and tastes better than mayo.
In the mustard category in addition to the regular yellow and spicy brown mustard you can check out honey mustard. Just make sure you check out the nutrition label in the store. There are full fat and fat free versions of that as well. It's not quite as healthy as regular mustard though so you may want to use a bit less.

shit be strong
I recently started eating whole wheat pasta.
It's got some flavor.
So much so that I no longer add any cheese on pasta.
It's a whole new world of flavor.

If you get some seasoned lunch meats that can take the sting out of a dry sandwich a little bit... but those aren't cheap.
Failing that, pickles + ground pepper does wonders on a turkey sub in my opinion.
A an aside, if you don't like whole wheat pasta, spinach pasta is awesome if you can get past the color.
we also talk about other random shit and clown upon each other

they can be pretty bad for you if they're cream cheese based, so as with anything, pay attention to what you're buying
It's also super cheap to make.
