However, the original art director grew so disenchanted that all her prior work was being discarded that she eventually quit the project, left Gearbox, and got out of the game industry altogether.
Great GameSpot write up on GearBox's GDC presentation about the 11th hour overhaul of Borderlands art direction.
They also used shortcuts to produce the results they wanted, such as creating a fiction about a stationary moon to create a single, fixed light source in the sky that yielded dramatic shadows.
What? I don't remember anything remotely like that being mentioned in the game.
Well the game didn't have collectibles/books anywhere that you could use to expand your knowledge of the World. I'm sure much of the fiction is at their offices but was never mentioned in the game.
I actually considered getting the strategy guide because the early word was that it was going to have a lot of great stuff like backstory on the various corporations and tons of art.
Then I looked at it, and it was not that. So I didn't.
True story.
EDIT: Quoted wrong post, although I also think it's a shame the old director left. Can't blame her, I'd probably exit stage left myself. I'm happy (as hell) the art took the direction it did.

I can understand the frustration but also, honestly, that's kind of the risk you run with any sort of collaborative process. I mean, in my previous job, there was a decent chance that I could pour a week's worth of work into a project, only to have my boss say "nope, we're going to do it this way instead, except that I like how you worded paragraph 2 on page 3, we'll keep that." And that's just counting my solo work, not the projects where I'd have to hammer something out with my colleagues before it got to the boss.
I'm not saying it's fun, but that's kinda how it works sometimes.

I feel kind of bad for the art director who ended up quitting because all her work got dumped in favour of the new style, and left the game industry

Not really, the original art sucked. I don't mean it was of poor quality I mean it was bland and unimaginative.
So I feel like I'm being forced to buy the new expansion because the only guns available in stores or my level 50 character are level 48 and 54. Rather cruel.
Just a balance question for those that know. When you're level 61 and completely done with the missions what level are the enemies? 60 to 61?
I'm just hoping that it doesn't continue the trend of enemies being one level higher than you when you're maxed.
I was thinking that of all things is part of the reason the level cap is 61 and not 60.
So what's the fastest way to level up at my current level (24)? As I've mentioned before, I'm trying to grind up so I can wade through the Armory DLC. Someone who wasn't a ten year old who kept knifing people last night said the best way was to join a 2nd playthrough, where the experience is much more plentiful. If someone meets that requirement, could we perhaps team up later tonight?
Or even better, anyone interested in a co-op run of the Armory? One way or another I have to play through it.
Prof. if you're still looking Thursday evening (~10pm) I can help you then. Wish I could help you now but I am busy. I can make the game, you join, and I kill level 60 stuff and you gain exp like crazy.

Nah once you hit 61 most enemies are either 56-58. Only one that I've seen thats higher than you is crawermax.

Yeah EST. Shoot me a PM about that time (I have an exam till 10, but I'll be done beforehand I'm sure) just in case I get caught in an Internet infinite loop.
Played this on my roommates X360 for a bit and really liked it. So I picked it up for PC along with all of the DLCs. Lvl 5 woot, going to give it more playtime tomorrow evening.

For the love of god make sure you do the PC tweaks mentioned in the OP. There is actually a configurator out there to do it for you.
Got Crawmerax to about 30% health, and then one of his buddies headbutt me off the side. How the flying fuck do you guys solo this guy? I have a 130x4 SMG that does some decent damage to him but I can't seem to find a good tactic.
My friend found out that his combat rifles are entirely useless. He shot at him for a good 20-30 seconds and did almost no damage to him. He's got a rifle with 360 dmg and like 110 bullets. It's weird.
I have yet to successfully solo him, although I came sooooooooooooooooo close. Stupid Craw Maggots. If they had been on the Gearbox survey I would have found a way to list them as my least favorite, second least favorite, and third least favorite bad guys. (Since they weren't listed I think it was something like Defilers, Drifters, and Rakks, although it's really just the first two as I don't mind Rakks that much.)
Anyone know how to trigger the gondola repair quest in Knoxx? It came right up when I needed it playing XBox. Now on PC I've already killed Knoxx once and I can't seem to get it to trigger. If I go to the place where the piece is will it be there even if I haven't gotten the quest to find it already? (Sadly the good folks over at the Borderlands Wiki have not yet added any quest info for the Knoxx DLC.)
I think to trigger the repair quest you have to finish the revenge quests for Athena.
re: Crawmerax- there is a spot on the left side of the map where neither he nor the maggots can usually see you. notice the "usually". if they are somewhat close, they will attack as normal. for your friend with the combat rifle, was he aming at the bright purple spots? everywhere else will be 0's.

