So. I've had this game for a while but hadn't got around to playing it till recently. Holy shit. I honestly think that walking around the mansion with low sanity is the scariest thing I've done next to reading an actual Lovecraft story.
I do think though, that the spell which restores sanity makes things a little too easy. The chapter where I got the alignment rune to cast that was the scariest one because I spent most of it bat-shit fucking insane. I was walking on the fucking ceiling. It was possibly more scary after I got the rune and restored my sanity because I realized that some of the stuff that I thought had happened was just me being insane.
Perhaps having sanity slowly recover, or give a bit more for finishing off monsters. Something that forces the player to be careful about his sanity and to live with it for at least a little while if he's not.
I just finished the chapter with the architect. Pillar of flesh. If I wasn't scared shitless I'd make a joke about that.
I wanted to like this game but I found the gameplay pretty boring and IIRC (its been a couple years since I played it) I had a hell of a hard time keeping my sanity high. I think I stopped playing when you start playing as the ben franklin looking guy.
I loved this game, but its a bit dated now (far from unplayable thought) and the fact that the sequal only exists as an insanity effect IRL saddens me.

That's unfortunate because that's the level where I got the rune to restore sanity :P. I think when you get it depends on which artifact you choose in the first chapter.

SK has announced more games will be coming in the series. We just have to wait for them to finish the Too Human trilogy first. :x

the game that the first one started life on the PSone. They have to make 3 of those. Thats like 30 years!

Is Too Human human enough to be a human sacrifice? 'Cause that'd finish it pretty quick. And possibly fuel the rift in reality through which the soul-scouring horrors from beyond the stars will pour.

Like planned game trilogies ever work out.
shutup you, shenmue 3 is on the way!!!
It better be. Sega has to do something right to make up for all the trash we've endured.

Hooray! I just got this game last week, and have been playing it. My girlfriend really likes it because it's got a compelling story. So she hunts out secrets in the mansion, and I fight all the monsters in character(s). It is a very creepy game, but also really, really clever. I enjoy it a lot.
I think the sanity meter is awesome. I never encountered something quite like that in a game before, and it has me mesmorized.
It's such an intense game, and I'm playing Dragon Quest VIII right now as well. The kiddy humor in that game is a breath of fresh air after a few hours battling through Eternal Darkness.
[spoiler:8ba2f78334]Btw, while fighting as the Roivas guy, did anyone else think that damn spider was never going to die? It took me like 25 minutes to beat the fucker with the sword. (I ran out of bullets early on.)[/spoiler:8ba2f78334]

It has a spell that puts a shield on it, significantly decreasing the damage you deal until it wears off.
Enchant Item is your friend though. You cast the opposing alignment to it on a firearm and its days are numbered.

Definitely get back to it, you're very close the end.
This game has some of the best cutscenes of its generation, which is saying a lot since so many of them are just two character models standing around talking. Despite the age of the models the expressiveness of the model faces holds up today if you ask me.

Agreed. I last played this game 3 years ago and there's nary been a game quite like it.
It's also the only game I've ever played again right after finishing it for the first time.
Actually, I remember firing this game up after my Red Sox lost game 7 of the ALCS a few years back b/c I needed to get the frustration out by destroying some demons as the firefighter.
Goddamn I loved that game.

Man, I guess it's just me, but the first thing I complained about (aside from walking so slowly) is that the characters in cutscenes had no facial expressions.
Oh man, this game gets from me.
I rented it when it first came out (wow 5 years ago!), and back then my mom wasn't too keen on violent video games, nor games featuring "occult" stuff. So I was playing it late at night, with the sound low so I was leaning in to the TV, and afraid of getting caught any second. That, along with the sanity meter, made for one of the best gaming experiences of my life.
Scary as a barrell full of hungry clowns.
I would piss myself if we ever got a new one ^_^

life's a game that you're bound to lose / like using a hammer to pound in screws
fuck up once and you break your thumb / if you're happy at all then you're god damn dumb
that's right we're on a fucked up cruise / God is dead but at least we have booze
bad things happen, no one knows why / the sun burns out and everyone dies
Dude, playing through three times was awesome but the secret ending you get is hella lame.
Oh god yes. I mean, yeah it's nice closure but you really wanted something better for going through 3 damn times. I actually didn't go through all 3 times for the ending though. I did it for the autopsies. I also loved going through for that one church guy. Paul Luther. His chapter endings were masterpieces and many game developers could learn a thing or two from them.
I do think though, that the spell which restores sanity makes things a little too easy.
I'm in the same boat.
I was playing this a few months back, and when I got the spells to restore life and sanity, I stopped playing. I pictured myself compulsively stopping after each fight to walk around the room in a circle a few times to regen enough mana to top off all my tanks.

Pillar of Flesh are you serious?
I hope I find this game cheap one day.
eek.

And I thought I was the only one.
So this is what it feels like when doves cry...

That really doesn't bother me, but if it's true I'm almost relieved.

This thread is just asking for it.
On the subject of Eternal Darkness: This was one of my favorite Gamecube games so I made my friend buy it when he got a Wii and he hates it
Feed him to Cthulhu. It's your only choice.

And you claim to use the internet. Get off my porch.
On topic: I've played the game once. I stopped at the aforementioned tub. Jesus.

Yes, which tires you out, forcing you to rest from time to time. Walking a bit quicker would be great.
Now Alex wandering all alone through that dark mansion, where everything is just a tiny bit wrong was scary.
