Visiting New York

If there's one Internet forum I trust to largely enjoy much of the same things I do it's PA.

I just found out yesterday, a friend of the family's happened to have an apartment vacant in NYC and let us stay so now I'm going with mother, since it lined up that she's between contracts. But it's pretty short-notice (probably heading out tomorrow), so I haven't really had time to plan and I'm woefully ignorant of anything that is NYC (or mostly any area that's not Toronto).

Without any more yip-yap, I need some recommendations on what to do, where to go, and what to see. Some tourist traps we'll obviously go to, even so it'd be nice to be advised on which ones are a must among what I'm sure are an innumerable quantity. Suggestions on the less well known places from locals are even more important though.

Music - I like a lot of things, any indie/jazz venue suggestions would be great. But I'm a pretty standard breed of nerd, so a relaxed atmosphere is preferred (i.e. avoid dancing like the plague).
Restaurants - I'm pretty picky with food, but I can't really describe what towards and why other than that I don't enjoy non-lean meat (hate fat, and veins, and cartilage). Oh, and onions (and evil vegetable if ever there was one).
Shopping - The least important thing really, especially not-interested in clothes. And I'm not really sure what I'd like to see, but nevertheless, if there's some place that's particular awesome I need to check out then tell me.

Ugh, I just realised the legal drinking age is 21 for drinking in USA (I think? I'm 20). So nothing where I need be 21 to get in. Thanks for recommendations in advance, I'll be staying there for a week.

Where is the apartment and how far are you willing to travel?

Also, yes the drinking age is 21.

In Manhattan, I doubt we'll be leaving it.