I've solo'd him around 30 times and I generally follow this formula:
If you aren't a Siren I don't think there is a reliable way to solo old Craw. The glitch on the left side of the map works for a bit, but then there is no way to shoot his back once you've hit all his other crit spots.
Hmmm. I might try that. So if you go from pillar to pillar it works? So does that skill in the right most tree at the very top right worth it? I heard it was bugged once upon a time and I'm not sure how long it actually lasts when you phase.

Yeah, that skill works now. The thing is that it usually isn't necessary because if you hide behind the pillars correctly, then you can stay there without anyone attacking you until your phasewalk comes back. Which in turn allows you to pop out and start shooting crawmerax without any fear of death. Its actually really simple as a Siren once you get the hang of it.
I just hit Level 50 on my Siren in Playthrough 2, and aside from the Crimson Lance dudes in Old Haven, there really haven't been too many challenges that my Hellfire SMG and Corrosive Equalizer Revolver haven't been able to take down with ease.
I tried editing the .ini files to make the game think that I'm playing with 1.5 or 2 people, but it doesn't seem to be working.

I was the same way. I had a Hellfire that would just tear through everything. Plus phasewalking is the equivalent of the game's "easy button". The game was so easy, until I started up Secret Armory of General Knoxx. Just wait till you hit the enemies in the Armory expansion. Its a pretty rude awakening and is a welcome challenge. I hadn't died since level 10 or so, then I died 2-3 times within the first 30 minutes of playing the Knoxx expansion.
I'm going to nab the expansion as soon as my exams are over next week. I've heard that elsewhere too that Knoxx can be a rude awakening to anyone stepping into it at level 50, so I'm looking forward to it.
Plus, I'll get to hear the Ice Cream Song and see Moxxi's giant ... hat, which I've heard is worth the price of admission alone.
Wooo! Solo'ed Crawmerax. That's a tense fight. I almost lost it twice when I phase walked near a pillar and got head butted out by a craw maggot. But yeah being able to phase walk back and forth between the two pillars is the only way to do it.

Nice! I finally killed that goosing crawdad solo last night too! Finding a sweet lvl 61 shock SMG in the vending machine on the way there made a lot of difference. Suck it, Craw Maggots!
What did he drop? A slightly better no-scope Pestilent Defiler, two orange repeaters w/ sub-5 ROF, a nice purple SMG that's just a little worse than about 5 others I have, a purple x3 corrosive combat rifle w/ decent stats that doesn't seem to do as much damage as it ought to, and a whole lot of nothing.
And that's with a +2 Rare Item Find mod on.

I usually start the fight off with a SMG ammo regen mod but then switch to my +2 Rare Items mod when he has only one crit spot left. Through 30+ Craw kills, I will sometimes forget to put the +2 Rare Items mod on. The difference between the drops with and without the rare items mod is not even noticeable. I always get around the same number of oranges and they are usually the same quality. What's worse is that I found my second pearl the other day when I didn't have the rare items mod equipped.
Basically, I'm not sure the +2 Rare Item Find mod works on Crawmerax. I think the Rare Item mod increases the chance that an enemy will drop an extra item/weapon. Either Crawmerax has a set number of items he drops or he drops so many that an extra one or two items is negated/negligible that its not even worth it.
Edit: Killing him, though, has upgraded nearly all of my weapons because eventually you will find something better than what you have. I've gotten a maxed out Hellfire and Defiler, and nearly maxed out Pestilent Crux, and some amazing purple SMGs from his drops. Whatever the next DLC is, I will be ready for it, because my gear is awesome.

I've gotten it to work with a soldier a couple times but I've never gotten it to work consistently. Its really finicky. Worst part is that once you finally get it to work, its really hard to get a sight on Crawmerax's back crit spot.
Going back to this game with a friend after a while and it is both still quite fun and obviously needs to be improved upon.
We went about an hour and a half without finding anything in particular interesting, after opening like a dozen Gun Chests. I just wish the gear curve was a bit better.

Done, thanks for pointing out this configurator. I had already planned to do it all by hand but why bother when this fine app will do it for me.
I was able to level up to 29 last night, so hopefully it won't be much longer that I can play through the Armory DLC without dying every 5 seconds.
But even so, I'd like to do a party run just so I can get the gist of the main story.

I think I found your problem. Sirens make a joke out just about of everything.
I just love meleeing guys for 800% damage out of Phasewalk, though. I'm not sure I'll ever be able to give that up.
You can do it from that spot but it is tricky. You've got to be on the ledge lower than the main "floor" and then wedge yourself into the corner.
Its not as easy as that youtube douche makes it look however, as he's using modded guns. Its way easier to just go as a Siren and use the pillars.
